yes but why spend so much money on military hardware when the govt has not even provided basic amenities to its people

also you should ask yourself why the nigerian govt invests so much in arms procurement, is nigeria at war with anyone?

could it be that these arms are purchased in order to repress any potential uprisings and ensure that the current crooks perpetuate themselves in power?

The military Govts of yrs past neglected our armed forces so there had to be spending to catch up. . . .

Also no serious country on earth leaves its internal/external security needs unmet because it has not eradicated poverty
whether its india,pakistan or usa

In the recent jos crises when innocent Nigerians were killed, its the same military that returned the area to normal for the good life of all citizens

If u think anarchy is best, then pls go study the Sierra leone and Liberian wars, the unnecessary sufferings all because the central Govt could not confront some rag tag rebels
mind u its the so-called common man that was despoiled, killed arms chopped off and so on. . .

A strong military is good for Nigeria. . .period

The sophisticated Nigerian MIlitary equipment has mostly been bought in the last 10yrs. .
so anything before 2001,while still impressive is mostly old stuff. . .

Where exactly do u think ghana has money to buy these so called equipment?
our military budget alone is bigger than the countries total budget

Also we dont need an aircraft carrier to bomb Ghana as accra is only 50mins or so away from Nigeria

You dont get it do you? I said you couldnt fly through togo and Benin. Also why would you target Accra? Is it a Nigerian policy to attack civilians. I was refering to your air force having air supremacy and a ground support role. It can have neither. If you want air supremacy you need to be in Ghanaian air space for quite a while. Your J-7's only just have the ability to go to the west of Ghana and back. Your SEPECAT too would not be able to even do that.
As for your navy, your frigate is still only sea-worthy, if you can show me proof that your Corvettes are back up and running then go ahead and show me. I've shown you the Ghanaian navy so unless you can proove that those corvettes are working then there's no point carrying on. Even if the rest of Ghana's armed forces were shite, if the navy stopped you, who would care about the rest? I hvent said that Ghana bought loads of sophisticated equip. I have given names like Aermacchi MB-326 instead of being vague and saying "sophisticated equipment". Your generation of fighter air craft is third generation. The world has developed 4th, 4.5 and 5th generation fighters so I cant see any "sophisticated equip" there. Some of your army's MBT's were given to you in 1975 (VikersMk3) and the t-55 designed (as it appears to have come in batches so I cant give a transfer date) in 1956 (possibly with some upgrades like reactive armour). Only half of your t-55's remain operational and your Vickers isnt doing that bad in terms of serviceiability.
Do I have to ask again. Show me proof of Ghanaians running on their peacekeeping mission paddy lo

@Lordangers

Your quip about Nigerias Navy deteriorating since 2001,shows u absolutely know nothing about Nigeria or its military

The last 10yrs of democratic rule has been the best for the military in terms of new equipment, training, professionalism, and a real boost in military spending

Obasanjo our former leader in 2006 alone spent over $4billion on new military hardware, ships, tanks and other stuff because of the Niger delta

This is in addition to secret of budget military spending financed by the NNPC

Lol ships for the Niger Delta. Thats patrol craft matey wink
Show me your ships have improved. I dont want to hear money I want to see that the ships are fixed. You look at the French Navies carrier. It's had engine problems and living on a propelar that wasnt designed for it which is slowing it down. Even with all their money they cant find a replacement propellar.

Personally I believe security in Nigeria is paramount. Especially with that North/South (Muslim/Christian) problem. Also it takes part in invaluable peace-keeping missions. I to dont agree in spending billions of dollers on equip if you have kids on the streets with no life ahead of them but you have to protect what you got. That oil needs to be defended for example. Nice pics paddy. The only prob is that they are patrol. Patrol ships that are out of range and you kindly pointed out they are for defensive purposes. Also not one of them had a 76mm auto cannon. Two of Ghanaians ships have that. Also could you please show me some stats like speed if you wouldnt mind. The Ghanains have 2 mine clearers, 2 large patrol ships and 2 logistics ships almost identical to the Nigerians.
As for the gunships you showed me (mi24 or whatever) are out of range too.

Until a few years back, the NA owned a total of SEVENTY MOWAG APCs. MOWAG was taken over by General Motors in 1999, I have just discovered that they have taken delivery of a further SEVENTY units of late-model MOWAG APCs from GM Defence. The variants and configurations are still unclear but we are on to a new start. The initial set of MOWAGs were 6X6 wheelers. The new acquisitions are apparently 8X8 wheelers and the plans for their acquisition may have secretly kicked off around 2006, around the same time as contracts were signed for the delivery of 193 OTOKAR Cobra APCs to the NA. Still doing my research. Until today, Nigeria has been known to have 70 MOWAGs. These new acquisitions appear to have come from North America while the initial 6X6 MOWAGs were built in Switzerland.

MOWAG PIRANHA MK.II-IV (8x8 wheelers), the new!

Again some nice pics. As for Togo and Benin you dont need an air force to stop someone violating you. There's plenty of routes like the UN they could take in bringing around some sanctions and simply doing an immediate trade freeze with you. They could support rebel groups or someone would start palling up with Ghana. And even if you did use their air space you still wouldnt have much flying time and there would be a much bigger reaction time compared to Ghana which means if Ghana sent up planes you wouldnt be able to stop them from the air. You would be heavily reliant on your air defenses on the ground which isnt really much to show off about. Even if you do transport it and set it up in time  undecided
Also a lot of armour you showed were APC's used for the UN peace keeping missions. And how would you transport this stuff too Ghana

Nice facts. Nice and intresting but it's just a matter of getting it there across the sea. Also you havent told me how the Nigerian navy would restle control away from Ghana of it's seas. Patrol boats are out of range. Corvettes are not known to be operational and the Frigate is barely sea-worthy let a lone combat ready.

Cybereagles only takes me to a football site. Also I did not start this "rant". Infact it all came from a compliment to Nigeria's military.

T-72 TANKS - IN THE BEGINNING,
This was the point at which the NA first expressed interest in acquiring vastly-improved T-72 tanks from the Czech Republic in 2002.

Algeria, Nigeria and India have expressed interest in acquisition of Czech Army surplus T-72 tanks, according to the 9 May(2002) edition of the daily newspaper Pravo. Defense Minister Jaroslav Tvrdik noted that while the army planned to sell the tanks, he would not specify a specific destination since general elections were scheduled for mid-June and he didn't want the issue to become part of the debates.

Ales Truxa, the director of the Novy Jicin-based Military Repair Shop (VOP) 025, informed reporters of this on 11 March 2002 that the first modernized T-72M4 CZ tanks will be handed over to Czech Army units in the fall of 2003. VOP 025 was building five test tanks at the time and had a contract to deliver 30 by 2005 (along with five sets of modernized spare components).

The Czech Republic planned to upgrade 140 T-72M1 tanks to T-72CZ standard, which will include ERA, Officine Galileo TURMS-T computerized fire control system and a new powerpack by NIMDA of Israel with 736 kW Perkins engine and Allison automatic transmission.

Company literature claims that the T-72M4CZ is four times more-capable of hitting a target on the move than the original T-72 and can acquire targets at night to ranges of 2.0 to 2.2 km.

The modernized T-72M4 CZ is a result of co-operation between 20 Czech and four foreign companies. The VOP 25 enterprise's management did not want to divulge the costs of modernizing the tank.

A Czech business delegation that accompanied Foreign Minister Jan Kavan at the beginning of March held talks on the sale of modernized T-72s to Algeria. The Czechs hope that, in the event of an Algerian contract, the army and VOP 25 would be able to lower the costs of rearmament and, at the same time, rid themselves of the cost of maintaining surplus weapons.
The Czechs claim that their upgraded tank has a five times higher range of fire and significantly improved fire accuracy.

155mm artillery- FH-77 B05 L52 (BOFORS 155mm gun-howitzer) 48 UNITS

THE IMPERIOUS 155mm BOFORS ARCHER wheeled artillery, went into service in 2008 and ONLY Nigeria, India and Sweden have taken delivery of any units.

TECHNICAL DETAILS OF THE BOFORS ARCHER

The Archer is a next generation artillery system(way to go! ). It was developed as a replacement for FH 77A and FH 77B towed howitzers. It is expected to enter service with Swedish Army in 2008. A number of other countries expressed interest in purchasing this artillery system.

This artillery system is a further development of the FH 77B 155-mm howitzer. It's barrel was extended to 52 calibers to give longer range of fire. The Archer has a rapid, automatic loading system. Maximum range of fire is 30 km with ordinary projectile and 40 km with rocket-assisted projectile. The Archer also fires Excalibur precision guided extended range projectiles with a maximum range of 60 km. It is also compatible with Bonus precision guided projectiles.

Maximum a rate of fire of 8 - 9 rounds per minute. The Archer is capable of multiple-round simultaneous - impact firing. It fires up to 6 rounds in 30 seconds, each in different trajectories, so that all of the shells arrive on target at the same time. The Archer transports 20 rounds.

It takes only 30 seconds to stop and be ready for firing. Out of action time is also as short as 30 seconds. Brief redeployment time allows to avoid counter-battery fire.

Secondary armament consists of LEMUR remotely controlled weapon system, fitted with 12.7-mm machine gun and smoke grenade dischargers.

The Archer has a crew of four, consisting of one driver and three operators. If necessary this artillery system can be operated by only two men (driver and one operator). Artillery system is operated remotely from the cab.

Cab and artillery system of the Archer is protected against small arms fire and artillery shell fragments. It is fitted with an automatic fire suppression system. It is worth mentioning that only vital parts of the artillery system are protected. Cab is fitted with NBC protection system and provides some degree of protection against landmines.

The Archer artillery system is mounted on the commercially available Volvo A30D 6x6 articulated hauler chassis. Vehicle id fitted with emergency driving equipment, which makes possible to drive with all wheels punctured. The Archer can be airlifted by the Airbus A400M transport aircraft.

The Archer is reloaded by ammunition re-supply vehicle. Every self-propelled artillery system is assigned with one re-supply vehicle. Reloading time is up to 8 minutes. If necessary the gun can be loaded by re-supply personnel alone. The Archer is also assigned with one support (maintenance) vehicle per unit. It conducts refueling and simple maintenance.

QUOTE 1
When Nigerian troops stormed FreeTown that was pretty impressive stuff, especially after all the kitty footing by the US and co.
QUOTE 2
"Impressive?
That's an understatement. Those guys can fight. In 1999, the fighting was intense around my area and boy did the Nigerians put up a strong fight. They suffered a lot of casualties, but my goodness they never gave up.

PS: the same cannot be said of the Ghanaians who claimed they're there for peacekeeping and refused to take part in combat. In fact, the Nigerians will fight for hours or even days before capturing an area and then the Ghanaians will then create a check point, with lots of sand bags of cos. They will then hide behind the sandbags like chickens.
Chei! Those Ghanaians did not do themselves too many favours in Freetown sha as we used to say they're cowards"

NIGERIAN NAVY RECEIVE YET ANOTHER BRAND-NEW SHALDAG ULTRAFAST ATTACK CRAFT

Navy acquires Israeli fast patrol boat
Saturday, July 25, 2009

The Nigerian Navy has taken delivery of a new fast class Israeli patrol boat for its policing and interdiction duties.

The Shaldag class Fast Patrol Boat has a boat length of 24.8 metres Beam, 6 metres draught, 1.2 metres propulsion, 2x MTU 12V 396 TE engines driving two steerable Ka Me Wa water jets Speed, 50 knots (Full Speed) and 45 knots (Cruising Speed).

Director of Naval Information, Commodore David Nabaida said; “yes, we have already received the patrol boat and is right now on trial service with the Nigerian Navy crew assigned to it.”

Developed for the Israeli Sea Corps (ISC), it was built by the Israeli firm IAI-Ramta.Launched in 1989, it has since seen service in several other navies including the Sri Lankan Navy. The Shaldag class Fast Patrol Boats is designed for security tasks where high intercept speeds are required, such as interdiction of terrorism and illegal smuggling.

Its unique features include:
• High speed in rough seas, with good sea keeping and outstanding manoeuvrability;
• Exceptionally low slamming in all sea states;
• Dry decks at all speeds; and
• Very spacious and accessible internal arrangement.

According to the boat specifications, in its design and construction, it has a hull, deck and deckhouse welded marine aluminium alloy, with transverse frames and longitudinal. Integral double bottom tanks contain fuel with an additional gravity fuel tank at the centre. The hull is divided into 6 watertight compartments which do meet strict international flooded damage stability criteria.

For it is configured for the Typhoon G - mounting a Oerilkon 20 mm cannon and electro-optics systems on foredeck and aft deck rings for 20 mm. single gun mount Spigots for 0.5" machine guns on both sides of the main deck. The boat is able to accommodate most advanced new weapon systems, such as the rapid-fire stabilized gun mount, remotely controlled by a night vision system.

Wife of the President, Hajia Turai Musa Yar’Adua had on April 14, 2009 commissioned the two 38-metre Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) - NNS ZARIA and NNS BURUTU and two new Augusta helicopters.

The two OPVs, designed by Suncraft International Inc. Singapore were received into the inventory by top naval officials in Lagos in the first week of March.

Good pics. Liked the t-72 ones. And yes you probebly would take an air field but you have to take it first. You wouldnt have air support or armour as you couldnt transport it. Then your biggest transport air craft can not (lets get this straight), can not in any way carry more then 20,000 KG when the nessasery weight in KG for a t-72 is around 41,000 KG. That means you would need to break it down, transport it in 2/6 of your best transports (c-130)then send over engineers and crew to bring it back together (if it's that simple) and then ferry supplies continuasly. So you could probebly set up 2 tanks a week and keep supplying 4-6 by air.
Also im just saying you may invade Ghana say to topple an evil dicator that threatens Nigeria in some way so to hypothesize

Also you have shown me a source from one person in Sierre Leon. One persons view. Which is better then nothing but would you please from now on simply copy and paste the hyperlink so I can go directly as I am unfourtunalty completely clueless when it comes to whipping around new sites. embarassed cry
Oh yes and I just saw the post on how to use the site. Ok Ill have a look at it in the mourning thanks. By the sound of all the stuff you have accumilated it's quite impressive and promising

I have already explained that the Nigerian navy's patrol boats are out of range and are used against rebels. Not to mention none of them have a gun that can out-pound a 76mm auto-cannon. And as for the Corvettes well I think it's my trun to go looking for sources to prove you wrong. You've put so much in. Learnt a lot and I hope loads here have to

If u think anarchy is best, then pls go study the Sierra leone and Liberian wars, the unnecessary sufferings all because the central Govt could not confront some rag tag rebels
mind u its the so-called common man that was despoiled, killed arms chopped off and so on. . .

A strong military is good for Nigeria. . .period

catch up and do what? you are celebrating the huge expenditure that the nigerian govt has made on military hardware without being able to feed and provide for its own citizens, what kind of warped mentality is that?, nigeria even with all these second hand planes, ships guns etc CANNOT PREVENT AN ATTACK FROM NATO OR THE UN so what is the big deal here.

I will repeat what i said earlier nigeria is being armed to the teeth by way of US military aid in order TO REPRESS AND KILL ITS OWN PEOPLE- how admirable is that?

I cant beleive that you had the nerve to mention Jos, was it not the same nigerian military who stood down and allowed the massacre of innocent men, women and children, by an unknown group of fulanis,a nigerian army officer was well aware of the impending massacre that was about to take place but DID ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO STOP IT.

Of course anarchy isnt best but nigeria is currently in a stage of controlled anarchy, but i agree with what you said about liberia and sierra leone disintegrating into anarchy.

Its not about posting pictures of tanks and aircraft for the whole world to see. Its about good governance in Nigeria, along with ensuring that our military is professional.

This so-called "tribute" is nonsense.

PLS Nigeria buys very little equipment from the USA. . .u must be talking of EGYPT

AND how many Nigerians have the military killed. . .u must be smoking something in that UK u live
a lot of u guys have stayed out of the country so long u are out of touch with reality and listen to propaganda. . .

Nigerians regularly have one communal clash or the other and it is this same military that goes to cool things down
Perhaps u want us to be like congo were the military is so weak,it cannot protect its civilians and 5 Foriegn armys invade it,loot and kill its citizens

U talk of UN. . .or NATO. . .How are they faring in Afghanistan or Iraq. . pls u are bringing emotions to this

and before u slander the NIGERIAN MILITARY on JOS know that without them being there the animals there will still be killing themselves
u cannot blame peacekeepers for conflict
and if the peacekeepers have one or 2 bad eggs(alledgedly),then improve the training logistics, equipment and pay
not rubbish them like u are doing here

Its funny u hide in the UK behind a strong UK military
but dont wish the same for your citizens in NIGERIA. . .

I advise u to stop visiting this page if u have nothing better to say. . .rubbish

The Nigerian military has become more professional since 2000. . .
They deserve the praise. . .and about governance pls direct that to the politicians. . .

Liberia: Nigerian Signal Unit Arrive to Serve UNMIL Charged to Exercise Professionalism
16 September 2009

About 79 radio communication technicians of the Nigerian Army Signals (NISIG) have arrived in Monrovia to take over communication service delivery for UNMIL Forces.

The new batch, NISIG 10, takes over from NISIG 9, which has been rendering services for the last six months. The total number expected in a rotation to be completed on Monday 21 September 2009 is 160 technicians, a release sign by Captain EM ADENIYI, Public Information Officer of NIGCON 21, stated.

The Commander of Sector A/Nigerian Contingent (NIGCON) of UNMIL Brig Gen Ebiobowei Bonna Awala, who heartily welcomed them into Nigerian Contingent family promptly, took census of those that have participated in ECOMOG before this recent deployment.

According to him, he deemed it fit doing that to know how to tailor his address to them.

Gen Awala informed the 79 radio communication technicians that the rule of peacekeeping or peace enforcement under ECOMOG is never the same as that of UNMIL, noting that the rule has changed.

What was not an offence during ECOMOG because of the war situation is a big offence under UNMIL, though they must have been given enough lectures on this, back home, during their pre-induction lectures, Gen Awala told the new comers.

He charged them to see their deployment to UNMIL to participate in the peace building process as special privilege which will always go on record throughout their life history that as "such and such a time I was part of the success story in UNMIL."

The Commander therefore urged them to avoid anything that will dent their individual image, that of Nigerian Contingent and that of their great nation Nigeria, adding that NISIG in particular has no doubt built an excellent reputation over the years, and none of them should be seen acting as spoiler.
