There should have been a quotation, without a quotation the sentence was wrong.
And it looked more like he was talking about the young man's career and not the an "airplane carrier "

The truth; Miracle's poem was awful but we can forgive him since he has elevated views of nature.
You're right, he's a pilot not a poet so no big deal if his prose is not in sync, but please don' call it 'very good'.
