Benin is different from Bénin. Benin metamorphosed from Ule Ibinu to current day Benin in Nigeria. While Bénin Republic came into existence as a result of the Damohey people's welcoming attitude towards the white, when they came in contact with them i.e strangers,especially the French. Yeah,Bénin has French meaning. Like I had mentioned earlier in previous post. You can google it in French and its English translation. The Dahomey were the ones that the French used the word on because of their hospitality and mild attitude toward them(French visitors) to Dahomey before the conquest. The reality is that a lot of Nigerians are non researchers but based their opinion on personal ideologies. This is the reason, the western World researchers haven't taken many Nigeria's pretty colonial era seriously except the ones they were directly involved in the excavation of Art work and other antiquities. The more research you do, the more information you find.

It seems the yoruba moderators are on a crusade against Edo people on nairaland. We are not even alowed to comment in topics about our own history. Many of us are systematically banned when we come here with proof, while those who keep trolling us are allowed to go unpunished.

One fact: untill recently the only meaning of the word Benin in the french dictionnary was: The precolonial country ruled by Omo n'Oba n'Edo.
For those who are not aware of this, let me say that the french language is a living language, the french accademy routinely modifies the french dictionnary. So when looking at a word which is in the french dictionnary, you have to ask yourself when it entered the french dictionnary.
Until recently the word bénigne derived from the latin word benignus was on the french dictionnary with the meaning which has recently been transfered to the word bénin in an attempt to modernise the french language.
