Do not be evasive. Tell us your stat, that might inspire someone here.

PHUMEELAYO:
I can't really comment on the specifics of the test, there's a voice prompt at the beginning where you have to swear an oath not to divulge any info about the nature of the test.

Well the verbal section wasn't easy at all but English has always been a strong point for me (got a 9 on my IELTS). I attended to the reasoning questions and then the reading comprehension. The passages were longer and more complex than I expected for just a few questions.

I was in luck with the Quant section but time wasn't on anyone's side. The main strategy I used was answering the easy questions within the first 10mins, just skipping all the hard ones and using the remainder time to tackle them.

MLDrima please don't feel bad. If I tell you what I scored doing the GRE twice then you would really praise yourself. The best of my two scores were not anywhere near yours. You can imagine that.

I noticed the group is dying already because its purpose has been defeated. Most eminent contributors like scholastica 16 and others are being reticent because of the evasiveness and covertness of we the new set. If I have not forgotten, people would post test experiences, results and even advice prospective test takers, an habit that is now moribund. I will suggest "Pming" should stop for now or else if only the need calls for it and all information should be post directly on the thread. I will also suggest that everyone should post their stats so as to know who to direct a particular question to, if you support this motion, like this post and if you do not, just click on share.

I'm sorry I don't really see it that way super small. Yes its good to post scores for people to learn but when the scores are not good, one feels depressed. I've been there twice and I know how it feels. I believe it takes quite a while depending on one's emotional strength to get over such low score and move on. GRE doesn't even wait after the exam. You will get your result there, as in hot hot. Well its an experience I believe we can conquer when properly armed.

Please to those who didn't do well cheer up. Don't feel bad. You can always better your best,...yes your best! Why because at every point you sit for an exam understand you've done the best preparation you can. You might have failed to achieve a desired score but don't give up. I believe I can do better just as super small says.

Impossible is nothing!

Well said, but I believe we that just wrote learnt from some people's experiences, posting some of our flaws might help someone else prepare better.

After seeing my test scores, I just made up my mind not share anything, cos I was heartbroken, but supersmall just moved me to just say my little piece.

I had been following the thread around February last year, got all the materials I used here, the Google Drive links, etc.

So I think I shot my self in the leg by not giving verbal adequate attention.

My Score

V: 141

UG GPA: 3.81/5 (wes unofficial 3.34)
Toefl: registering asap

It happens like that. Sorry about your experience. The thing about success is it never comes easy. When I did my own GRE, I had to resign from work. People saw me as crazy. Many at times people come here and post success stories and all but they don't go deep into the sacrifices they made to make it happen.

I understand also that writing the test again needs a lot of pshycing up. Many people write the test and they have significant improvements but only when they are able to learn from their flaws and develop on them.

Nothing good comes easy. Please restrategize and re-fire. I believe you should be able to ace the TOEFL.

Best of luck

Very true. If not for this thread, I would still be working my shitty job and wouldn't have known exactly what to do.
No one is really saying anything any longer. No experiences and all. At least, I came back to state my experience and what worked for me.

It would be selfish of you to take from here and not give back. Even if it's a word or two, it can go a long way in helping someone else.

Let's put more life please.

MLDrima:
I have taken my GRE, but my result isn't encouraging. Sincerely I don't have anything to say to prospective test takers. everything have been said here, you just have to use your prepping time wisely, know your weaknesses and address them before the test day and take as many full length practice as you can.

With my score am now confused on the way forward. I don't want to spend the little money I have saved applying to schools and get rejected at last, better I use the money to register for another GRE. But that will lead my application to next year. something that I don't want. But if that is the wise thing to do. then I have no choice I will go for it.

My profile is:

Q-158
V- 150

Cgpa- 4.21/5.0
Undergraduate: PE

TOEFL: coming up 03 February

Applying for: PE, M Sc

Considering my score, I have sent the score to the following schools:

University of Houston
LSU
Missouri US&T
University of Louisiana Lafayette

Cc:
Scholastics 16

Happy day

Your advice will strongly be appreciated.

I feel your pain bro. This is one of the reason I'm not applying for Fall 2018 but Spring 2019. I know getting a well written recommendation within the next 3 weeks from any Nigerian lecturer talk less of Prof is a daunting task.

If you are living in the university town you graduated from then go to those lecturers with your laptop and modem. You could even prepare a sample of the recommendation letter yourself and politely show it to them to make the whole thing quick and less-frustrating.
This seems to be the best approach... Meanwhile, my main ref who is a foreign educated prof doesn't take time to complete his recommendations. I submitted application on a Friday, by Sunday he's completed it and even called me. Meanwhile I didn't even inform him. But the others, I've sent reminders, several calls and messages. And they will always promise, tomorrow, when I get home, when I get to the faculty... Lol. Later, excuses, busy, no light, etc... Na God go help me o.

Took the GRE on 4th January. I couldn't afford to quit my job so I had to manage.I work everday and weekends(Saturday and Sunday). So it was really tasking to prepare and write the GRE. My prep was done in snatches;in Lagos yellow buses, during lunch breaks,in between work lulls etc. Took 1st to 3rd January off to cram in as much work as possible. All of my work was Quant focused.
Test day was ok. The 3+ hours didn't affect me since all my exams in the university lasted for at least 3 hours. After this long story,my scores were:
Q- 157
V- 158
GPA- 4.67/5 (Pharmacy)
Prospective course of study- Biotechnology,Genetic engineering-Still haven't decided yet.
I am a bit disappointed with the verbal score because I scored as high as 164 in my Powerprep test (Didn't prep for verbal though since English has always been my forte)but slightly elated with the Q score as my cold diagnostic was a mere 144.I'm thinking of taking two weeks off and rewriting since I know I can easily smash the 325 mark with focused prep. To all prospective test writers, u can do it!

Oh.... I'm sorry. I got a 314, V165 Q149 (was surprised at this score; never been good with math exams). Though I'm still trying to understand how knowing my score helps anyone.

I already talked about my study schedule and the simple strategies I applied on test day.

I don't think an overall score of 308 is bad. Although, clocking 161 (roughly 80th percentile) in Quants would have bolstered your chances of admit.

I would advice you to apply but focus on making your SOP top-notch. You need to make the first paragraph catchy and captivating to the adcom. Another aspect is your referee but I can not guarantee you would get a very powerful recommendation from a Nigerian lecturer/professor. They just don't seem to be effusive and specific in their assessment. A bland recommendation would further reduce your chances. I would suggest you google up the specific requirement for reference for each school. Some schools honour reference letters from your boss at work (professional) or a mentor that can vouch about your ability to excel in graduate studies.

Also, if you haven't published any paper before please do, it speaks volume about your research experience. I have no idea how rich your esearch experience is. If you have any relevant work or research experience just focus on it in ur SOP and CV.

Lastly, take time to work on your CV. You can google sample of academic CV. Don't forget to include relevant research experience under its section as well as extracurricular activities.

If you haven't contacted POI then start right away. Send them a short introductory mail and an an attachment of your application materials. Merge all your documents into a single PDF file and your name_M.sc docs as title.

Why not apply for M.sc/PhD route. It's far more difficult getting funding for M.Sc than PhD especially in Houston. They have intimidating admission requirement for Environmental Engineering so I can imagine that of PE. I wish you all the best.

Thank you sir for the encouragement and wonderful advice.

I will go ahead and apply and will try to make my SOP a top notch that will supplement my weak points. I will also put on my best on the CV, though I don't have any experience. I just graduated last year.

Publishing a paper will be difficult for me now due to time constraints. but I will look into it, possibly my final year thesis.

I have started sorting out some faculty members with same research interest as mine. I want to look at their published papers before contacting them. I just hope there is no problem in contacting more than one within the same department at same time?

As for M Sc/PhD route, the truth is am not set for it now. I am not sure whether I can endure the PhD stress.
thanks once again

I studied intensively for a month (8hrs/day). Made use of Manhattan series and Gruber and the free powerprep.
The test itself was surprisingly easy but I had a hard time with time, especially with the Quant section. But all in all, it turned out good.

Its good to know it came out good. However, we'll appreciate if you give us the full detail about your experience before and during the test and perhaps the score. Albeit you are entitled to your opinion, thats the norm, its how we roll here and it has kept us and the thread united. Irrespective of the score, the house gonna learn from it. 315 to 325, that's 10 point jump in 2 weeks, I'll hope not using the same materials and you already know your weak points, on the hand I'll advise you use your score well because you have a competitive GPA and high percentile on both V and Q start your applications sir, there's literally no time left for '' roborebe'', if you want to retake I'll advise you wait for your diagnostic score, work on your weak areas and take at least a month to prep

Life is not a bed of roses.

At some point we need to come to a realization of the need to "embrace" failure.

In my weird opinion, I'd even think failure teaches more life lessons than success.
