Sad to hear of Nacho's injury but I was also for him being dropped from that AM role. He does it better with Mikel alongside him in the CM role as we saw against Zambia where Nacho was allowed to be his dynamic straightforward false AM... he was not dictating play in that game... it was Mikel even tho Nacho played according to formation the AM role... but in actuality, he played closer behind Ideye. On this thread, many pages back, I have always been a fan of Iwobi being picked ahead of Nacho in that AM role in the GWG for his silky footballing ways of linking midfield and attack... but maybe with time, Iwobi will mature more and be able to execute that no.10 role in the near future and hopefully more reliable options will pop up within the next two years to take over from Mikel and make that AM role super competitive again. But for this game with Serbia, I am looking at Joel or maybe even an Ogu with Ndidi and Onazi behind them. Nacho won't play the no.10 role as a really natural central attacking midfield player. He is more direct and even though he has the intelligence and Vision to hold the ball and spring the right passes from that role, his attacking instincts as an SS and CF will always drive him forward making him play closer to the box in the GWG. He only falls back occasionally/sometimes to fees off stray balls... Nacho can only play that no.10 role (or more like as a false AM) if he is partnered by a CM (an AM in the disguise of a CM) that will actually dictate play and play to Nacho's direct (false) AM plays and instinctual intelligence to burst forward. We saw this against Zambia when Nacho played alongside Mikel with Onazi just behind them. Now imagine what an Ndidi-Mikel-Nacho combo will be like... hmmm... well it still depends on the level of the opposition. Anyway, just thoughts I felt like adding to this wonderful article by Dami Ugbame Nigeria set for stern test vs. Serbia midfield By Dami Ugbane, KweséESPN Nigeria conclude the first phase of their pre-World Cup programme on Tuesday when they meet Serbia in an international friendly in London. Super Eagles fans have every reason to be optimistic that their team will extend their winning form after downing Poland away on Friday, but a meeting with Serbia will provide them with a stern test - and should represent ideal preparation ahead of their Group D opener against Croatia on June 16. With Argentina lying in wait, it's imperative the Eagles start their World Cup strongly, and the midfield tussle against Croatia - whose main strength lies in the heart of the park - will surely be a key battle ground for Gernot Rohr's side. A meeting with Serbia, who boast similarly menacing midfield options, should allow Nigeria to gauge their strengths and weaknesses ahead with less than three months to go before the Croatia bout. The Nemanja Matic-Luka Milivojevic central midfield partnership for the Serbians has too much quality to be easily overrun, while the dynamic attacking midfield duo of Adem Ljajic and Dusan Tadic will stretch the West Africans. However, despite the potential absence of captain John Obi Mikel and the likely omission of Oghenekaro Etebo through injury, Gernot Rohr could revert to his tried and tested 4-3-3 formation, rather than the 5-3-2 and 4-2-3-1 recently deployed against Argentina and Poland. The 64-year-old German tactician failed to get the best out of Kelechi Iheanacho as the most advanced midfielder against Poland in Wroclaw, and it would be a massive surprise if he retains the Leicester City man in a similar position against Serbia. Furthermore, given Iheanacho's poor work rate and defensive negligence, it will be ill-advised to play him in the middle of the park, particularly as he could be a liability against a hard running and goal scoring box-to-box midfield threat in Milivojevic. What other options do the Eagles have as potential central attacking options against the compact Serbian midfield? Alex Iwobi naturally would have been an option to move inside, but his poor defensive contribution, lack of aerial dominance and poor touches should ensure he remains in a wide area for the encounter. That leaves us with two options: Joel Obi and John Ogu. While Obi was deployed alongside Wilfred Ndidi in the holding midfield role against Poland, the imminent reinstatement of Ogenyi Onazi in the line-up should see the Torino man pushed farther up the field. Obi's technical abilities, defensive discipline, composure and mobility could prove useful, but could his size count against the 'giant' Matic? If Rohr is wary about the potential physical battle against the Manchester United man, then he could be tempted by another left-footer in Ogu. He could certainly hold his own against Matic and Milivojevic, while he also has a habit of weighing in with spectacular goals. Perhaps the late introduction of the 29-year-old Hapoel Be'er Sheva man in place of Iheanacho against Poland was a clear indication of how the team will line-up in midfield against Serbia - Onazi, Ndidi, Ogu. Onazi and Ndidi both have the pace and strength to keep track of Ljajic, a superbly gifted roving midfielder with a keen eye for spectacular strikes, while Southampton's Tadic could be man-marked to reduce his impact. While the Serbians might not exactly have midfielders in the class and mould of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic, the Eastern European nation possess some technically gifted players in the middle, and will give Rohr the chance to assess his options in this pre-Croatia dress rehearsal. COOL10: "Who freaking cares??" Oga, if you have 2 children a boy and a girl that are both in S.S.3 and are due to take S.S.C.E exams, you will say let one of them do it while the other one should repeat the class right ?? Remember that FIFA gives out funding for this programs to ooo. Plus nobody is saying anything about feminism here, all I am saying is that in this age, it will be more profitable to manage these set of female soccer stars, brand them and sell them to Nigerians and Africa at large. NFF is a corporation, corporations are created to manage multiple issues at the same time, they are paying a foreign coach to coach these girls and I am sure he is getting paid in $US, so if you believe the best NFF can do is what they are presently doing concerning female soccer, I pray nobody hires you to manage a serious business/organization, while also praying for the female members of your family. 1 Like |

Uhmmm... Sir Martz... Joel is essentially a CM. A Central midfielder. He can play as an AM but that does not make him one. He is naturally a CM. And can play DM too. More like a CDM but essentially, he is a CM. Martz101: 2 Likes |

DerideGull:if and when we play a 442 with nacho as the ss, then I think the emphasis is on his pressing not midfield or passing prowess. We will always lose the midfield battle. I expect to see a different approach today as Rohr has stated. Trying out different formations. |

The possible midfield combo of Ndidi-Onazi-Joel looks good on paper. It is one of the options I suggested for Tuesday (others were Ndidi-Ogu-Joel or Ndidi-Onazi-Ogu)..... cool. But wow... look at that front line... Musa up top... flanked by Iwobi and Moses. Hmmmm... seems Ighalo may start from the bench then as Rohr looks to utilise Musa's speed thru the center and especially on the counter. Musa have played in such role before for CSKA Moscow so let's see what he brings in that role if he indeed gets to start against Serbia. But it is a most wise decision to continue with Uzoho for this game. Lad needs this momentum. tbaba1234: |

Sir Tbaba1234's confirmed reports.... see how ANS put it. Eagles Final Training: Rohr Hints Uzoho, Musa, Ebuehi, Onazi, Moses & Iwobi Will Start In 4-3-3 Formation Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has made up his mind on the eleven players that will be named in the starting line-up for Tuesday night's pre-World Cup friendly against Serbia, based on the team's final workout on Monday. Bursaspor defender Abdullahi Shehu has failed a fitness test and is unlikely to be involved against the Serbians, and the same goes for Leicester City striker Kelechi Iheanacho and Las Palmas midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo. The trio were involved in the warmup and less strenuous exercises with the squad but were later separated to play tennis as the Team A and Team B were sweating it on the pitch. The practice game ended 1-0, with Arsenal winger Alex Iwobi scoring for the Team A. Everything indicates that Deportivo de La Coruña goalkeeper Francis Uzoho will start in goal against Serbia ahead of Enyimba's Ikechukwu Ezenwa as he played for Team A in the training session. Fit again ADO Den Haag star Tyronne Ebuehi will replace Abdullahi Shehu at right-back, while Troost-Ekong, Leon Balogun and Brian Idowu have kept their places in the starting line-up. Eddy Onazi played for the Team A as a defensive midfielder with Wilfred Ndidi and Joel Obi playing slightly ahead of him. Alex Iwobi and Victor Moses played from the flanks; Ahmed Musa replaced Odion Ighalo as the top striker. Rohr is expected to deploy a 4-3-3 formation against Serbia. I'm telling you. I'm just using corner eye looking at people calling for him to play AM. He'd just be taking shots and doing solo runs. How I wish all Naija players were as selfless as Sergio Busquets. The only suggestion I can think of for Moses, is to have Naija wear Chelsea jersey to see if he'd be passing the ball more often. Maybe cos it was a friendly and he doesn't care that much. Also, he should stop chancing Iheanacho in some cornerkicks and freekicks. He should learn to share. Mujtahida: |
