World Cup: Ministry, NFF should work together, says Balogun A renowned sport analyst, Tayo Balogun, on Thursday urged the Federal Ministry of Sports and Nigeria Football Federation to work together to ensure successful outing for the Super Eagles at the World Cup. Balogun told newsmen in Ibadan on telephone from his base in the U.S. that the synergy was necessary for a strong outing in Russia. “I’m agitating for a good cordial synergy between both parties because they have to be on the same page at all times. “The preparations should be on both the players and of Nigeria’s participation regarding spectators. “Aside the mapped out friendly matches for the Super Eagles, machineries should also be in place to have as many supporters there as possible. “Plans should be made for flags and Jerseys to be provided for Nigeria’s supporters in Russia. This will serve as morale boosters for the players. “I am sure there are several Nigerians resident in Russia and plans should be made ahead to coordinate their support for the Super Eagles,” he said. Balogun told pressmen that Nigeria should also take advantage of Mikel Obi’s wife who happened to be a Russian citizen, to court the support of Russian fans. “Our captain is married to a Russian and that would aid in us getting some support from Russians. “This will help in getting some form of empathy from Russians and we should build up on that. “Russians would know that Nigeria has some kind of tie with them and that will pull some crowd for us,” he said. goldfish80: "In not so distant past" you said. In not so distant past that Oliseh would rather play a Paul Onobi and bench Mikel Obi. That same not distant past that Oliseh would rather force a Silvester Igboun on us rather than play Sonne Aluko, that Gbolahan Salami was our best striker. Keshi keeping slots for home based players whether they merited it or not. Keshi, Oliseh and Siasia's team selections finished us. "My boys, My boys" sentiments. That is gone now. Rohr is in charge. No home based sentiments. Only the best will be invited irrespective of whether you are home based or foreign based. On beating Libya home away, football is no mathematics. 1 Like |

BascoVanVeli: He was at VVV Venlo up till the summer of 2013 where he scored 8 senior goals in his penultimate season before being loaned to Heerenveen in the 2013-2014 season. A player that scored a brace in 2013 in only his second game. Anthony Ujah who is being tagged today as having a better stat than him never scored a single goal in his 7 appearances for the Super Eagles. Brown Ideye and Anthony Ujah flopped big time at the Confed Cup held in that same 2013. There came a young forward in Uche Nwofor and he scored a brace in the Nelson Mandela Challenge in only his second game for Nigeria and you say that is not enough to keep him in the team? With strikers like Ideye, Ujah and Eneramo out of favor Nwofor making the team to the World Cup was not out of place. |

goldfish80: CHAN is not a useful tournament. Local players are exposed at under 17, under 20 and under 23 level. We are the only confederation with tournaments for home based and foreign based players. 2 Likes |

For many countries, their best players rarely leave their country. Afcon is already a mix of foreign and local players, often the best local players . 1 Like |

Icon4s: My point is that he scored zero senior goals at Heerenveen which was prior to the world cup, so how can u compare him to Iheanacho's situation? If this was any other player who scored a brace in a novelty match against SA u would call him a flash in the pan, so what make Nwofor special? Don't forget Sunday Mba helped us lift the nations cup and didn't make the wc team. |

tbaba1234: If the clubs play their cards right there will be a boost in transfer fees, stadium patronage and memorabilia purchase. Football is a business and the fact is that CHAN is an advertisement for all these league. |

BascoVanVeli: If a local player performs well in the under 20 WC, it will do far more for the club than CHAN. Some of our players have reached the age where they are not going abroad again. |

Icon4s:Sir i thought Keshi was a bribery laden coach but on Nwofor situation he didn't take bribe like he took in the case of Uchebo and others or what do you think. I remeber a moniker was telling us Keshi was doing it to have something to fall on during retirement and you thumb him up but on Nwofor the same Keshi did well. |

BascoVanVeli: He earned his call up from his performances in VVV Venlo. Just like Iheanacho earned his call up from his performances at City. I am bringing Iheanacho into the equation as just like the argument of some other players having better stats at their respective clubs than Nwofor so also are some other players currently having better stats than Iheanacho yet he is a favorite to make it to the World Cup. The Nelson Mandela Challenge is never a mere Novelty game. It was like a cup final in terms of expectations and intensity of the game. Infact it was a final. And yes Uche Nwofor ended up being a flash in the pan. That still underlines the fact that most junior internationals never leave up to their expectations. Please watch the video highlights of that game and tell me such quality should have been ignored for misfiring Ujah, Ideye and Eneramo. For the John Ogu fans watch as he displayed his usual trade marks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRSMfsf0cPc 1 Like |

Kog45: He was talking about the 7 home based players slot. Rumors had it that Keshi struck a deal with those players so as to get a share from their transfer fees when the money bags start coming. Which was why he kept fielding them to raise their market values. I was not referring to him taking bribes from Uchebo, Nwofor or anybody. |

tbaba1234: You are even going far. AYC sef. It was their performances at the AYC that saw Uche Nwofor and Okechukwu Uchebo move to Europe from Enugu Rangers. Same goes for Chidi Osuchukwu. |

tbaba1234: Because of the peculiar nature of the African game and the need to develop leagues across the continent. If the concept was lost on FIFA, they wouldn't have awarded the tournament with a 3 points coefficient. |
Re: "The Super Eagles Thread: The Road To AFCON 2025 And 2026 World Cup by goldfish80(m): 5:53pm On Jan 25, 2018 |
tbaba1234: It is not a must everyone should play abroad. If Caf can develop the African game, players from other continents will play in Africa. Now I understand the problem, you think Chan is about harvesting players to man pim.p to European clubs. Well the long term vision of the tournament is to develop African leagues. I am very much at home with the idea. |

Icon4s: The irony is not lost on me that you think home based cannot be good enough, even with your political statement at the bolded. I mean, you won't even entertain the idea that Orji should be called up irrespective of Balogun's form. The game should be about equity and fair play. This is clearly not the case. |

I hope this umar sadiq move to NAC loan move goes through. Only if he started the season with a team that would give him game time, it's not to late to make the World Cup. I believe wholeheartedly that with regular game time and goals this boy can fight for a starting position, he definitely is better than nwakeme and Aaron Samuel. One of our most gifted young strikers top 3. People need to stop judging him based on Olympics performances, not that he disappointed, infact he did very well for his age. I really couldn't get the hype and desperation to get Tammy, when we had an umar sodiq. 4 Likes |

Danielnino00: I wanted to kick against this, but when I tried to see who among the female national team handlers to recommend and remembered how we have been failing woefully at the most recent World women's championships I just thought we should give this a trial. However, we can attach either of Eucharia Uche, Florence Omagbemi or Mercy Akhide to work as chief choach, just like the Rohr - Salisu kinda arrangement. But also I hope they have enough finance to fund this? The women games are not as frequent as those of the men. The last time the Falcons played was the 2016 AWC. Can they keep a foreign coach and pay him for that long a period without engagements? 1 Like |
