So it is because of Igbo rants you make it compulsory? If Igbo will claim Kano, non of the Kano people will even give them attension. What's yours is yours, no need to drag it if really it is yours. You're just depriving others of admission.

At the end of the day someone can get A in the language without understanding it anything in it.
even if ibo is chased out of Lagos they will still claim they own 99% of Lagos so they bill is not about them but for Yoruba. Ambode and the house of assembly dat pass the bill I don’t think they listened to ibo rant to make their decision

In your boxed mind non-yoruba are not dominting commerce in Lagos, be sincere to yourself lets see how Yorubas can actually get back Lagos economy from Non yoruba, its definitely not through waec subject

You are deluded and an illiterate if you think two by two stalls equate ‘economy’.

Economy of Lagos is dependent on corporate businesses that pay tax. Banks, schools, industries, companies, firms & the likes.

Petty trades you call economy of Lagos is inconsequential & can be taken back if we really want to. Watch how non-Yoruba dominated markets in Lagos will be relocated to the outskirts of Lagos in the coming years and will naturally die out & depopulate Lagos in the long haul

It isn’t only Lagos petty trade that will be taken back, Lagos infrastructure will also be taken back from you lot.

Watch.

They want everybody to understand Yoruba by force or probably an indirect way of telling non indigenes to stay away from their matters which is for political reason I think.

Uncle, your view on this bill is parochial.

First of all you need to understad the early social & cultural history of Lagos and its steady decline since the immediate post colonial days.

Eko people that is Epe, Ijebu, Awori, Yoruba slave returnees from Portugal and Brazil, Egba of Ebute Metta and Sang Otta, Oyo of Ikoyi to mention a few have had their cultural heritage suppresed. This is not the case with your Kano where, despite the multiple population, Hausa culture is still the driving force in the state. It is not so for Eko people, they feel their identities are being erased and they want it back.

The law is not about Igbos or Hausa, it is about the locals wanting to have their state run by their cultural and social practices and the least you & Igbos can do is to respect it.

Anambra & Abia did the same thing & no one cared. When did Yoruba’s business become everybody’s business?

I have no time to get petty.

Petty trade does not equal Lagos economy domination.

And your petty trades will soon be neutralised by moving it to locations with difficulty of access and not only that with high side rent payments which will result in a good number of you dispersing from Lagos.

Just seems like another misguided attempt to save the Yoruba language. It's simple. Whatever language is the language of education will eventually be the language used.

People only learn languages that they see as useful. Trying to force students to learn a language that they won't use has not worked anywhere. Just look at Irish in Ireland. At best this policy will make students learn the small amount of Yoruba they need to pass an exam before forgetting it. At worst people just avoid those places instead. It is near impossible for this to work in Lagos which is too multi cultural and multi ethnic.

Badagry & Ajah people are largely Yoruba these days with Yoruba names & Yoruba language as second language.

There’s no need to go Hitler, that has never worked in Nigeria, rather it increases the love for a place. An example is found in how Hausa have continued to test their suya knives on & do target practise with Yiibo since 1966. Yet, a good number of una keep flocking there enmasse to be killed when they ae tensed.

Sit back & watch the anti-immigrat laws begin to take effect. We are not violent people by default, diplomacy is our natural gift.

Stupid, second language NOT first.

All Yoruba speak our national Yoruba as second language but we revert to our dialects as first when we can.

This is the case with Ogu people.

So it is OK for Abia & Anambra to do similar tjings but not OK for Lagos to do it?

The migrants into Lagos does not make the place ‘multi-cultural’. Eko people of Epe, Ikeja, Ikorodu, Lagos Island & Badagry own the state. These people have a single culture & they want ther states to reflect such and the least you can do is respect it.

LOL sunpo, looking for straws.

Your post is synonymous to asking the LASG to preserve Yoruba dialect of Epe; Yoruba dialect of Awori; Yoruba dialect of Egba & Yoruba dialect of returnees on the island & Oba of Lagos’ palace Bini language.

Lagos indigenes like the rest of Yoruba people im the SW, Republic of Benin & Togo speak two types Yoruba language. The national official type & local dialects.

Lagos indegenss want to promote their national Yoruba language in their state. Get with the programmeor go home, simple.

The suya knives you're making joke with have tasted all southerners, I remember when my southern sister Mrs. Eunice Olawale Elisha( dein na mu) was tested by the suya knives on & used as target practise by the Hausa people. I didn't say they couldn't try it. I only said that it won't work so it is a waste of time. Lagos is a mega city so yes comparing it to homogeneous Igbo towns is silly. The only reason they get away with it is because the South East has few immigrants.

Lastly multi cultural has nothing to do with who owns the city. Regardless of ownership it is full of non indigenous people. Attempts to preserve culture are good and they are welcome to try doing so, it is just unlikely to have any real effect.

The law has its pros and cons

Yes, culture will be prolonged, preserved and encouraged. I see a whole lot of sense

But then, they aren't gonna study the whole of their course years in Yoruba? So why the law?

It is unfair for someone with straight As to be denied admission because he failed Yoruba and while someone who has mixtures of Cs and Ds to be admitted because he passed

As long as the language is not what will be used throughout the course years, then the law should be reviewed

Anyway, I no dey go back school sef. And even if I wanted to, Na LASU I go apply for? grin grin
someone with straight A's shouldn't have problem learning and speaking yoruba.

If it won't have any effect, why then are your people crying? The law is here to stay. I expect ibos to support this law since it will help split Nigeria more. Afterall, they always agitate for a seperate republic.

Your rant is just some consolation for your battered ego. Yiibos have continued to be Hausa’s preferred victims of target practise. When the Hausa really want to engage in massacre they know how to identify Igbo from Hausa.

This is the clear case of ‘merit/domination/victim mentality’ Mr. Throwback was talking about.

You want to analyse other people’s lands but you’re not making the same case for Igala language & culture in Anambra.

This is the problem. Africans want to act educated but are quick to forget education requires the application of the whatever knowledge one has.

How does the mega-city affect the reality of African lands owned by people with centuries of ancestral ties to the land and fit into the Western context of mega-cities where there were no cultures on ground? Isn’t this a recipe for militancy, conflicts and a possible war as witnessed in many other African countries where cultural realities were subsumed?

Oh, so you want the Eko people to have their own culture obliterated for your Nigerian project & in order that Hausa & Yiibos can continue to travel into a ‘Mega City’?

You’re tripping man. There’s such a thing called applied knowledge, take this Western ideas & apply them within the bounds of your realities.

Lagos would have been multi-cultural if the cultures you included were all ancestrally part of Lagos - the cultures you have in mind are migrant cultures. These migrants cultures met a culture on ground and these migrant cultures are heavily limited & regulated by the culture on ground. This is why Eko people can do Oro & tell you to stay indoors but your Yiibo or Hausa culture can not tell the Eko people to stay indoors for your own ritual ceremony or festival. Lagos is not a ‘multi-cultural city’, it has its own culture and sadly, for you, it is Yoruba and this is what the indigene through the state house, the Governor & the Obas wre trying to push inorder for folks like you to understand and respect. It is like saying because Moscow, Bangkok, Mumbai, Guangzhou are multi-cultural because they are mega-cities for the migrant cultures there. See your logic?

Thank me later.
