NwaNimo1: You are right about the three days, but the OP is wrong in claiming that Friday was the crucifixion. It should rightly be between dawn Wednesday (for that Sabbath day was a high-day (John 19.31))and rose about dusk on Sunday, after the weekly sabbath. "Jesus' resurrection had already taken place by the time Mary Magdalene arrived at dawn Sunday morning. (John 20.1-2) In Matthew's account he states that "In the end of [or after] the Sabbath(s), as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week" they came to see the sepulchre (Mt. 28.1)" |

Upritman: I wouldn't think so as Good Friday is the day we recognize Jesus suffering and dying on the cross. It's a serious time for deep reflection of our hearts and minds, and awesome (not cool awesome, but overwhelming awesome) realization that he died FOR OUR SINS. He even did for those who choose to be non-believers! To me, the joy and happiness of Easter is for Easter Sunday when Christians celebrate the rising of Jesus. |

GOOD FRIDAY Most, if not all, religions of the world have one or several forms of celebration. Some celebrate the birth of their founder, some celebrate new moons, harvest time and so on. While Christianity celebrates some similar feasts as these other religions, Christianity stands out in its celebration of what most other religions will consider an abomination: the Cross and the Death of Christ. Most other religions would consider the cross, and death on it abominable. However, on every Good Friday Christians gather to celebrate the suffering and death of Christ on the cross. It is terrible to die on a cross. Deuteronomy 21:23 says, cursed is he who hangs on a tree. The Jews considered it an abomination to be hanged on a tree. The Romans held death on a cross to be so detestable that never will they hang a Roman citizen on a cross, the crime notwithstanding. Yet, on every Good Friday, we gather as a community of the faithful to celebrate the death of Christ on a cross. When we gather, we read the account of the passion of Christ from the Gospel according to John, 18:1-19:42. There is certainly nothing in the whole narrative that calls for a party. We call this unique Friday, Good Friday. What is good about the cross and death of Christ? Why do we celebrate? We celebrate because the Cross of Christ stands revealed as the tree of life. We are not concerned here with an ordinary cross neither are we concerned with a common kind of death. We are celebrating the Cross and the Death of the Son of God for our salvation. Our salvation was sealed with the sacred seal of the precious blood of the Lamb who was sacrificed on the Cross because of his love for us. This is part of the mystery of our faith. In the Order of Mass we have three memorial acclamations and all of them speak either of the Death or Cross of Christ: We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again. When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your Death, O Lord, until you come again. Save us, Savior of the world, for by your Cross and Resurrection you have set us free. This is a proclamation of our faith in the Cross and Death of Christ through which we are freed from the slavery to sin and death. In Galatians 3:13, St Paul says, “Christ ransomed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written, ‘Cursed be everyone who hangs on a tree ...’” By being crucified on the cross, Jesus took away the ancient curse of sin and death that was hanging over our heads. By his death on the cross, Jesus reversed the events of the Fall as recorded in Genesis 3. The tree in the garden was a source of death. The tree of the Cross has become for us a source of life. The sin of Adam, the one who sinned in the garden, brought death. The death of Christ, the sinless one, has brought life for us. Indeed, the Cross of Christ stands revealed as the tree of life. So we glory in the Cross and in the death of Christ. We should never attempt to remove the Cross from Christianity. If we do, what we have is no longer Christianity since there can be no true Christianity without the Cross. As Fulton Sheen would say: “If we leave the Cross out of the life of Christ, we have nothing left, and certainly not Christianity.” Jesus chose the Cross and declared in John 3:14-15, that he will be lifted up on it so that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. It is crucial to note that the verse that follows immediately, that is v.16, is that very popular verse that tells us that God sent his Son into the world because of God’s love for the world. The Cross and the love of God are placed beside each other. Hence, the Cross, for us, is no longer something to be despised but, indeed a symbol of God’s love for us. Let us therefore glory in the Cross. With St Paul let us say, “... may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ ...” Gal. 6:14. But, to glory in the Cross of Christ, to boast in it, we have to be ready to identify with Christ. We have to be ready to say and to keep saying no to sin. We have to reject a crossless Christianity - Christianity without the cross. We have to be ready, as Jesus himself invited us, to take up our crosses and follow him. Some Christians today are not ready to glory in the Cross. Many people who call themselves Christians in Nigeria today stand askance and appalled at true Christianity because there is nothing in it to attract their eyes and indulge their inordinate desires. Some who call themselves Christians despise Christianity with the Cross, because it does not support corruption, cheating, greed, immorality and licentiousness, abortion, same-sex unions, infidelity, hawking and shopping for miracles, tribalism, laziness, materialism and indeed all forms of evils that we usually find attractive. However, if we despise true Christianity because of the Cross then, we also despise the One who hung on that Cross and who was burdened with our sins and in whom our salvation lies. We cannot claim to be true imitators of Christ if we divide Christ up and desire only the glory but never the cross. To be a true imitator of Christ is to embrace the whole Christ. And, it is only by following Christ who suffered and died on the Cross for us that our ills are cured, our pride is humbled, our envy is removed, our anger and malice are quenched, our laziness is cured, our covetousness, greed, gluttony and materialism are tempered, our lust is chastened, and our physical ailments are healed. By his stripes we are healed (cf Isaiah 53:5). In the words of Fulton Sheen: “Unless there is a Good Friday in our lives there will never be an Easter Sunday.” We should never allow anybody or any false doctrine to prevent us from placing the Cross of Christ before us. If we abandon the Cross in our Christian lives then all we have left is a false Christianity that celebrates Easter without a Good Friday. Such a Christianity is false because it can never teach us true love. It can never teach us to love as Christ did. It is Christianity with the Cross that teaches us to love because it enables us to look at the suffering face of a brother or a sister and recognize the face of Christ and so reach out to help the brother or the sister. Christianity with the Cross helps us to make a distinction between the sinner and sin and, while condemning the sin, endeavor to love the sinner to repentance. Jesus died on the Cross to destroy sin and not to destroy the sinner. Christianity that glories in the Cross enables us to recognize and acknowledge that we ourselves are in constant need of God’s healing and forgiveness and so, never live a hypocritical life. Christianity that glories in the Cross teaches us the value of hard work and responsibility that sometimes come with pain. It teaches us to love authentically since love involves sacrifices. We surely learn this sacrificial love from the Cross and Death of Christ. It is this kind of love that we need in our families today, in our communities, in our country, in our relationships and in our dealings with people. Therefore, let us not be ashamed of the Cross of Christ for in it lies our glory and salvation. When we accept the way of the cross, it is not because we are addicted to suffering but because in imitation of Christ, we accept to go through the way of the cross to glory. If we cling to the Cross of Christ, we shall ultimately exchange it for a Crown. The resurrection of the Son of God, our Savior Jesus Christ, is already an assurance to us that, sin and death, suffering and pain, troubles and difficulties, do not have the final say in our lives. In Christ, our Good Friday will surely lead to Easter Sunday. As St Paul told Timothy (2 Timothy 2:11-12): “ The saying is sure: If we have died with him, we shall also live with him; if we endure, we shall also reign with him.” And in Romans 8:14-18 St Paul tells us that: “... those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you received a spirit of adoption, through which we cry, "Abba, Father!" The Spirit itself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if only we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. ” |

CuteMadridista: Certainly you must be special. Your brain must know what 99% of all the brains of the world don't know. Either that or you should check yourself. A person who doesn't believe anything doubts everything. That's a risky way to live. Cos you don't even know what you believe in. |
