How many cars that are on the road were made in 1995?
They said if the 5w30 is not available, use 20w50 but quickly use the recommended oil at the next service. Do you know the common problem with cars that soak plugs? Oil

Most commercial cars n bus sir.Do u know better than d car manual?

W means winter i.e temp at wich d oil wont freeze

They generally recommend 5w 30 bc THE CAR IS MANUFACTURED IN COLD COUNTRIES and since Africa e.g nigeria dont produced one WE CAN DISREGARD CONVENIENTLY sae 5w 30 and choose above it bc we are in hot region. We mostly use fairly used cars in here while very few rich ones buy newer cars. These ones can import their oil if they love their cars.Lastly, frequent change of oil is extremely important.Google this topic to see why car companies recommend 5w 30.

Bros are u saying all sae 20w50 are bad irrespective of their company? Not all cars carry sae type on their engine oil cap.Hence, see owners manual will b d next option.A certain car manual recommended Sae 5w30 but said frantically that if sae 5w30 is not available then one can choose from d available list which included Sae 20w50.Pls dont label ppu ignorant just like that just bc they use oil with not too old technology.Your reasoning is like telling ppu to discard their old phones just bc d latest android version is 8.1 while those using android 4.4 are label ignorant. Most of us in Nigeria still drive tokunbo cars bro. Some as old as 1993 to 2000 editions of cars. And they all have stated oil that still work. The most current Api is SN have it in mind too that 2nd current is Sl which is where some sae 20w50 belong.
You are correct but if your phone has a 4g network and you decide to use 2g, what will you get? That is the same with oils. All toyotas, kia, and hondas sold brand new in the country does not carry the oil specification sign on the cap. That is the begining of deceit. Meanwhile, there are too many info on the US spec oil cover telling first that it must be gasoline engines only, must be 5w30, the Api specification is listed there and then you get energy conserving. So the oil must not be diesel and gasoline like mobil 1 from Egypt, must be the api specified and the oil it has been tested to use.

Just follow what’s written in your car manual, if you don’t have any, simply Google “Car Make, Model and Year - Car Manual” e.g. “Toyota Camry 2013 Car Manual” and used what your car manufacturer specify as Engine Oil Grade. It is that simple.

Also, if your car manufacturer says use 0w-20 and you think 20w-50 is the best Engine Oil for your car, that’s also a good and wise decision, since it’s your car, your money and your decision.

The op that start the thread is yet to advertise anything and even if he does, you make the final decision since it’s your money and your car.

Whether Used or Brand New Car, just follow your car manufacturer specifications.

Very Simple and Straight Forward.

About this oil matter, all the oil recommend are correct includding the 20w50. All we need do is to do some research. I have been busy checking user manual of most vehicles. Now they have a chart for anticipated ambient temperature.. using 20w50 in modern cars is correct. Mostly in areas where the temperature is very high.

10 or 5w30 is like the average between the high side and the low side.

For recommended oil viscosities, refer to the chart. 10W-30 grade oils are not recommended for sustained high speed driving.

What i mean is. In US n Canada where most of our cars come from, the manufacturer has to recommend an oil that can protect the engine from below freezing 0'C to 40'C ambient temperature. This is because it is not practical to change oil every time you driving between two regions of low temperature and higher temperature levels.

Here in Nigeria except you driving to some norther states during the harmattan period, where temperature can be as low as 12'C. You are safer running those cars with 20w50. As a matter of fact, if you run inter states, 20w50 is better cos of the high rev, high operating temperature and long distance.

The down side of 20w50 is in low fuel economy which may be put as 5 to 13% loss

You have summarised the whole matter. Thank you very much. I have no interest in any particular oil. If the motorists like, let them use groundnut oil but in the end, someone else will buy the crap and go through pains trying to fix what the previous owner has destroyed. That is the reason for this thread. You cannot buy a car for 1m and then use 4k oil, then good luck. If the manufacturer tells you to use a particular oil and your mechanic tells you to use another for our hot weather, goodluck. In all their manuals, they always recommend an oil grade for all weather.

if you are the type that does short trips 10w30 will be cool for u. But at high rev and high temperature, bros your better protefted with 20w50. Take manual from two thesame vehicle for america and the middle East, u will find difference in oil spec. Thinner oils also burn out faster as well

a simple research would have suffice. Stop some vehicles on the road and ask for there owners manual. Lots of drivers will gladly assist you with it when you talk about there vehicle.some times google is not your friend.

I can respond well now. The previous oil chart you posted, showed that the chart was for older cars wey back the 90s while the current chart is for modern cars. If api sf was valid at the time of the old chart, then it is very obvious that it was old. From the new chart, you can see the oil sequence. 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30 are suitable for all weather. All weather and then the last on the list is the 20w50 in case you happen to find yourself in the desert. From the same chart, you can see that the fuel recommended is premium unleaded fuel for toyota cars, the type recommended for bmw and audi and acura etc. Now we have a problem. If you use the 20w50 oil and you use regular fuel, on a car that the manufacturer has recommended otherwise, what will be the outcome? The two issues that torment our vehicles in this country is oil and fuel and it is a sad reminder that we are enjoying this ignorance.

I want to use the MRS SAE 40 oil for my 2000 c240. I have researched and found that diesel engine oil works great in petrol engines.
Better cleaning agents leaving your engine super clean. And meets the API SF/SN/SJ criteria I think.

I am surprised at a lot of information on this thread. The relevant issues here should be the API classification. In fact the first digits of the multigrade oils are absolutely irrelevant to our climate.

you are right on the API. But the the 20 in 20W50 means at -7'C this oil will flow as 20 oil protecting the oil while at 100'C the oil act as a 50 oil without thinning. We do not have speed limits in Nigeria n we drive in excess of 120km/hr. 0w20 cannot protect you for that long?

Maybe you are trying to console yourself that you are using 20w50. I am not begging you to buy oil from me. Why does the US spec put 0w20 on their oil cover, gasoline engines, energy conserving and the SA spec does not put it there? You are looking at the chart from the top instead of the bottom. 0w20, 5w20 and 5w30 all covers minus to plus degrees and if you feel that you know better than the manufacturer, good luck to you. How many brand new Toyotas bought locally in 2012 that are still good looking, engine wise? You will see a 2006 Toyota imported from the US and it will look brand new than the brand new bought here.

Good to know that you know much about oil. API SD is the minimum oil benchmark that SON allows to be produced locally or even import. Oando, Mobil, Forte, Total and others are still producing these oils in 20w50 classifications and many happy buyers are buying. Imagine SON allowing oils made for 1971 engines to be used in 2018.
As for your Benz, when you try that diesel oil, please bring the car to us to help you demolish it. That car has 12 plugs and as we speak, the sludge inside the engine can block pen cinema drainage. First flush the engine and look for Mobil 1 USA. There is nowhere you can find API SJ, so I will advise that you settle for the API SN. They are backward compatible. Everyone has moved forward, it is only in Nigeria that oil marketers are producing oil for their grandfathers cars of yore.

bros i tire o. He is telling me to read the chart from below. He claimed the chat i post waa from 10yrs ago. I went into the car to personally take a snapshot of the manual. He is still telling me its wrong. Light oil are for countries with two extreme weather conditions and the manufacturer knows humans do not follow instructions, so they recommend oil that can function in both extremes with a warning that these light oil cannot protect at higher rev or extreme load conditions.
