Nemesis, how would you access the performance of Syrian Air Defenses against tomahawks, Scalp and Storm shadow cruise missiles (fancy names grin)?
Reports are claiming Air Defenses shot down 71 missiles of 103 fired. Pretty good, but let me get your opinion seeing India operates lots of Russian ADS.

oga Henry in my own humble opinion thou it might not be need.its either the units that shot the missiles down are Russians or are Syrian units supervised by Russians.

I believe there were Russian advisors in the area. The amount of missiles shot down is impressive. However 30 year old systems shooting down top of the line missiles shows the durability of Russian systems.

"Imagine if the systems used were S-400's?".

don't forget Russian weapons are cheap but highly capable.

also this is a source of practical lessons for Hezbollah and the Iranian military.

Difficult to access without independent sources.

It would be foolish to trust news from both sides as they will try to score on propaganda , exclusive of what happened actually ie effectiveness of weaponry from either sides.

U see in real life AFAIK combat effectiveness of weapon systems degrades by a good margin under the pressure of war ie human and sensor degradation which is expected.

Only in movies things go as per planned grin

Fog of war takes a heavy toll on every system including humans.

As for Russian ads , Ind.. experience has been mixed

Export versions r monkey models grin ( be it Russia China or west etc)

During a exercise some years ago a strela missile (I think) locked on to the heat signature of a vehicle exhaust and the vehicle occupants managed to escape becz the arming mechanism did not active grin grin grin

Personally my believe is only indigenous weapon systems can save Ur ass at the end of the day.

ADS systems r very Maintenance intensive , so if u buy a foreign one and don't get the product support along with , it is as use full as a museum piece.

Also one must access the system performance and operational capability in-house and device usage tactics based on it , dependence on OEM data / tactics is kind of useless . Becz different country different operational situation , different supporting elements etc etc

Russian weapons are not cheap. That's a misconception i used to have. When we add maintenance cost etc, we see they are just as expensive.

From news reports, they seem to be very capable.

Although my wet dream was seeing a Russian military response, that was always unlikely to happen as super powers don't go to war with each other.

Normal bombing of Eastern Goumma is set to resume shortly anyway.

That's one way of looking at it. However in a hypothetical scenario were all variables conform, what will you rate the response?

That's difficult to rate ,

Simplistically speaking depends on how many missiles were fired either at high altitudes or low altitudes flight path towards their approach to the targets.

Buk has a good chance to intercept the ones at high altitudes but low probability of kill against the ones flying at low altitudes , due to limitations of minimum pick up range of radar and minimum engagement zone of buk missiles.

If low level ADS like pantsir was deployed then it has high kill probability against ingressing low altitude missiles (according to OEM)

If the 2 were employed in combination and the operators had a clear RAS picture , then it would blunt the attack by the waves of missiles.

Nirbhay cruise missile poster

Range 1000km

Weight 1000kg

Very interesting flight path of nirbhay missile

Especially the pop up manuver and the dive at the terminal stage

Also the terminal stage homing is via RF / EO / IR seeker

Single or dual or triple homing mode ?

Again interesting warheads

PCB ( penetration cum blast ) and BCF ( blast cum fragmentation )

PCB for bunkers , underground shelters , hardened hangers , WMD storage etc (vertical dive will take it out, just go to do the terrain profiling correctly)

BCF for open targets like staging areas, ammo depos, dispersal areas etc
