I agree that Mikel lacks the pace of somebody like Michael Essien, but he doesn't really need superb pace to be a world class DM or CM or AM. Jay Jay Okocha didn't have much pace either.

O pari

TheGoodJoe:

Mikel Obi does not play with pace. So, you can not expect him to play like Essien. Essien can create gaps and try to force attacks. When the team loses the ball, he can track back with pace. For Mikel Obi, it is different, he prefers to solidify the defence, keep it tight. He does not take risk with the ball. If Mikel Obi makes mistakes, it is so obvious because it is unusual.

Even Busquets that plays in a highly offensive side does not take much risk. This is due to his ability to play the role without pace.

To you, Mikel Obi should do more. To Gus Hiddink, former coach of Netherlands and Chelsea, Mikel Obi provides the right balance. Just that his contribution is underrated.

Transfer rumor from France

Maignan could be moving to Monaco from Lille. Enyeama could be moved to number 1 to compensate for the departure.

The top league in the 90's was the Italian league. Far far superior to others at that especially in the early 90's(infact beginning from the late 80's with Sacchi's revolution) and then Spain. Go do a study of the top players of that era and tell me where they were playing. Where was Van Bast, Riboldedd? Maldini, Baggio, Stoichkov, Batistuta, Romario were all in Italy. Of all the players that won the world best in the period under review not one from the Dutch league(indeed Van Basten, Gullit and Rijkaard left Holland for Italy) apart from Ajax all the teams making the UEFA champions league finals in the period were from Italy and Spain mostly

no 2 If by European champion you mean champions league then you are wrong unless you mean the glory days of the Dutch league way back in the 70's when Cruyff led Ajax to the Super cup or the super cup in the 95.If it's the Champions league they won it first against Milan.

And how many players did we have at Ajax in 94? Just Finidi. We have Moses in Chelsea today. Not comparing them but since its big clubs you want I give you Moses.

Nope, Portugal was just one place where football was played. Their glory days was in the 60's with Eusebio and put your eyes on the period (1990-1994) cos Italy reigned supreme then. The bolded is pathetic. So don't we have teams like Qarabag and teams from the back water leagues of Europe competing in the Champion's league? So 20 years from now you will use that to argue that Azerbaijan and Romania were top leagues in Europe because their teams were COMPETING in the Champion' s league. no 1 Belgium was the kindergarten of the major leagues in Europe in the 90's. Check UEFA champions league finals from 90-2000 if you will see one Belgian or Portuguese club. None.

Pay attention to the period under review. Whatever those clubs had achieved before the 90's when our players began to make their way in numbers to Europe is for the glory of those clubs. It has nothing to do with our players. You yourself has acknowledged that the best league then was Italian serie A. Fact is we had no single player there.

Teams play better now and football has improved now as a team sport. But the players of that era were far technically superior and gifted than the players of today. So you are making my point for me. You can only elevate the past team over this guys in regard to their clubs and leagues only if we had the majority of our players then in Italy and Spain or if the majority of our players today are playing in Zanaco and Orlando Pirates. As far as I can see, club wise they are both on the same level if this current crop are not even better because the 94 crop had lots of unattached players and bench warmers.

no 1 Going by what? Portugal was not top 3 or 4 in the early 90's. As for Rashidi, God rest his soul. But let me (thanks to the Internet and excellent record keeping of oyibo people) burst your bubble. Rashidi joined vitoria setubal in 1990-94. In the 90/91 season vitoria setubal were relegated to division two. In the 91/92 season they were in the second division through to the 92/93 season. In 93/94 they were promoted to the primera division and that was when Yekini scored 21 goals to top the charts. By 94/95 they were relegated. So Rashidi was playing in a low profile club in a league which was just one among others in Europe. Wikipedia for Setubal:
After another yo-yo period from the mid-1980s to the mid-2000s, Vitória returned to the Portuguese top flight for the 2004–05 season and have remained there since
.
It's not like it at all. It's more like what it was then. I can't find anything in the present to compare to that.

Ajax won the Champions league in 95. As at 94 Ajax were not the best team in the world.

no 3 Onyekuru is doing the equivalent of what Ikpeba did.

Ikpeba didn't come into his own at Monaco(which he joined 1993-1999) in the 93/94 season. He had a tough start at Monaco and it was from 96 that he gradually became a success ( a lesson for the Iheanacho naysayers). They were not the Mbappe of that era. If they were they would have been playing in Italy and Spain. PSG of Mbappe era has Neymar for godsakes. That should tell you the level.

I said give me the INDIVIDUAL awards the OTHERS in the team apart from Rashidi and Amokachi won. You've given me nada. You just mentioned Rashidi and Amokachi again. Finidi won nothing in 94 and nothing individual throughout his career. Ikpeba too won nothing individual as at 94. (I am pegging it to 94 because that is the WC year just like 2018 is the WC year for this crop)

It's like you are dwelling in the 80's. I am talking early 90's. Forget what Belgium was in the 80's. The leagues and clubs of both squads are comparatively at the same level. fact is the 94 team was full of bench warmers, unattached players and players in India and ivory Coast. You can't change that fact notwithstanding that Amokachi and Yekini were outstanding. In the end whatever their club or league levels they got the job done to the extent they could and they rightly deserve to be called golden generation. This current guys too have given indications that they can rise up to that level and better that record. Now a little something for you to chew on: Iceland has no stellar quality except perhaps the guy that plays for Everton. Yet they beat a star studded England side at the Euros and edged out a vastly superior Croatia to qualify for the World Cup despite the Modrics, perisic, mandzukics, Konami, Rakitic boasted of by Croatia. Football has moved beyond stellar names. This much I - who loves the 90's with Baggio them have realised. I know it's comforting to you when you see a team filled with star dust but it's cold comfort these days. Team work wins. Not stellar names and big clubs. This is the age of Aquarius. The age of Pisces is gone.

Take note that 1 Belgian and 2 Dutch clubs were in the top 10 best in Europe.

The Belgian league was the third best in Europe in 1980 and a Belgian club was the second best club in Europe going by the UEFA rating. This is counters your false notion that it was a kindergarten league as you claimed in the number 1 @bolded.

Another of your wrong submissions in bolded no 2 that the Dutch league glory days was in the 60s, Ajax won their first champions league in 95 and only Ajax was prominent in Eredivise have also all being countered because Eredivise was rated the 4 best in 80 and Ajax and PSV were one of the best clubs in Europe. These continued until mid 80s.

What!? Anderlecht the best club in Europe!?

If they tell you the Belgian league is kindergarten based on these stats over 6 years will you believe it?

Based on this, which league do you think a player would like to go as at 1986?

Off course, the Belgium was among the most attractive ant top league in Europe hence the exodus to Belgium league by these Nigerian players at that.

Or does that not explain why many Nigerians went Belgium league?

Therefore, it is indeed convenient to say that Chidi Nwanu, Austin Eguavoen, Stephen Keshi, Victor Ikpeba, Samson Siasia and Peter Rufia played against the best club in the Europe and the fourth best league in Europe going to the WC.

How can a club from kindergarten league be the third best club in Europe?

The fact remains that the Belgian league was the most consistent league in the top 5 in Europe from Early 80s to late 80s.

Pls, take not of the rise of the Portuguese liga and clubs from that time. They have one of their club in the top 5 and another one in top 10.

4. Belgium - Pro league
5. Portugal- Liga

Did you ask me why Nigerian players are not in Seria A?

As you can see they had options to choose from among the top 5 leagues in Europe and Italy was not the only best options.

As you can see we had players in the top 5 leagues in the world with two playing with the best at one time. Anderlecht off course!

Let me inform you that Sunday oilseh, Alloy Agu and Daniel Amokachi moved to the fouth best league in the Europe. The next three seasons Victor Ikpeba and Daniel Amokachi had won 3 Ebony awards and best foreign player award while Chidi Nwanu came 3rd once.

Based on these facts from a reliable concrete source Onyekuru is not doing wha Ikpeba and Daniel did. Why? He is not playing in the top 4 league in Europe and he didn't win any individual award.

Can you now they were the Mbbappe of this era?

The bolded no 4 had been put rest going by this stats that proved the Portuguese league was among the top leagues in Europe in the early 90s

Benfica was rated the 4th best in Europe while fc Porto was slightly among the top 10 club in Europe.

In addition, two Portuguese club reached the finals of the UEFA champions league 3 times from 87 - 90 but won it once.

This was the season Rashidi Yekin went to Portugal which was the 5th best league in Europe as at 1990. This was before he dominated all the leagues he went to then. Pls, don't tell me that the Nigeria league was substandard in the Early 80s because I whitenesed live matches in 84 and 85 and I can tell you it was standard with quality football. It explains why we won the AFCON the time in 1980 and got to the finals of Champions league and cup winners cup regularly during that era.

From 1975 - 1990, there was no way you will not see a Nigerian club in any finals of the highest African tournaments.

Shooting stars and African sports were the top clubs in Africa then as at the time he play there.

Let me remind you that was he the highest goal scorer in all the leagues he went to prior to the WC. He was African player of the year in 1993 and runner up in 1994. Don't forget he was the overall best player of the 1994 AFCON. Emmanuel Amunike was tge best African player in1994 going to the WC.

Rashidi came to the team when they were in division 2, his goals helped them gain promotion (top scorer in div 2)

In the Premiere, he emerged top scorer and claimed the Apoty. (He achieved all these while being the least paid player in the club)

One again, I don't know what youre trying to prove. I have never judged a player by the league they played. I look at performance.

I honestly cannot figure out the corner stone of your argument.

He is trying to tell you that according to two other guys here,.. The fact that he was playing for a division 2 club is a big worry and that he would or should never be considered playing for us at all.

You can't win the lottery if you never bought the ticket.

Yekini would never had shone in the GWG owing to yardstick those two guys on this thread are using for this current SE players because he would never have been considered at all since he was playing in a backwater Division 2 league.

If you still don't get his point,.. Then I am sorry.. This is a lost cause

We all should know the origin of this whole argument.

Two people on this thread had set a yardstick for measuring a call-up to the SE. They are on the opinion that only players playing in the top leagues are considered good enough for the SE... Funny enough the tops leagues in their own opinion are

English Premiership
English Championship
English League one
English League two
English conference

Ahead of
Bundesliga
LA liga
Serial A
Ligue 1
Jupiler
Eresdivisie
Etc
grin grin grin

If their logic was to hold true in '94, more than half of that squad had no business in the team grin

Yekini olympiakos Pireuse out
Alonysios Agu kayerispor out
Peter Rufai fariense out
Michael Enemalo- no club -out
Stephen keshi - no club- out

All these people saying we have poor or below average players. Please I want to ask you a question o. Going by your submission that our players are poor, which I acquiesce to only because of this question by the way, PLEASE WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
Tell FIFA to replace us with Ivory Coast, since they have star players and we do not?
Wait till "February" when the "international transfer window" opens, then urge Buhari to solicit more loans from Paris Club so we can buy Neymar, Van Dijk, Kante and De gea?
Please I will be happy if you can answer the question.
WHAT MUST WE DO TO BE SAVED? Some of us are really confused. So you can allay our fears and confusion by answering the questions

Thanks

KPOM!

And he had the skills to be as good as Pogba if not better. One thing with Africans especially Nigerian players is their tendency to settle and become comfortable wherever they are. If I have the talents of Mikel, I would never have stayed one day on Chelsea bench. And that's because there's no way I would've settled.

Had numerous opportunities to move to Inter and Valencia, but we know why he insisted on staying...

Your second point is really a very good idea.
We need to buy the entire Barcelona attack and then the top 3 rated goalies in Europe.

I agree that Mikel lacks the pace of somebody like Michael Essien, but he doesn't really need superb pace to be a world class DM or CM or AM. Jay Jay Okocha didn't have much pace either.

O pari

“Why put another layer of gold paint on the Bentley when you are losing the entire engine?”... Zidane

Zidane's words best explains my point. People tag glamour as World Class. However, despite the magic in Jay Jay, he did not have that Longevity in the game as Mikel Obi. Mikel Obi's impact is really underrated but if you keep in mind the achievement of Chelsea during his time in the club and keep Zidane's train of thought in context, you will know Mikel's contribution to the team was World Class.

"He's the ideal player to bring balance to the team.

"If the team is not willing to defend well, or hasn't got the right balance, then you'll concede a lot of goals. I think John Obi can be one of the key figures in bringing back that balance.

"He reads the game very well, he knows where the strength of the opponent is and knows how to combat that. He has very good sense, he doesn't do it in a brutal way, he's very elegant. Someone who can defend so smoothly is very beautiful."... Gus Hiddink

Gus Hiddink's words summarize the importance of Mikel's contribution to the success of Chelsea. Maybe, not appreciated by many. Maybe, not seen as World Class. However, that does not change the fact that John Mikel Obi's contribution to Chelsea was World Class.

Finally, an interesting piece of Stats:

Before Gus Hiddink brought Mikel Obi back to the starting line-up of Chelsea, It took Chelsea 18 matches to keep four Clean sheets. With Mikel Obi's introduction, Chelsea achieved that in 6 games. If that is not World Class, what is?

Tell them I said that.

This is the truth. Mou expected Mikel to be like Pogba is at the moment. I remember after the Confederations cup he said something like Mikel still doesn't score goals but he's still difficult to get the ball off...subtle hint at him not improving as much as he would've liked all those years.

You make it sound as if Pogba shields the defence. He does not do that and he does not know how to do it. Mourinho could play Mikel Obi ad his defensive midfielder but will find it difficult to play Pogba there.

Read this excerpt of Jamie Carragher's take on Pogba in the first Manchester derby last season.

“For a central midfielder in a game of that magnitude, I think for the first 40 minutes it was one of the most ill-disciplined performances you will see.

“The only way to describe it was like watching the best player in the schoolyard that runs where he wants and does what he wants.

“Five minutes into a Manchester derby, when you know the centre of the pitch is so important to stopping Man City, he finds himself in a left-wing role trying to receive the ball.

“I never thought I’d say this, but I felt so sorry for Fellaini. He was left on his own in the centre of the pitch and there was so much space.

“Pogba has cost what he has cost and he has done what he has done, he’s not a kid. He is 23. You find yourself looking at situations where Man Utd are leaving acres of space in the most important part of the pitch against a Pep Guardiola team.

“His job, when you are playing in a two in midfield, is to be disciplined, especially against Silva and De Bruyne. It is either he has got it wrong or Mourinho has given him licence to do what he wants and that is wrong.”

You might praise Pogba for his flamboyancy and driven shots but as Carragher explained, sometimes his play lacks discipline and looks like a schoolboy in the pitch. He lacks a key ingredient Mikel Obi has, discipline.

Nigerian Footballers With Wrong Transfer Moves In 2017

1 December 29, 2017 9:34 am

With the year 2017 coming to an end Completesportsnigeria.com’s JOHNNY EDWARD presents five Nigerian Footballers who made wrong transfer moves during the year.

Brown Ideye (Olympiakos to Tianjin TEDA for £10.8m)
After a miserable spell with West Bromwich Albion F.C. Albion in the English Premier League, Brown Ideye rediscovered his goal scoring form playing for Olympiakos when he joined the Greek champions in the summer of 2016. He scored 10 league goals to help Olympiakos win the Greek title for the 43rd time in their 91-year history. During his short stint with the club, he scored 28 goals and provided ten assists in 65 appearances. But surprisingly, he opted to join Tianjin TEDA during the January 2017 transfer window. After failing to hit the height expected, Ideye soon fell out with the club’s manager and was demoted to the second team afterwards. He scored four goals in his first 14 games. The move also jeopardized his chances of keeping his place in the Super Eagles squad.

Emmanuel Emenike (Fenerbahce to Olympiakos £3m)
Having played on loan at Al Ain in the United Arab Emirates and West Ham United, Emenike ended his four year stint with Fenerbahce and joined Olympiakos on a two year deal with an option of another year. He was expected replace his compatriot Brown Ideye who moved to Tianjin TEDA, but he never flourished. Emenike has not made Olympiakos’ matchday squad for the last eight weeks and has missed his team’s last 18 games though he has scored four goals in ten games for the Greek Champions.

Imoh Ezekiel (Al Arabi to Konyaspor £3m)
Despite sealing a big-money move to Qatar in 2014, petit forward Imoh Ezekiel wasn’t really a big success for Al Arabi during his time there in the UAE. He returned to Belgium for loan spells with former club Standard Liege and giants Anderlecht after his first six months at Al Arabi.
On his return, he scored 11 goals in 33 appearances during the 18 months he spent at Al Arabi. Ezekiel opted to join Turkish side Konyaspor with one year left on his deal at Al Arabi in a bid to rediscover his scoring form, but alas, in 13 appearances (10 as substitutes) in the Turkish Super Lig, the one cap Nigeria international never found the back of the net before terminating his contract in December.

Kelechi Iheanacho (Manchester City to Leicester City, £25m)
Kelechi Iheanacho is yet to live up to his £25m price tag at Leicester City. He has just scored once since arriving from Manchester City in the summer. Iheanacho’s poor form has seen him drop to third in Claude Puel’s striking pecking order behind Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki. Many had expected the Nigeria international to walk straight into the Foxes’ starting lineup, but that has not been the case. Iheanacho’s goal scoring record in the English Premier League has also reduced. At Leicester City, he has one goal in 393 minutes which is some way shy of his Manchester City average of one goal every 100 minutes. He appears to be declining.

Olanrewaju Kayode, Austria Wein to Manchester City – £4m (Loanee at Girona)
Olanrewaju Kayode was a very popular figure during his time with Austria Wein. The striker turned out to be a good buy for the club in 2014 when he signed from Maccabi Netanya and he had an immediate impact scoring 13 times in 34 appearances in his first season.
Olanrewaju continued his impressive run of form in the 2015/16 season surpassing his goal scoring feat and emerged the top scorer in the Austrian Bundesliga with 17 goals in 33 games. But in the summer of 2017, Olanrewaju joined Manchester City for £4m and was shipped out on loan to newly promoted Girona in the Spanish La Liga Santander where he has failed to sparkle. The current season hasn’t gone too good for Olanrewaju after he failed to score in 12 La Liga games and (13 in all competitions).

6 Super Eagles Stars With Longest 2017 Goal Droughts

4 December 26, 2017 10:46 am

With six days left in 2017 and six months to the 2018 World Cup, Completesportsnigeria.com Johnny Edward presents six Super Eagles players who have the longest goal drought.

Kelechi Iheanacho (Leicester City, England)

Despite being prolific for the Super Eagles in 2017 where he scored four goals in seven games, Kelechi Iheanacho will end 2017 without scoring an English Premier League goal if he fails to score against Watford and Liverpool in the Foxes’ remaining two league fixtures for 2017.
The Nigeria international has made 16 EPL appearances in 2017 (seven for Manchester City and nine appearances for Leicester City so far and has failed to score, though Iheanacho was on target for the Foxes in their Carabao Cup fourth round win against Leeds United.
His last goal in the English Premier League was on the 26th of December 2016 for Manchester City against Hull City at the KCOM Stadium. The 21-year-old forward came on for Nolito in the 57th minute of the encounter to score his fourth goal of that season.

Kayode Olanrewaju (Girona, Spain)

Kayode Olanrewaju has failed to replicate last season’s form with Austria Wein that saw Manchester City shell out €4m for him last summer.
Olanrewaju finished the 2016-17 season in the Austrian Bundesliga with 17 goals in 33 appearances but has failed to get off the mark with Girona where he is currently on a season-long loan deal from Manchester City. He has gone 13 games without a goal in the Spanish La Liga Santander.
This drought is Kayode’s longest ever since he fired blanks in 10 straight games for Maccabi Netanya during the 2012-13 season

Alex Iwobi, (Arsenal, England)

Alex Iwobi has featured in 11 of Arsenal’s 19 English Premier League games this season. He has scored once. The 21 year old’s drought in the English Premier League has extended to eight games while in all competitions this season, Iwobi has gone 15 games without finding the back of the net.

Imoh Ezekiel (Konyaspor, Turkey)

One-cap Nigerian international Imoh Ezekiel joined Konyaspor with the hope of rediscoving his goal-scoring touch but the 23-year-old ended his short stint with the Turkish Super Lig outfit unceremoniously.
The petite forward failed to score in 13 appearances for Konyaspor before terminating his contract at the club this week. The drought is Ezekiel’s longest ever since he came into limelight with Standard Liege in 2013-14 season.

Aaron Samuel (CSKA Moscow, Russia)

Since recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Aaron Samuel has failed to add goals to his games. The Nigerian international who has scored twice in seven games for the Super Eagles has gone nine games without a goal in all competitions for his Russian side.
His only goal this term was against Tosno where he featured for the entire duration of the encounter in August.

Victor Moses (Chelsea, England)

Having been deployed as a wing-back last season, Victor Moses goal returns have diminished. Moses has not scored this season in 13 English Premier League games and 15 in all competitions. Moses’ last goal in the EPL was against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on the 24th of November, 2016.

I wish the writer can tell us the poor form that made Puel drop Iheanacho down the pecking order. Na wa.

10 Players Who Could Miss Super Eagles World Cup Party

33 December 2, 2017 11:26 am

As Nigeria’s preparations for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia continue, some players who have been part of the squad could miss out of the main show next year.

Completesportsnigeria.com’s JOHNNY EDWARD picks out 10 Super Eagles players who could be watching the Russia 2018 World Cup action from their couches next summer if they do not step up their game…

1. AHMED MUSA

Both with the Super Eagles and at club level with Leicester City, Ahmed Musa has lost his place in the first team squad and it will take more than his experience with the Super Eagles and his blistering pace on the flanks to earn him a seat on the flight to Russia with Gernot Rohr’s squad.
Musa has found game time hard to come by at club level and Leicester City’s new manager Claude Puel has even said he does not know what the former CSKA Moscow winger still has a future at the King Power Stadium. The January transfer window will offer Musa a route to seek first team action elsewhere to compete for a place in the Super Eagles star-studded attack for the World Cup.

2. BROWN IDEYE

Since providing that assist for Kelechi Iheanacho to score his first goal in the World Cup qualifier against Zambia in Ndola, Brown Ideye has been on the fringes and is now on the verge of missing out on the World Cup party in Russia.
The Tianjin TEDA striker was sensationally dropped from the preliminary squad for the 2014 World Cup but earned a recall to the team two years later, featuring in three games (against Mali, Luxembourg and Zambia).
Ideye scored four goals in 14 games in the Chinese Super League but his fallout with former coach Lee Lim-Saeng saw him demoted to the reserves where he barely featured. A move back to Europe coupled with some brilliant performances could convince the handlers, who are still in search of a back-up striker for Odion Ighalo, that he (Ideye) deserves a place at least in the preliminary squad.

3. DANIEL AKPEYI

He is considered to be the second choice goalkeeper after Carl Ikeme but Daniel Akpeyi has failed to impress with his performances and also failed to take his chance when called up to man the sticks for the Super Eagles.
The Chippa United goalkeeper may battle with Dele Alampasu and possibly Dele Aiyenugba if invited for the final goalkeeper slot.
Francis Uzoho and Ikechukwu Ezenwa look certain to make the list.

4. UCHE AGBO

The Standard Liege defender has not featured for the Super Eagles since he has been called up to the squad a year ago. That underlines how he is regarded.
Despite featuring regularly in the Belgian Jupiler League, breaking into the first team squad of the national remains a tough task for Agbo and that could ruin his chances ahead of the World Cup.

5. KENNETH OMERUO

The Kasimpasa defender lost his place in the heart of the Super Eagles defence and had not been considered until he was called in as a replacement for the injured Ogenyi Onazi for the last two games.
Omeruo’s performance against Argentina in a 3-5-2 formation was solid. With coach Gernot Rohr already satisfied with the trio of William Troost-Ekong, Leon Balogun and Chidozie Awaziem the battle for the final place for a centre half will be between Agbo and the 2013 African Cup of Nations winner, Omeruo.

6. HENRY ONYEKURU

Despite his rich vein of scoring form for Anderlecht, Henry Onyekuru may be left out of the Super Eagles final squad for the World Cup in Russia.
This is because of the quality of players he is up against in his position.
The 20-year-old will compete with the likes of Victor Moses, Alex Iwobi, Moses Simon, Kelechi Iheanacho, Ahmed Musa, Odion Ighalo, Anthony Nwakaeme and Kayode Olanrewaju for spots in the attack. And with Onyekuru not getting enough playing time to showcase his talent with the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr may not take a gamble on him.

7. KAYODE OLANREWAJU

Since he signed up for Manchester City and was shipped out on loaned to Girona in Spain, Kayode Olanrewaju has failed to hit the ground running in terms of goals in LaLiga.
Olanrewaju has only seen 12 minutes of international action since he made his debut for the Super Eagles in their 2-0 loss to South Africa in a 2019 African Cup of Nations qualifier.
Odion Ighalo is the Eagles first choice striker for the World Cup barring injuries so Olanrewaju still has the likes of Kelechi Iheanacho and Anthony Nwakaeme to contend with.

8. MIKEL AGU

Mikel Agu has made four substitute appearances for the Super Eagles since he made his debut in June against South Africa and has not been convincing in those games. With John Ogu’s performance in the two games against Algeria and Argentina, in that same role, the Bursaspor defensive midfielder’s place in the World Cup squad is under threat.

9. OGHENEKARO ETEBO

Since he shone in Nigeria’s 3-1 win over Algeria in Uyo, Oghenekaro Etebo has struggled to replicate the form that saw him make the headlines.
Etebo possesses a great bursr of pace that can power any midfield but will that be enough to displace his captain, Mikel Obi? No. He got his chance to play himself back into reckoning against Algeria but Etebo looked lost playing in the advanced midfield role.

10. ISAAC SUCCESS

If fit Isaac Success is one forward who would give Odion Ighalo a good fight in the striking role. But the Watford star who has been ruled out until he new year is not likely to make the Super Eagles preliminary squad.

Who Should Spearhead Super Eagles Attack At 2018 World Cup?

November 23, 2017 5:42 pm

The Super Eagles have not been found wanting in attack. At least so far. But there is this feeling that the squad still lacks a prolific pointman who can be relied upon to supply the goals in tight matches against high-quality opposition.

Under Gernot Rohr’s guidance, the Super Eagles have often played the 4-3-3 system with two wide forwards supporting the centre forward.

Rohr played Odion Ighalo, Kelechi Iheanacho, Brown Ideye and Anthony Nwakaeme as the centre forwards in the qualifying campaign for the Russia 2018 World Cup.

Although Nigeria breezed through a supposedly tough qualifying group that contained Cameroon, Algeria and Zambia, none of the strikers scored more than twice. Iheanacho scored two goals, Ighalo scored once, while the others did not get on the scoresheet.

Instead, it was wide forward Victor Moses who scored three goals, while Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi added two each. Even central midfielder Mikel Obi scored twice.

So, should Rohr stick with the strikers he has already used during the qualifiers? Which of them should be the spearhead in Russia? Ighalo? Iheanacho? Nwakaeme?
Or should the likes of Henry Onyekuru, Olanrewaju Kayode, Victor Osimhen and others still be given a shot at leading the Super Eagles attack in Russia? It is time again to have your say as Completesportsnigeria.com continue our Road To Russia World Cup Debate

How Far Can Super Eagles Go At 2018 World Cup?

16 December 5, 2017 6:31 pm

The farthest the Super Eagles have gone since they started qualifying for the World Cup in 1994 has been the round of 16, which they have reached thrice in five outings.

The Nigerian side reached the second round in their debut campaign in 1994 as well as in 1998 and 2014, failing to advance beyond the group stage in 2002 and 2010.

Now, having been placed in Group D of the Russia 2018 World Cup with familiar foes Argentina and debutantes Iceland and star-studded Croatia, what do you feel are the chances of the Super Eagles?
Are the African giants good enough to match their previous achievement? Or can they equal Cameroon, Senegal and Ghana’s World Cup quarter-finals African record? Can Gernot Rohr’s side go even further than the last-eight stage to set a new African record?

Given the strengths and weaknesses of the current Super Eagles squad and their likely route to the latter stages, how far do you predict they can go in Russia?

Does FIFA Ranking Reflect Super Eagles’ World Cup Prospects?

31 December 24, 2017 2:11 pm

The Super Eagles once again dropped in the monthly FIFA world ranking released on Thursday, slipping from 50th in the world to 51st.

Even before the latest ranking, the Nigerian side were already one of the lowest-ranked teams going to the Russia 2018 World Cup, which led to them being in the ‘weakest’ Pot 4 for the draw.

Super Eagles’ position in the ranking makes them not only the lowest-ranked team in their group, but also the lowliest African team going to Russia.

Group D opponents Argentina (No.4 in the world), Croatia (No.17 ) and even Iceland, the country with the lowest population ever to qualify for the World Cup, (No.22), are all well ahead of Nigeria in the ranking.
Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and Senegal are all better than Nigeria, according to the ranking. Senegal, Tunisia, Egypt and Morocco are 23rd, 27th, 31st and 40th in the world respectively.

So, if we go by the ranking, the Super Eagles are supposed to finish last in their group and not perform as well as the other African sides in Russia.

But is it that straightforward? Can the Super Eagles defy FIFA and their ranking and outperform their group opponents and the other African teams?

A lot of Nigerians have condemned FIFA’S ranking but can the Super Eagles rise above it and make the country proud?
Or are you expecting them to perform exactly true to their lowly ranking?

Teams gain points when they win matches but the eagles lose points winning a lot of matches. I don’t get it.

I just hope and pray for SUPER EAGLES’ opponents to take the ranking serious and underate us for them to receive the thrashing of their lives. Eagles will make mince meat of that obnoxious FIFA rankings when the chips are down.

Uche okafor- ashdod- out
Uche okechukwu -fernebache-out
Efan Ekoku -norwich city-out
Emeka Ezuego -fremad amager- out
Thompson Oliha -no club- out
Victor Ikpeba (not a regular at Monaco then) out
grin

Hehehehehej .... Yeye dey smell grin

Igbonu Admits It’s Will Be Difficult To Break Into Rohr’s Super Eagles

1 December 23, 2017 9:25 am

By Johnny Edward: FC Ufa forward, Slyvester Igbonu, has told

Completesportsnigeria. com that his breaking into the Super Eagles ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia will be a herculean task.
Igbonu last featured for Nigeria in 2015 under former coach , Sunday Oliseh.

Igbonu told Completesportsnigeria.com in an interview in Lagos on Friday that the current Super Eagles players are very talented and have worked hard under Gernot Rohr to achieve good results.

“There are good players in the team playing well and fact is that they are getting results which makes it difficult for any player getting into the squad,” Igbonu told Completesportsnigeria.com.

“Their performance in the last game (Vs Argentina) took everyone by surprise because of the way they were set out in a different formation.

“I’m doing well in Russia and it will be a dream come true if I get another chance, and if not I will continue to enjoy my football at FC Ufa”

He has scored seven goals in 14 games for FC UFA in all competition this season.

COMEBACK KIDS:
5 Players Who Could Crash Super Eagles World Cup Party.

The 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia may still be six months away, but Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr will already be looking for potential members of his 23-man squad.

Completesportsnigeria.com ‘s JAMES AGBEREBI wonders if these FIVE experienced players could work their way back into the Super Eagles squad in time for next year’s showpiece…

VINCENT ENYEAMA

Vincent Enyeama, 35, retired from international football after falling out with former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh in 2015, but there have been serious calls for the goalkeeper to return for the 2018 World Cup.
In his absence, Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Carl Ikeme took over and impressed with his performances.
Unfortunately, all the talk of finally finding a reliable goalkeeper was shattered after Ikeme was diagnosed with acute leukemia in July this year.
Ikeme’s unfortunate illness led to the emergence of the likes of Ikechukwu Ezenwa and Daniel Akpeyi who have failed to impress, which has led to clamours in some quarters for Enyeama’s return to the Eagles.
And after over seven months out due to injury, Enyeama made a return to action for the first time for Lille’s U-18s in their 3-1 win over Croix in the French fourth tier last Saturday.

OBAFEMI MARTINS

Obafemi Martins’ last game for the Super Eagles was coming on as a 74th minute substitute for Ahmed Musa in the Super Eagles’ 2-0 home win against Swaziland in the second leg, second 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in November 15, 2015.
Since then he has not been considered for invitation by the Super Eagles coaching crew.
But back in his Chinese Super League club, Shanghai Shenshua, Martins was impressive as he scored seven goals in 13 league appearances last season.
And in the 2017 Chinese FA Cup final against Shaghai SIPG, 33-year-old Martins was instrumental as the club clinched their fourth cup win.
He scored a goal each in both legs of the Cup final which ended 3-3 on aggregate (Shanghai Shenhua won the first leg 1-0 and lost the reverse fixture 3-2).
Also, Martins was the highest goal scorer of this year’s Chinese FA Cup with six goals.

BARTHOLOMEW OGBECHE

Bartholomew Ogbeche made his debut for the Super Eagles in a 1-1 friendly game against Paraguay en route to the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
The highlight of the friendly against Paraguay was Ogbeche’s spectacular bicycle kick which cemented his place in the squad for the World Cup.
Unfortunately, Ogbeche could not replicate his pre-World Cup performances as the Eagles crashed out in the group stage.
Ogbeche played for the Eagles up to 2004 but has been in international wilderness since then.
But there is a possibility that Ogbeche, now 33, could make a remarkable return due to his impressive goal scoring run in the Dutch top flight with Willem II Tilburg.
He has scored eight goals in seven league games this season and currently lies joint third in the Eredivisie top scorers chart, just two goals adrift of the top scorer.

EFE AMBROSE

Since departing Scottish champions Celtic for Hibernian in the summer of 2017, Efe Ambrose has become like a player reborn as he is currently enjoying his football.
Ambrose, 29, is ever present in the Hibernian team as he has played in all of their 18 league games this season.
He scored his first league goal of the season against his former club Celtic, starting the comeback in the game which saw Hibernian come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.
As reward of his impressive performances for Hibernian so far this season, on Tuesday, Ambrose was included in the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) Team of the
Week.

SONE ALUKo

After impressing for Fulham in just one season, Sone Aluko moved to fellow Championship club Reading in the summer of 2017 and has continued from where he left off with the London club.

He has made 16 appearances out of Reading’s 21 English second-tier games so far this season, scoring two goals from his midfield position.

Aluko, 28, made his Super Eagles debut in 2009 in a 1-1 friendly draw against Republic of Ireland.

His last appearance for the Eagles was against South Africa in a 2015 AFCON qualifier in 2014 which ended 2-2 in Uyo.
Aluko scored the Eagles’ two goals but it was not enough to secure qualification for the Eagles.

Featuring regularly and impressing for Reading week in, week out could see Aluko get a surprise recall to the Super Eagles ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Ogbeche: I Dream Of Playing For Nigeria At World Cup Again

39 December 9, 2017 2:01 pm

Willem II Tilburg’s Nigerian striker Bartholomew Ogbeche is hopeful his new goalscoring form in the Dutch Eredivise this season can earn him a recall to the Super Eagles ahead of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Ogbeche, 33, was a surprise inclusion in the Super Eagles’ 2002 World Cup squad where he played in the team’s opening two games against Argentina and Sweden. He last played for Nigeria in an African Nations Cup qualifier against Gabon in Libreville in 2004. He scored once in six games.

Ogbeche took his league tally to an impressive seven goals in six games this season after he scored in Willem II Tilburg’s 1-1 draw at home to NAC Breda on Friday.
The goal also saw Ogbeche become the second player in the history of the club to score in four consecutive Eredivisie games. Samuel Armenteros first achieved the feat during the 2014/15 season.

“I dream of to play for my country at the World Cup. I’m scoring again and I am sharp again,” Ogbeche told Fox Sports Netherlands.

“There’s still more time to prove that before the World Cup.”
“I was at the right place at the right time during the game and I was unlucky not to have scored a second.”

The draw means Willem II remain 14th with 15 points from 15 games, one point above NAC Breda.
