The Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Dr. Paulinus Ezeokafor has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s two-day trip to Lagos State during a Christian celebrations as a slap on the face of Nigerian Christians.

Ezeokafor stated that for the President to choose Maundy Thursday and Good Friday to visit Lagos showed disrespect for Christians.

He insisted that Christianity and Islam were two dominant religions in Nigeria, and should be accorded same level of respect, just as the bishop asserted that President Buhari would not have made the trip if it was a Muslim celebration.

The Bishop, who spoke at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka while delivering his Easter message, said, “Government of Nigeria should always apply the principle of equity and fairness in its appproach to issues of national concern.

“President Muhammadu Buhari’s two-day visit to Lagos State to commission a bus-stop on Christians’ most important days was a huge slap on Nigerian Christians.

“Those who advised the president to embark on such trip on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday respectively, advised him wrongly. The said trip could have been undertaken after the Easter celebration or any other time.”

Ezeokafor said Christianity and Islam were the two major religions in Nigeria and should be accorded equal respect and recognition by the powers-that-be, not giving preferential treatment to one at the detriment of the other.

He noted that the Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday were days Christians concentrated on what they believed gave them salvation, even as he described Easter as the greatest feasts in the Christendom.

He however admonished President Muhammadu Buhari to treat every section of the country equally irrespective of religious sentiments.

The Bishop did nt make any sense at all.

The President isnt a christian so he shouldnt be bothered abt d holiday.

Many people including Christians, prayed nd went about their normal business, some in other sectors wnt to work too.

I see nothing wrong with what he did if that time was convinient for him,
The annoying thing he did was to restrict movement.

So assuming it was a 2wks celebration, the whole country should av been on hold huh?

y'all should rest abeg! . Even those that dont even open their bible year to year suddenly have smtin to say just to stir trouble mitcheew!

u take religion too serious, including the muslims.

As far as I'm concerned, whatever is being reacted to in this country is always irrelevant to growth and nation building or perhaps, late!

I don't have a problem with whatever day or date uncle went to Lagos.
My problem is Buhari and Ambode just wasted tax payers money just to commission a bus stop...

It's a shame

must we complain in every thing, the president just like every Nigerian has the right to do anything he feels like doing during Easter festivities, did you complain about church members that travelled to their villages for weddings and businesss? some of this men of God have abandoned their calling for politics.

Never go the way of MURIC. They have since lost any relevance they may think they have.

Sometimes I wonder if you guys are really human beings or some programs robot with the way you all think. Everything is not about PDP or APC but doing the right thing. Are PDP the one that declared public holiday for two days because of the Presidential visit or was it PDP that closed all major roads this Fulani man.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s two-day visit to Lagos State to commission a bus-stop on Christians’ most important days was a huge slap on Nigerian Christians.

So its now widely accepted that our president went to commission a bus-stop while his mates in other countries are thinking of moving out of this planet.

d cleric is just trying to stir unnecessary reactions and paint buhari in bad light. Is d governor of Lagos hu invited buhari to commission d bus terminus, not a xtian? So if ds pastor needs to caution anybody, it should b d Christian governor of Lagos. He can also speak to the Tinubu who organized a colloquium or if he can't speak with him, then he shd invite Tinubu's wife, Remi, after all she is also a xtian like d governor of Lagos

Politicians and religious leaders are Nigeria's biggest problem.

They always deceive and influence their guidable followers thought process.

I can understand where the Bishop is coming from.

The Good Friday/Easter period is by far the most important in Christianity. People go to Church on Thursday and Friday. Creating significant disruption to movement on a day when people plan to head to their places of worship is just in poor taste.

Additionally, the week leading up to Easter is supposed to be a week of sober reflection leadin up to Christ’s sacrifice and resurrection. Why choose that period to hold a gala with so much pomp and gaiety?

Would it be reasonable to hold public feasts in areas with significant Muslim presence during the height of the Ramadan fast?
