How I wish real people could help me on the hopes of BDS holders in Nigeria.
-A friend said it's all about maxillo-facial surgery.
-A BDS graduate regrets for not getting internship placement for 5yrs,that the course is only worth vying for abroad.
-A Prof. said Pharmacy is very lucrative, that they sell expensive drugs and make huge gains.
-A colleague said Nigeria BDS holders can only work abroad after a further training unlike MBBS who only writes an exam, because our training in Nigeria is rather crude.
-And a lot of things.
-And they urge me to convert 279@UTME from pursuing BDS to getting MBBS.

*Who has anything to say?

You were poorly informed by whoever told you that garbage.

To start with, I am a medical student and not a dental student so I will be unbiased and tell you some gospel truth.

1. Graduate of Medicine and Surgery face more stiffer competition for internship placement compare to their dental counterpart. You will never here of any case of a dental graduate searching for where to do house job unlike the numerous cases of such recorded by mbbs graduates.

2. Dental Doctors are scarce compare to medical doctors. For every 30 Dental students, their are at least 120 medical students. They are highly sought after because of their dwindled population

3. MBBS and BDS are both treated as the same on the same salary scale. For the record, the only different between MBBS and BDS is that due to the complexity of the maxillio , head and neck region, a Medical student have to specialize early during undergraduate studies to become a dental doctor while an MBBS holder still has to go for a 3-7 years residency to specialize in whatever field of interest. (specialist are dentist, neurologist, gynecologist etc.)

A BDS holder is a surgeon while an MBBS holder is a physician. (physician are those boring doctors that sit all days in an office just attending to patients).

Mind you, the only aspect we medic are more inform than dentist is in the area of obstetric and gynecology, and physciatric while they are more vast in the head and neck region.

Go for BDS if you love it and don't be discouraged by ignorant people who don't even know what is called a CARDAVA.

You will even here some ignoramus say, dentistry is all about pulling teeth.

If not for the fact I would like to specialize in cardiothoracic surgery or plastic surgery, I personally would have opted for BDS.

Even many people have discouraged me ON studying MBBS. They said many doctors are beggars, one of them even told me he knows a doctor collecting not more than #50, 000. I was told medicine is no longer lucrative like in the days of 80s and 70s. If I had listen to the nonsense and jargon people told me, I would have just accept Agric in good fate.

I just see them as ignorant and blind haters.

The fact is Nigerians love to display their ignorance openly.

If you have the money, apply to a private university or go abroad. Advantages include, your 6years is 6years provided you don't fail and have to repeat, no lecturer would deliberately fail you, lesser number of students in class and etc. And no, the school you attend doesnt determine how good you would be in practice or what not, it's your personal efforts that determine such, so far the school is accredited, then case is closed. Therefore, those of you saying you prefer Federal to State or private, I have nothing but pity for you. I have schooled in all the 3 and what I can say is: don't be fooled by past glories! Nigerian education is all crap and patch patch! It's your personal efforts that distinguish you . No one is interested in where you finish from in the labour market, your skills would stand you out! Time is money, be wise!

Vist the MDCN to see list of accredited private schools.
I know of Afe Babalola, Bowen, Babcock, Igbinedion, Madonna Universities.
Fees about 3million per annum.
Igbinedion is the first to start amongst them(2001), with 12sets of graduates.
Others, they cage you and treat you like kids, so I'm not a fan.

I don't think UI is less or more competitive than ABU. I school in ABU, and I tell you if your brother could top your state he'd surely be admitted... All he needs to do, is to study H-A-R-D-E-R for Post-Utme (who said 100% or 400/400 is impossible?).. No university will refuse to admit you when you merit it (especially into MBBS).

That said....Less competitive universities to me connotes state-owned universities...
Its easier to gain admission in UI if you are from the North central with very good score like the guy you quoted. ABU is extremely competitive for North Central guys compared to UI.
