I normally don't like posting in bullish periods because of the popular knowledge that everyone becomes an expert in such periods.

But I feel obliged to give some thoughts to newbies as they pay their NSE fees.

What is suddenly moving the market? Why are prices going up generally? The answer is simple. No more 18%+ interest in Treasury Bill. No more 16%+ interest in Bonds. All the monies that left the market as a result of the sudden increase of interest rates at the peak of our recession is returning back to the stock market. This is good for the market but has a very big disadvantage to inexperienced traders. Why? Because all the stocks will appreciate in price cool Will they remain so? No Why? Because investors will soon discern the good stocks from the bad and hence offload the bad to unfortunate hands who will then hold them through the bearish period or sell at a loss lipsrsealed

In all this, it is important to know everything about the company you are buying their shares, what is in it for you, what is moving their price and most importantly, your exit plan when poo hits the fan. I give you an example, what's special about Fidelity Bank? Is their numbers the best in the banking index? No cheesy then why is everyone looking their way right now? Simply because they declare good dividend historically. Now, you follow the band wagon, buy Fidelity because of this fact, not planning your trade. After the dividend play and ex-dividend date, the players will exit and this will pull back the price. Why? It will no longer be fruitful to hold Fidelity until the next dividend period chikena.

Another of such company is Afriprud. These are even companies with good financials o. So what happens to you if you had gone ahead to buy caverton because the price is rising with the general bull? Or CI Leasing? Or even Skye

Anyway, I'm in my house. If my opinion annoyed you, come and beat me grin

Is this when they exit? In fact, I am coming to beat you up for wrong information. Show your address

Are you saying Good Financials and History of good Dividend Payments are not enough to make Fidelity and Afriprud good stocks? ?

They are anough and I never labeled them as bad stocks if you read carefully. What I'm saying is given our environment and short term nature in this country, you will wake up to find out that you are the only one in a bus traveling to a destination that is different from what is on your booking ticket. With the expected further crash in interest rate next year and FGN decision to settle completely a percentage of maturing Treasury bills, the dividend payout by coys yearly may be higher than the interest received that year on the amount invested. Looking carefully, future investors will be asking where they were when prices where as low as they are today and when DMO starts settling treasury bills rate may go down to low or mid single digit.
Also, most of the coys you see today with some struggling to survive will become more profitable as they will have more cheaper funds turn their businesses around (which is the reason FGN is deciding tobcrash rates) hence more dividend resulting from lower interest.

Good guy. You got my point completely. But note that the herd effect will also affect moribund companies with bad corporate governance and all other negative factors. So it's important to invest in companies that will not packup when the bears come in future. And don't forget that the market moves in crest and troughs. So it may take 7years of plenty but famine will still show up one day.

It is obvious. Even the bears have been unable to water down stock prices as EXPECTED with many still waiting for far lower prices and ending up entering at higher prices. Institutional investors as well as fund administrators are mopping up as we can see huge volumes exchanging hands. No doubt the stock market still have very high potentials enough for everyone to tap from. Next year will be super with the signals on ground and events unfolding.

Big Bro, Corporate governance related issues in moribund companies shouldn't' cause a discredit of the stock market generally. Everyone has his/her investment objective which can be achieved in the market. Discrediting the entire market means none is achievable. Normally, an investor should be very close to happenings in the coy he has invested in or about to. One can invest in a moribond coy where there is info that certain changes that will positively affect the furtunes of the coy are in the pipeline. For instance, Dangflour went down under Tigerbrands and today it is hot cake in the market. Those who positioned early when it was down are celebrating today while some are still down and may come up later. Wrong investors invest and go to sleep only to wake and discover that they have become security men. I guess this forum has helped solve info issues to a large extent. Also, NSE mandated all coy to have a dedicated contact phone no posted on their website for investors query. We can still make use of that. Where a stock is not viable or you sense danger, you port and still make your money. That is the beauty of the market. Even among the diciples there was a Judas and he did not make all the diciples useless.

If the numbers are ok and the stock is trading below intrinsic value, intelligent investor advised we buy it. If the stock dey 'poo' ( give dividend) well, my dear that is the solace in investing in the stock. Any stock with good historical dividend payments with numbers below intrinsic value is a must buy for me.

Your advice is great. Newbies need to heed to your warning especially if those who go buying stocks without checking fundamentals but just looking at price momentum.

It is a good advice!

Since 2014 that oil price started falling and the subsequent depreciation of the naira, the market has been trading low since. This is the trough in my opinion. Now that the FPIs can come with little FX and get more Naira, they will see it as an opportunity to invest in this market. The crest never reach ooo.

We are even yet to test the absurdities of 2007 - 2008. Zenith had a high of 68 then, fidelity was over 8, fbn was .....

Recall:

March 31, 2011

Today, 2.51 billion units of Transcorp Plc, representing 10% of its total outstanding shares (25 billion units) were crossed on the floors of the exchange and no market information was made available in this regard.

This immediately raises concerns with us as this transaction, whilst confirming the analyst comments in our March 22, 2011 review - ‘What's driving the resurgence of the Transcorp price?’ ; indicates a possible takeover bid or an abuse of market processes.

The stock closed today at N1.11k, a 122% YTD increase in price on the back of fundamentals aptly captured in the aforesaid report.

Basic Market Transaction Ethics

To buy at least 5% of a quoted company’s shares, the minimum requirement should, at the very least, follow the following market ethics:

1. The NSE approved broker handling the transaction must enquire from the buyer his/her existing holding in the company;
2. The broker must then proceed to review/add the volume of the intended transaction to/with the existing holding and determine if this goes above the 5% threshold (i.e. what is about to be bought and what is currently held);
3. The broker is therefore obligated to inform/alert The Stock Exchange if the transaction is above the 5% threshold;
4. The Stock Exchange must immediately alert the company of this intended trade, informing the buyer that it has done so;
5. The company would then have a chat with the buyer to determine if it is a takeover bid or not, and to determine any interest such a person may have;
6. The company must within 48hours get back to The Stock Exchange if they have any reservations or objections to such a transaction;
7. If it is a hostile takeover, the provisions of the ISA 2007 in respect of such would form the basis for moving forward.

These basic ethos provide a basic framework in which such transactions have and should be conducted. To have a 10% volume movement treated as just any other transaction is an abuse of the market processes.

Courting a Value laden bride

Ten (10) days ago, little did we know that such would happen but the signs where there. This action simply validates our market call on the Transcorp stock.

In the executive summary published, we made allusions to the set backs in model, board constitution, debt overhang, management challenges and the political risks that confronted the institution which had been deftly managed, against all expectations, to deliver a company that appears focused and ready to deliver on its shareholder commitments. The analysis sought to explain the raison d'être for the resurgence in the price of the stock. Since then (N0.81k) the stock has gained 37.04% (N1.11k) suggesting a sustained interest in the stock.

Today’s Volume Activity

The conglomerate sector led the market transaction volume today with 2.51billion units valued at N2.81 billion (US$19.07Million) exchanged in 198 deals as against 31.28million units valued at N96.31million (US$0.652million) exchanged in 261 deals recorded previous session.

Transaction volume on the exchange surged by 571.82% to close at 2.72 billion units exchanged in 4,842 deals as against an upbeat by 18.97% recorded in previous trading to close at 405.87 million units exchanged in 7,962 deals.

A cursory analysis of the prices and volume figures of Transcorp from January 4, 2011 till date reveals that the Volume today for Transcorp is exceptionally high (2.51 billion units) when its average volume traded during the year is 6.10 million.

The Implications

It would appear that there is an issue with this transaction. Certain persons with funds have decided that this company’s fundamentals represent a good investment and have decided to take advantage of this benefit.

The question now needs to be asked – how did this deal go through – with NSE approval with or without the company’s consent. The board and the NSE owe the market an explanation.

Informed sources point to an ex-bank CEO who has shown a bullish approach to the firm and who has support from a leading stockbroking firm that hitherto had issues of ethical boundaries with the exchange.

We await the report from the NSE on this transaction and a validation or rebuttal of the compliance guidelines

lol...You are right. Where you can you port. Normally some will port. That is where timely information becomes important.The market is an information/news driven market. When a stock is going down continiuosly in a normal or bullish market know that something is amis. Some people look not knowing what is happening until they are left behind. Even big coy with sound financials can go down. Its just information and acting fast....Smart investor. In this age some investors still send mail or call their brokers to buy or sell shares when they can trade online. Taking advantage of any good news to position for profit or bad news to bail out may be difficult for such. Not withstanding, the market is still sound.

I'm on the street listening to people if they will be speaking about stock market like MMM.

For those whose target has been reach, let them take profit.

another sign to watch out for - For those newbies using analogue broker, once he/she begins to tell you 'it is not available' just know that it is time to lift up your matress.

At that time, anything with oil in its name will turn to hot cake grin grin

Anyway our oga Wanaj0 talk say some people made money on top Nospecto
