U20 Friendly – Flying Eagles Held To Barren Draw By Young Pharaohs Of Egypt

The Nigeria U20 team held the Egyptian U20 team to a 0-0 draw in the first of a two game friendly match against same team in Egypt as part of their preparations for the 2019 African Youth Championship Qualifiers.

Egypt had the best of the chances but Nigeria were resolute in defence and they showed no sign of a team that have only been in camp for just a month, unlike their counterparts who have been training for one months.

Coach Paul Aigbogun lined up his team in a 4-3-3 formation, but the wide men of his team failed to supply the necessary balls for top striker Jesse Akila who started the game to trouble the Egyptians.

Both teams will clash again next tomorrow, and this time around coach Aigbogun will be expecting a better performance in attack particularly as the livewire of his team’s attack Peter Eneji didn’t start this particular game.

Starting 11 vs Egypt U20s – Detan Ogundare – Mike Zaruma, Ikouwem Udo, Mubarak Abdulsalam, Valantine Ozonwofor – Mohammed Jamil, Asuquo Aneikeme, Abubakar Ibrahim, Alhassan Ibrahim – Akila Jesse, Alalade Wasiu

A good start considering the pedigree of Egypt at this level and also considering it is an away game.

Kudos to the NFF. Way to go. More friendlies for the lads.

Mike Zaruma Scores 40 Yards Screamer, Bournemouth's Nnamdi Debuts As Nigeria U20 Slump To Defeat Against Egypt

The Nigeria U20 team lost the second game of their set of friendly games against host Egypt 1-2 earlier today in Alexandria , two days after drawing 0-0 in their first meeting.

Egypt who were dominant in the first tie took the lead in the 25th minute. A score they hanged onto going into the half time break as Nigeria failed to mount any meaningful threat to their goal.

Nigeria came out for the second half a much better team than they were in the first half, with the introduction of CHAN Eagles ace Peter Eneji in the 50th minute turning the game in favour of the Nigerians.

However, Egypt made it 2-0 in a sweeping counter attack move after an attack by Nigerian broke down in the half of the Egyptian, who were well organised at the rear.

Eneji who came in for Bournemouth teen midfielder Nnamdi Ofoborh who shunned England for Nigeria, immediately added pep to the attack of the Flying Eagles but it was right full back Mike Zaruma who stole the headlines for Nigeria.

The young Plateau United full back pulled a goal back for Nigeria with a cracking effort from over 40 yards, which left the goalkeeper of the Egyptian team stranded as it sailed into the net. His goal could easily pass as the goal of the game.

Tried as they could Egypt hanged on to claim the win, although coach Paul Aigbogun would be very pleased with the display of his boys in this game particularly in the second half, unlike in the first game where they struggled badly.

Flying Eagles starting XI: Detan Ogundare ( GK) – Valentine , Mubarak, Ikouwem Udoh (Captain), Mike – Nnmadi Ofoborh, Alhassan Ibrahim,Nur Mohammed, Babawo Ibrahim – Wasiu Alalade – Nazifi Yahaya

How Bournemouth Nnamdi Ofoborh Who Snubbed England For Nigeria Performed On His Flying Eagles Debut

An analysis on the performance of Bournemouth midfielder Nnamdi Ofoborh in his debut game for the Nigeria U20 team in their 1-2 loss to Egypt has been provided by Owngoalnigeria.com editorial team.

Ofoborh started for the Flying Eagles in the game, which was the second game of their two games friendly against Egypt as part of their preparations for the commencement of the qualifiers for the 2019 African Youth Championship.

He started out on the right with Nura Mohammed playing on the left in coach Paul Aigbogun 4-3-3 formation, and he showed glimpses of his potential for the duration he was on.

The slick left footed Ofoborh, who snubbed the chance to represent England impressed with his abilities on the ball, as well as his willingness to always be on the ball.

He made himself available for a pass, and his decision making when in possession caught the eyes on three occasions when he was put under pressure by the Egyptians.

Overall he had a decent game considering he only trained with them 24 hours before the game, and although Nigeria lost, it will still remain a memorable debut for Ofoborh who lasted 50 minutes before making way for Peter Eneji.

Bournemouth Congratulate Highly-Rated Midfielder On Nigeria Debut

Premier League side Bournemouth have congratulated their midfielder Nnamdi Ofoborh, who made his debut for the Nigeria setup across all levels on Wednesday as the Flying Eagles were beaten 2-1 by hosts Egypt.

The 18-year-old lasted 55 minutes on the pitch in his first game for the African powerhouse.

The Cherries were quick to acknowledge Ofoborh after the game in Alexandria, posting on Twitter : ''@NnamdiOfoborh4 made his @thenff U20 debut today. Congratulations, Nnamdi! #SuperEagles ''.

While Ofoborh has committed his international future to Nigeria over England, where he was raised, the Nigeria Football Federation earlier attempted to lure Bournemouth's top prospect Jordon Ibe to the national team without success.

It should be noted that Bournemouth agreed to release Ofoborh to the Nigerian Federation at short notice because the games against Egypt were held during the international break.

He plays primarily for the Cherries U18 team but has some games under his belt for the U23s this season, having trained with the squad in Spain during pre-season in July 2017.

Note that he was released because of the international break. Meaning that we can get a lot of these players if we organize Friendlies such as this during the international break.

CAF should also adjust their U20 qualifiers time table to for follow the international break so that teams will have their best players available.

I still believe that our 21 team can be playing friendlies during international breaks.

Aigbogun says Flying Eagles on track after Egypt tests
By admin - March 29, 2018, 9:27 am 325

Coach Paul Aigbogun has said the Flying Eagles are on track after two test matches against their Egyptian counterparts.

The Nigeria U20s drew 0-0 in their first game in Alexandria, while they lost the second game 2-1 on Wednesday.

“We came here (Egypt) to look at the boys we have put together and that we are working with, and to see if we are on the right path. On the evidence of performance by the boys from the two matches, I believe we are,” Aigbogun remarked.

“We also came here to see how they would cope in game situations, and we were not disappointed.”

“Losing narrowly against an Egyptian U20 side that had been in camp for upwards of one year was not a bad performance, but a message to work harder.”

He added: “In friendly matches, it is not the result that matters. We drew our first leg and lost the second 2-1, but I am very happy that not only have we come away with vital lessons, our objectives for the tour have been met.”

AFC Bournemouth midfielder Nathan Nnamdi Ofoborh debuted for the Flying Eagles after he opted to represent Nigeria and not England.

In May, the seven –time African champions will play the winners of the Sierra Leone vs Guinea Bissau preliminary fixture in the first round of the 2019 Africa U20 Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Goalkeepers Crisis – Bnei Sakhnin Ex Nigeria U17 Goalkeeper Akpan Udoh Gets Flying Eagles Invitation

The goalkeeper of the title winning Nigeria U17 team of 2015 Akpan Udoh has been invited to the present Nigeria U20 team under the guidance of coach Paul Aigbogun.

Udoh is presently keeping goal for the youth team of Israeli side Bnei Sakhnin, and in the over 16 games he has kept this season, he was posted shut out in nine games with three man of the match awards to his name as well.

As reported by this portal, the issue of a good goalkeeper is one of the problems the U20 team are currently facing, and the coaches are hoping Udoh will be an upgrade on the goalkeepers they have in camp.

A club source revealed to Owngoalnigeria.com, that he was invited last month but visa issues stopped him from honouring the call, which would have seen him take part in the two friendly games they played against Egypt.

He is however expected to join the Flying Eagles in camp when the league ends in Israel. Udoh is not new to the demands of playing for the U20s as he kept goal for the Emmanuel Amuneke lead team of 2016 that failed to qualify for the African Youth Championship.

Popular Israeli scout David Ouziel manages the affair of the shot stopper, whom many believe has the ability to become the Super Eagles first choice goalkeeper in a not too distant future.

Samuel Chukwueze who recently bagged a hattrick and an assist in Villarreal U-19s' 8-2 win over Ucam Murcia is eligible for the present U-20 team and is reportedly among the foreign based U-20 stars that will likely join up with the team at or towards the end of the European season.

I believe the preset crop of our U-20 have what it takes to perform better at the AYC and World Cup as long as the right players are invited to the team.. By "the right players " I mean those who are eligible with enough evidence of being in the right age bracket not the NPFL players like Douglas Achiv and Peter Eneji Abeg..
