Some people say there must be profit before taxes can be charged. That is a layman thinking. When PAYE is charged on salary, what profit do the payers make? There is what is called taxable income. This is simply what is left after some statutory allowances are deducted from the gross income. 1 Like 1 Share |

FOLYKAZE:petty liar. Churches n mosques are registered as charities in us n uk and they dont pay tax. Their books n spending are however scrutinised by govt. In nigeria, pastors who earn salaries pay income tax and even do contributory pension. And finaly for your info... Land use charge is not tax on your income or profit. It is more like a token you pay on your landed property which is normal globaly. Its being done even in some states in nigeria. Religous bodies pay it. 1 Like |

teefaht: Mosques collect donations, they sell religious materials. They also have schools sometime inside the mosque or a building beside where student pay school fees. All these must be taxed duly. Moreso, the mosque should pay property tax. 1 Like |

FOLYKAZE:If churches and mosque are taxed, then NGOs should be taxed too for they both receive charity and donations voluntarily from individuals. However any church which has a separate business structure like schools, hostels, hotels or printing press should be taxed on those but never as a church. |

shekauvsbuhari: Churches and religious organizations are generally exempt from income tax and receive other favorable treatment under the tax law; however, certain income of a church or religious organization may be subject to tax, such as income from an unrelated business. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1828.pdf |

My brother, its too bad that you'll say that. The president was flown out in the presidential jet, parked at the airport over there for months on end, the crew had to be maintained there as well....does the president pay for the presidential jet and its running expenses from his private coffers? If his son is flown out in the presidential jet, with it's crew and the retinue of officials that will go along, is the president going to pay from his own wallet. Make we even forget the actual hospital bills at this point. Please let's be sincere and objective with ourselves. FOLYKAZE: |

FOLYKAZE: You appear ignorant of goings on in the country. Churches are already remitting PAYE to state governments for its full time staff. Its nothing new. Taxing the Church organization as a profit making entity is extremely wrong. Why then are they in the same category as NGOs who render PAYE to government for its employed staff but are not taxed as a profit making organization? Do mosques and churches keep profit and loss accounts? |

FOLYKAZE:To the extent where it is ascertained that the church earns income from its activities, then and there will the need arise for such income to be taxed. But if you keep saying churches earn income and I am wondering in my mind if it's the offerings, tithes and other voluntary donations you have in mind, you obviously need open-mindedness... |

FOLYKAZE:This is incorrect. In UK, Churches and mosques (including other registered charities)are not required to pay tax on donations. As a matter of fact, you can claim an extra 25p for every £1 a tax payer give to the church or mosque. The whole point is to avoid double taxation as was rightly mentioned by another poster. A better solution is to do what UK does by forcing the churches and mosques to be transparent with their incomes. |

OversightTM: Don't try to argue a point you don't understand. When you donate to a church, it is no longer your money, it is the church's money, you can't be taxed on a money that isn't yours to begin with. All income have already been taxed. Even if you work for a company. The company's customer were taxed before buying their products and that doesn't exempt your company from being taxed. If you still don't get it, please use google. |

FOLYKAZE:they are like NGOs n charity organisations. That is how CAC classify them.they are run by donations from people n organisations. From that donation they pay guys that work for them. Rotary club for instance cant pay tax but they pay workers that work for them. If however church sets up a biz like fee-charging school. If de skul makes profit, it will pay tax.if it publishes book for profitable sale,it will pay tax. But that offering n tithe or whatever donation is not taxed bcs its a voluntary donation by people for de running of de charity. It is not classified as biz. U dnt sell prayer or charge fee for church attendance. The law does not see it as biz in the real sense of it. They are organisations that voluntarily help de society though there are abuses here and there. |

OversightTM: Sales of books and religious material can be taxed. Profit are been made in this case. However, my concern is on offering, tithes and donations. It is a money making scheme for the church and pastors. I believe the salaries and earnings plus allowances come from offering and tithe. Moreso, bulk of this money is spent on the frivolous life of pastors. Because today, we barely see roads or free schools built by church for public consumption. Hence, these inflow does not amount to charity and should be taxed. |
