The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has said plans are at advanced stages to generate constant electricity for residents of the state in 2018.

He noted that the state government had already devised strategies to short-circuit power generation, transmission and distribution to ensure there was “24/7 power supply to residents.”

Ambode spoke at a recent interactive session with members of the business community and informal sector, a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Habib Haruna, said on Sunday.

“Presently, we have less than 1,000MW in Lagos and the fundamental issues remain with generation, transmission and distribution. Transmission is still owned primarily by the Federal Government. But in Lagos State, we have become creative and we have done Independent Power Project through which we were able to generate 47.5MW which was distributed short-circuiting transmission.

“So, if it works, does it look like a template we can now use to get power freedom or what we call power security? If we say we are the fifth largest economy in Africa and we are not in control of how power is generated in an economy that wants to move from fifth to third, then something is wrong.

“So, what we are saying is, let’s find a way to short-circuit them within the ambit of the law,” the governor was quoted as saying.

Ambode noted that the state government was also talking with electricity distribution companies operating in the state to supply 24/7 power to residents at a higher tariff, subject to agreement of all stakeholders, while government would be the guarantor of the people.

I'm sure people would pay more to have more power let's see. If he solves distribution issue I guess it's possible.

The Governor is under pressure for attention.

The one up there is claiming victory in sacking 20k teachers (after 2½ years of his goverment).

The one down there is an artist, commissioning statues left right and centre so that when people say they are hungry and need jobs he'll just direct them to the statues.

This is a right step in the right direction, i have been wondering how you can achieve the third largest economy in Africa with an inconsistent supply of electricity, massive traffic hold ups and poor housing. I will urge the governor to declare an emergency summit in the state in Power, Housing, Road and Rail Infrastructure. Ideas should be received and plans drawn towards short term, medium term and long term implementation. Lagos has the wherewithal to be different from any city across Africa. Going to the future, we need to make plans revolving around a green Lagos, a city without generators and phasing out fossil fuel cars.

Ambode is high on coke. He is yet to do something about Apapa traffic gridlock yet he is talking about 24/7 power supply in Lagos. The same way his predecessor Fashola said any serious government can fix power in six months

Pls read well. its easier to get this done in the state. The only problem they have been having is the laws in this regard. Now that everything has been opened up, the state can move forward from where his predesesor left off. Read the bolded comment, thats embeded power made posible by the few small IPP's lagos have. Till now this IPP's has been used to power state infrastructures like hospitals, parastatals, street lights.
