Hmmmm....clears throat...hmmm....from dressing to our best food(Sunday rice), we learnt from colonisation. It is hypocrisy to baptize your face fully with cosmestics alien to your so-called culture and see something wrong in teaching a child British accent. In my opinion, whatever is what learning must be learnt perfectly!

It has numerous advantages.

They said since English originated from Britain, it was important that children learned to speak it in the proper accent, adding that it would help the children to relate better with people abroad.
The bolded is very true.

Also, having a clean British accent in a foreign country, you can teach English language as a native speaker in non-English speaking countries eg China. and the pay is mad!

Nairalanders shouting "fake life" upandan undecided When your brothers and sisters abroad are bleaching their skins to appear "white" and get English teaching jobs. But their accent still lets them off sha. Haha

I wish I had a clean British accent though. Not the fake one. I mean, the real one. It requires re-learning the pronunciation of almost all words you have ever known with the right diction and the right pitch. Wow! Youtube has been helpful for the past two years. It keep getting better.

I won't even pay for my kids to learn that, I'll lead them to the right environment at young age and they'll learn it naturally. Amiiiii o cheesy grin

The parents are bastards, bunch of low self esteemed idiots. I hope they know how the British immigration law works. This is just to intimidate other parents and kids, this is pure show off. BTW do they know how stupid they will sound when people ask them "how long have you been in Britain" and they say never been there or just 1 month?. Stupid parents
These insults are unnecessary. You may have failed to notice that this generation has a horrible spoken and written English. Anything to make it better is not bad.

After ranting and attacking everyone on this thread, you ended up goofing with this argument. So what's essence of British accent if you don't know the basics such as using school as a verb.
I've attached a screenshot showing school as a verb.
You can thank me later.

Dear Lunkhead,

It is still a very valid point of argument that you lack a proper understanding of when and how to use the word " School'. Kindly take note of the following points :

1. The word ' school ' is not a verb . It is grammatically wrong to say : I SCHOOLED in Harvard. From whom did you learn that 'school ' is a verb in this context? SMH

2. The word 'school' applies basically as the COLLECTIVE for FISH when it is understood that they swim together. That's why you could say : A SCHOOL OF FISH. Got this?

When & How To Verbalise the word "SCHOOL".

Gerunds come to mind. When you add 'ing' to a verb it does not merely become a noun except when properly used to do what nouns do.

ING.

1. SCHOOLING the new horses is time consuming ( How does this sound? Incorrect? Hell no ! It is absolutely correct.

The word 'school ' is used as a noun by adding 'ing'. So avoid this pitfall!

2. I SCHOOLED myself to be compassionate. ( I have deliberately used the word 'school ' as a verb to mean that I taught myself the virtue of compassion)

Education is in a state of infirmity in this country. SMH

If I were the President or the Education Minister,I will introduce the topic of racial equality or the understanding that no race is superior/inferior to the other.

Nigerians have inferiority complex, that is why you see policemen being at the beck and call of even Indians and Chinese,or a white guy who had a little qulaification abroad, called an expatriate in Nigeria.

To the topic, these parents are wasting their resources and time,YOU CAN NOT DEVELOP BRITISH ACCENT IN NIGERIA.Your children will be shocked when they get to the UK.They will realize that their accent is still not the real deal.

Secondly, there is no general british accent.THERE ARE SCOTTISH,SCOUSER,MANCUNIAN,LONDON ACCENTS ETC.
Which are they going to teach your children?
God bless you.

English accent is overhyped ,the welsh accent is better plus they're only being taught the stereotypical 'porsche' British accent I presume,if you go to the UK you'll find out accent varies from city to city with various dialects but if parents decide to want that for their kids it's nobodies business I'm certain most people criticizing would want that for their kids but they're just pissed cos they can't afford it,people here talking about inferiroity complex and low self esteem,we Africans all have inferiority complex and slave mentality,we worship and adore the white man what's new? it'll take another 1,000 years to free us from the shackles.

Another good reason why proper English should be encouraged.
Sir nobody is talking about proper English on thread. The debate here is 'accent' so don't bring proper English to play. Not because some of us type informally here does not mean we cannot construct good and proper English in a formal shetting.

And a man who's lived in London for 3 decades walks up to him and asks, "You must have lived in the UK, how long have you lived there for?"

Na to just dig ground enter go dey hungry the person be that grin

Stop writing gibberish, young man.
Writing lengthy, meaningless paragraphs won't justify your argument.
You're not an authority in determining what's wrong or right in English language. So, if you think you've any point, attach links or screenshots supporting your stance just like I did when I "schooled" you on the use of "school" as a verb.
By the way, calling people names doesn't mean you're better than them. It only shows you're not intellectually sound enough to hold civil discussions.

The truth is that accent is not a yardstick to speak good enlish language. If you have ever visited the UK, you ll find out that some Brits has poor gramatical control of the English Language. The funny thing is that the parent are not worried if the grammar is correct, all they are after is accent ; what a shame.

In language there will always be accent and that tells others where exactly you are from. An American has an accent (you won't say they speak bad English Language with their accent) likewise Australians, Newzealand, Irish etc

What is important is for one to pronounce the word correctly so that others will understand what you meant/mean.

Accent is what you pick from environment , society etc Even if they are being taught brit accent in school they ll find it difficult to communicate in the society because the locals ll find it hard to comprehend what they are saying.

A Russian ll speak and construct English grammar correctly with a Russian accent, and a native brits /American ll understand him and that is the aim, in as much as you pronounce your words properly and use the correct tense where necessary you are 100% better than some one with fake accent and poor command of the English Language.

"My conclusion is that a smart guys saw fools that has nothing to do with money and played a fast one on them by introducing British accent"

USA was once a colony of Britain, yet they developed their own English and their own accent.

The Southern USA accent popularly called "Southern drawl" was influenced by African slaves.

UK has regional accents. A certain Minister of a certain African country speaks East London accent.

Queen's Accent does not teach knowledge of Self or Knowledge of Knowledge of one's History. Our problem is Knowledge that is missing in textbooks.

The same Neocolonialism that makes people sell their belongings to cross the Sahara Desert into Libya makes people chase after these accents in search of "development".
