Mine happened on a Friday sometime in November, 2008. We were to go for a burial of an uncle to one of our friends when there was crisis in Jos and the burial could not take place. My friend and I decided to go for stroll in his Beettle Volkswagen since the burial was postponed. We went far away from home towards one primary school. While on our way, my friend decided to pull over. On doing that, he said "come and drive." I immediately started shivering as if i was beaten by rain. I left the passenger side and mounted the steering not knowing what to do next. He gave me a few instructions and allowed me. Lo and behold, that was it! I drove til we arrived the primary school. It was there I was taught how to reverse, park, etc. A few days later, I was able to drive on the streets in our area (not major roads oh). I continued for atleast two months albeit not consecutively. Since then, I have not driven a car up til now. But I still know where the Brake, clutch and acelerator are. I still believe I can "move" not "drive" a car because I am not familiar with road signs talk less of mastering the steering. With time, I will go back to where I stopped and continue with my training and perfect it.

O my God! I can remember that time when I used to pack at Ajah U-turn and ask anyone that I find on the road, "Please help me turn this thing to the other side"

Mine was a disaster! I was screaming as i held the steering, scattered my legs everywhere. I closed my eyes at a point and the next thing i heard was a loud noise! I hit a pole. I got arrested that day though. It wasn't funny, so pls don't laugh. Lol.

My 1st move was a reverse, i was 16yrs then...i had a mechanic friend opposite my house, so i got everything before stepping in, i didnt even know the owner of the car, it was a Galant, he just gave me the keys and sat beside me.....up till now i have never bash a car

When I eventually had it,[b][/b] I registered at the driving school and on my 1st day, the instructor claimed I must have been driving before then which in response I told him I know how to drive with my mouth. After the third class, I chose to try driving myself so I took excuse from my boss to go to the dentist and be absent from work. When I got back home, I took my key and drove off into the highway. On coming back home, I heard a sound so I went to check what happened to my car. I got back into the car and continued driving however, I forgot to use my seatbelt. While on the bridge and descending into my area, someone shouted "Road Safety" and immediately I lost control because I was trying to fix my seatbelt. I was stopped by the officer and he asked why I had no one with me and yet had the learning permit attached to my car. He said he was going to charge me N52k but thank God a senior staff drove past and saw me. He came back, beckoned on me, ask why I wasn't at work and what happened. He eventually bailed me because he is a spy police and I ended paying no dime.

My experience was scary, my aunty's driver was on fuel queue and have to go pick my nephew from Corona school ikoyi, d driver called me and ask if i can drive d oda car 505 peugeot to d filling station as he doesn't want to leave the queue dat was the era of fuel scarcity. I hopped into d car (i normally watch wot the driver do when i go out with him) as i reverse d car my leg on clutch was shaking and d car jacked and stopped, i came down push d car to reverse till i can move foward. I engaged gear 1 and hit the road straight to the school! O boy see cursing frm motorists and okada as i was firing the car and d engine was reving when the engine noise is too much i will clutch and break and continue firing, i was scared of changing gear bc i will lose concentration, luckily for me as i was approaching corona school gate the driver called me, i cleared and told him i was in d school, the man shouted! he said i should not move again, na so i dey inside d motor dey sweat like xmas goat till he came with d oda car and curse me till we reach house after packing d car in d school and later came back to pick the car.

I remember that time like it was yesterday. I was like 15 in drivers ed, And I almost drove the car to a pole. You should have seen the instructors face, he looked like he just pooped on himself . That was the day i started fearing God o.

Mine was in University. Imagine upon my dad's 3 cars, he never allowed us to even warm them. Rubbish! Stingy old man.

After exams my friend Fola got his dad's golf from home so that we could cruise around town. Na so my body begin shake cos I wanted to drive. He asked me if I could drive, and like a boss I told him that I had been driving for years. Na so he give me key and we begin dey drive around school. Oh boy, my hand wasn't straight and I was driving all over the road. We reached a bend and instead of me to march break, na so I march accelerator and I almost killed some passers-by. He quickly pulled up the handbrake and the car jerked to a stop. See fear in our eyes that day. Long story short, we ended up in a gutter when I was trying to avoid another car. Thankfully some students help us to jack the car out of the gutter. My friend later asked me if I had ever driven in my life and I had to confess that I had only warmed a car once in my life.

^^^^lol! I started driving even before i went to the Uni and the third and final learning experience was on my bros wedding day, i picked up his car at the church venue to get my shoes which i forgot at home.
The drive home was pretty smooth but on my way back to church which was at St Agnes Maryland. Oh boy na war. Na so the Danfos dey bash be for front and back.
In short, i wrecked his car that day and later denied when h€ discovered all the scratches on it.

bolseas: @Emperoh, I still dont know how to drive o. I have a golf III, but cant drive it. it is my younger brother who drives it and if he is not around, the car remains parked till he comes back. I have learnt how to drive with about 3 cars but still dont know how to. as they are explaining to me, it will enter the right ear and flies out through the left ear. May God help me.

Just try and develop the interest and have the mindset that the worst is that you would dent the car afterall, it is yours and I bet you, you would learn it faster. You can also drive on a less busy road maybe during breaks when traffics are less.

One of the things that gave me courage was a boss who told me he learnt driving for just 45minutes and then drove into the highway so since then I usually had it in mind I can drive since I knew all the theories of driving.

I went through a driving school and i was 17 then, i remember driving the dummy car (an old immobile volkswagen) just to learn how the gear, stearing and mirrors work, i was so gud at it, the ma'am graded me excelent! den i hit the road, unluckily for me the road instructor na ex millitary man. Na so the man they shout my name 'Udoka tuuuurrrrn, then returrrrrn! Bloody weakling!! Tuuurrrrn! I nearly passed out! At a point i was shaking at all parts of my body my eyes inclusive till i heard GBIM!!, i don jam plantain tree for road side!

Nice thread, remember when I began to learn and I had a nosy friend, I started the nissan stanza in our neighbor's house. the car was parked close to the fence that separated both houses, my nosy friend then said I was not clutching down, when I actually was,(twas my 2nd lesson and he was a spectator at my 1st lesson) so I obeyed him and the car flew forward almost into the fence, thank goodness i actually did what I was doing earlier by stepping down on the clutch and hitting the brakes, or else I would have entered our compound without using the gates, I reversed the car back to position sha, but my funniest experience was at the driving school, field lessons were okay, but I had issues with fully returning the steering wheel and my tutor was not so observant(in hindsight) so the day i took to the road for final lesson,my driving was okay, except where on my last turn I almost climbed the kerb by not fulling returning the steering wheel, was so embarrassing.

Wow. Mine was really uneventful. Nowadays,its much easy to learn and people are too lazy to experience the jerking effects of manual cars. Oh,the good ol days when the car would jerk and passersby would all scream "LEARNER". How I hated to use the learner's tag.

ROTFWL. U don't need to worry about ur english cos that kind of experience could have formatted ur brain.

I was 15, my dad took me out one bright Benin Sunday in the 504 station wagon, drove over to the Airport (which was all bushy back in the day), showed me the fundamentals, and then we switched places, and off we went! Had trouble with mastering the equilibrium / timing of the gears and clutch, especially while focusing on steering. Almost ran into some bushes once or twice, but all in all was pleasant once I got over my initial fear.

Dad was a trooper that day, never yelled at me. God rest his soul! Wonderful memory and bonding experience for a 15 year old girl and her papa!

I started driving same day I bought my first car
Someone just put me through within 10mins, that's all
Within 1week, I was already travelling on highway

when we were little my dad would allow us to start our brand new peugeot 504 in the Base and revv the hell out of engine for good measure, then he would turn the AC on and allow us enjoy it for a while before taking us to school.
I only learnt how to drive a year ago. I enrolled in a driving school where we used a 5 series bmw to learn, i always enjoyed coming back from trip, we would have to peform perfect braking,a case where the car should stop without jerking.
1st week was gear one, by 2nd week boying were tearing gear 3.
Now i tear lagos roads as if my bedroom na express. heheh
I would have learnt much earlier but i went to boarding school all through.

My first lesson was on my Second school field(Untiy Owo),it was a visiting day and my birthday, my Dad's driver gave me the wheels for my 1st drive. it was an effizy learning session to me(I was in JSS 3 then). I drove through the girl's hostel and some part of the boys hostel to the school field, I enjoyed it!

..I used gear one while going and coming back... R yhu kiddin mi?lmao...m nawt xo gud yet buh kant imagin drivin wf jux gear one...u must av bn rly scard dat dae.

I was heading towards a ditch, because i was avoiding a woman and her son who were going to church. my uncle started screaming "te brake, te brake" meaning match brake, match brake. and i replied "mi o ri brake, mi o ri brake"ofcourse i found the brake after landing in the ditch. we got help to bring out the car and my uncle insisted i continue driving until we get home. after parking the car, i dint go near it again. so scary.
