As more and more people advocate for the abolition of the bride price, a Nigerian woman by name Vivian Emesaraonye Dimgba from Mbaise, Imo state today shocked many people after revealing that her husband was given a marriage list that was nearly N800,000.

The pretty woman who got married 10 years ago got people talking over the revelation. Gender equality advocates have called for the abolition of 'bride price' and 'marriage list' saying that it makes it look like the woman is nothing but an item for sale. Some say that bride price is not actually the problem, but the list which can drain a man's lifesaving.

Making the revelation, Dimgba wrote: "I'm from Mbaise.. The list alone cost close to 800k and that was my Dad being nice.
If only I knew then, what I know now.

Bride price is a stupid tradition that shouldn't have any place in a modern world. Whether 1 naira or 1 million.

I remember when I gave my sisters out in marriage...together wit the elders I collected not more than #2500 on each...as dowry.
I wanted even collect less......
I think the bride price in some cultures need to be reduced or revisited but not to be totally scrapped out...

You're on point but then it is surprising you didn't mention a thing about the said marriage list. Bride price in my place is N75 and the totality of a marriage list does not exceed N150k, save for cases the groom or his family intends to announce themselves.

Asking a potential groom to provide certain items worth 800k ten years ago or now is nothing but sheer greed and not necessarily bent on tradition.

Our values and cultures must by all means be preserved but there is a need to abolish some practices because they are detrimental to people, one of them is the female circumcision. And the excuse or reason for this? Just so a lady does not get excited over thoughts of sex and become loose afterwards. Female circumcision has been responsible for the frigidity of some women folks because their clits were severed. For the ones unlucky ones, they are damned by being rendered useless from ever becoming a woman because 'something went wrong'.

That I believe it is high time I settled does it mean one useless family would think it is the perfect opportunity to cash in on their daughter.

It's a yardstick to test the ability of men to take care of you in future. Learn not to be wiser than your elders. For a man that want a wife for keeps for life, a man should be encouraged to go all out and look for means to handle his wedding. It is a test of strength like in the old times when men had to go hunting for game before they could take a wife. This was done to actuate the strength of the man to make sure you don't end with lazy men. Get understanding in all your getting.
