Southampton Premier League Debutant Commits International Future To Nigeria

Southampton's new kid on the block Michael Obafemi has committed his international future at senior level to Nigeria ahead of his country of birth, Republic of Ireland, allnigeriasoccer.com can exclusively report.

The 17-year-old had been on the radar of Nigeria's national team coaches and the Nigerian Federation even before he made his Premier League debut in the Saints' 1-1 draw vs Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, January 21.

Obafemi was one of the best players for Team Nigeria UK when they lost to a Golden Eaglets squad parading the likes of Kelechi Nwakali and Victor Osimhen in a pre-World Cup friendly in June 2015.

Coach Emmanuel Amuneke was pleased with his performance and had mulled over the possibility of adding him to the roster but the striker had to return to England.

''He traveled with us to Abuja, he was the best player for Team Nigeria UK. Just last week, we got a call from his mother that he wants to change, he wants to play for Nigeria not Ireland,'' a top source told allnigeriasoccer.com.

''He has been scoring goals regularly for Southampton U18s, we brought him to Nigeria when he was with Leyton Orient, he's a fantastic player.''

Obafemi, who has caps for Republic of Ireland U19s, has scored 12 goals for Southampton U18s this season.

You just shifted your point. You were initially insinuating that he he'd automatically be in Russia.

I'm not opposing that he wouldn't be called up for the friendlies as you said. If he features in the friendlies, then he's practically fighting for a goddamn place. That's where I was coming from.

Just continue.

I don't have concern with an inexperience attack. But I don't joke with an experienced defence.

It is not even as if the present goalkeepers are first choice in their respective clubs. I don't understand the fuss around a potential return for vincent.

Based on experience, Claudio Bravo is a far better goalkeeper than Ederson, winning multiple titles with Colo Colo, Barcelona, Back to back Copa America with Chile.

However, with reality on ground, there is no comparison. Ederson is better.

Is Moses an AMF?

If you fail to attack by creating chances for the forwards you are exposing your defence, and when an AMF fails in his duties the DMF and CMF will be the ones to suffer it.

Why do u think our team usually have problems with creating chances and scoring whenever Mikel is absent?

FAI face competition from Nigeria for underage Ireland star after Premier League debut at just 17

THE FAI are facing competition from Nigeria for the international allegiances of Michael Obafemi, who made his Premier League debut for Southampton yesterday.
Still only 17, the striker’s exploits in the Saints youth team earned him a place on the bench against Tottenham and he almost scored the winner during the 10 minutes he got on the pitch.
With the game deadlocked at 1-1, Mauricio Pellegrino threw the rookie on and he came within inches of turning a cross home but for once his prolific finishing touch deserted him.

Obafemi was born in Ireland to Nigerian parents before relocating to England at a young age. He spent his formative years at Leyton Orient before being snapped up by the Saints.
Having been spotted by the FAI’s London-based scout Mark O’Toole, he declared for Ireland last year and was called into the U-18 squad for the Slovakia Cup. His debut, though, didn’t come until September when he played twice for the Under-19s in their first phase UEFA qualifiers in Waterford.

The next phase of the qualifiers take place in Portugal during March but, should his ascent continue, Obafemi may be fast-tracked into the U-21 squad for their Euro qualifier against Azerbaijan in the same week or even the senior training camp in Turkey.
Nigeria will have other ideas. In contrast to Ireland, they have qualified for the World Cup and will be eager to pitch themselves to a Premier League newcomer.

Another player eligible for both nations, Limerick’s in-demand striker Chiedozie Ogbene, has indicated he will declare for the Golden Eagles.
"It’s a special feeling as I have dreamed of this since I was a kid," said Obafemi following yesterday’s bow, which made him the second youngest player after Luke Shaw to make his top-flight debut for the Saints.

"I’m just thankful to the club and all the staff that made it happen.
"I came into training on Saturday believing I would be playing for the under-18s. The manager stopped me and said that I would be training instead and would maybe be in the first-team squad.

"When the chance came, I should have used my left foot but I hope I will get another opportunity to prove I can make it at this level.
"I was nervous but the welcome from the supporters was brilliant and the senior guys told me to just relax and prove myself. I want to move on from here and keep working hard.

"I can’t stop here, this is just the beginning

2018 World Cup: Ghana should have bribed referees - GFA member

Vice-Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, Wilfred Kweku Osei “Palmer”, has suggested that Ghana would have qualified for the Russia 2018 World Cup if money was made available to pay unclassified and indemnity payments to referees.

A Commission of Inquiry set up in 2014 after the shambolic showing in the World Cup that year revealed the country spent approximately $700,000 on unclassified payments and subsequently recommended such payments be scrapped.

While the government whitepaper issued on the findings rejected the recommendation, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has since ceased allocating money for such purpose.

Speaking on Citi FM’s Sports Panorama show on Friday night, Wilfried Kweku Osei, a Ghana Football Association Executive Committee member, believes the unavailability of budgetary allocation to cater for referees is the reason the country missed out on a 4th successive World Cup appearance.

“I was quite surprised that Ghanaians and the media sided with former Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye [about not budgeting for indemnities] when the government whitepaper on the Dzamefe Commission report clearly indicated that unclassified payments were legal in the concept of our budget.

“If we had spent around $300,000 dollars [on referees], and stood to benefit about $8 million [by appearing at the World Cup], I see nothing wrong with it,” he said.

When pressed on why such an amount of money should be spent on referees, Kwaku Osei clarified that the essence of the payment to the referees is to ensure fairness.

“When we say unclassified payments, it’s not necessarily giving money directly to the referee. It can be in kind, it can be in cash. The essence of it is not for the referee to be biased towards your opponent.

“But if that was a necessary concomitant to create convenient atmosphere for the referee to be fair-minded in the course of the game, then I see nothing wrong with it,” he added.

Kwaku Osei, owner of Ghana Premier League side Tema Youth which is currently fighting a battle to escape relegation from Ghana’s top division, went on to suggest Egypt and Uganda could have influenced referees’ decisions to disallow goals scored by Ghana in games against Congo and Uganda.

“Are you telling me the first goal Ghana scored against Congo in Kumasi was a bad goal? But the referee disallowed it. Do you know what motivated him to do that? “It clearly points to the fact that he was being influenced by an invisible force. That could be Egypt; that could be Uganda or any of the countries we were competing against,” he said.

“When we went to Uganda, you saw clearly that the push on Frank Acheampong was a penalty. The first goal Amartey scored was a clean goal, the last goal Dwamena scored that was disallowed was a clean goal. So we’re not asking for anything beyond the referee being fair,” he concluded.

The Black Stars failed to qualify for Russia 2018 after winning just one game in their four qualifying matches. They host Egypt, who qualified from Ghana’s group, on November 12, 2017 in Kumasi.

Its like Ghanaians have strong affinity for match fixing.

That Ghanaian ref that got banned for match fixing in the SA vs Senegal game also comes to mind.

Rather than developing their football they are thinking of bribing referees.

Pinnick offers Oruma job in national team
EMMANUEL OKOGBA
22 JAN 2018
By Tony Ubani

Distressed former Super Eagles midfielder, Wilson Oruma who has been battling emotional disorder after being defrauded N2 billion by fake oil businessmen has been offered a job as assistant coach in one of the national teams.

The cheery news was given by the President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Melvin Amaju Pinnick who has picked all the former Nigeria international’s hospital bills and relocated him to a better equipped one.

‘’By next week, Oruma will move into my house before they finish furnishing the three bedroom flat where he would stay’’, the NFF President confirmed to us.

His story is a pathetic one and we cannot allow him to die. I am rendering this help to him from one Warri man to another. We are Warri Ambassadors’’.

Pinnick said that the former Golden Eaglets’ 1993 FIFA U-17 World Cup winning captain was recovering well. ‘’All we need to do is to show him love. I ate with him. He’s stable. The NFF will include him to play a role in our award ceremony coming up soon.

Thereafter, we’ll include him in the U-20 national team. Come June, we’ll also include him in the contingent to Russia to cheer the Super Eagles’’. I’m still talking with some of the clubs he played for to allow him come and do a coaching course with them’’.

Pinnick’s personal Foundation are footing the bills for his rehabilitation.

Oruma featured for Nigeria’s U-17, U-23 and the senior national team, winning the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 1993, the Olympic gold in 1996 and two bronze medals at the African Cup of Nations in 2002 and 2006.

At club level, he starred for RC Lens, Nancy, Samsunspor, Nimes, Servette, Sochaux, Marseille and Guingamp, and Kavala FC of Greece before he retired on November 26, 2010.

The NFF President who led members of his exco in another landmark agreement with WAPIC Insurance prayed that Super Eagles players could maximise the benefits of having WAPIC to have a better future through proper pension fund. ‘’

On the World Cup preparation, Amaju showered praises on Sports Minister Dalung and the Federal Government for their massive support and creating an enabling environment for football stability and prosperity in Nigeria.
