There is nothing to understand.

We do not have a cough epidemic.

Should these manufacturers have witnessed a disproportionate increase in demand they should have cried out even if it was strictly for cough.

Anywhere else in the developed world and they might have their licences revoked.

Enough with your 3rd world reasoning.

Kindly ignore that guy. They always bury their heads in the mud and always expect government to do everything.

You can't blame him. Most are educated illiterates who just know how to read and write. Like the company does not know there's a major increase in the consumption of the drugs and just kept churning out drugs they knew was a controled substance?

What about the other useful drugs Emzor produces? What will happen to them?

So let me even assume that Emzor was somehow guilty which they are not.

So this govt will permanently shut down Nigeria's biggest pharmaceutical company.?

Mr 1st world Reasoner, we are not even in the same time zone and I doubt if you've even been to the developed world you now represent.

Your mentality is bruised.. Codene is not mainly Emzors, lots of imported products fill the market, other manufacturers do, its just that Emzor got caught in a web by an investigative journalist.

There is no point arguing with you Mr 1st world country reasoner.. Its a bit lugubrious that most people that have never left the shore of the country always claim to have superior argument on behalf of the developed world.

Please cite an instance anywhere in the world where a pharmaceutical company was fined for manufacturing several legitimate drugs more than 'supposed' market demands.

The companies work with regulatory agencies to understand the market.. In Nigeria the regulatory agency is dead but awake after media onslaught.

Shut up Mr develop world reasoner..

Bros,

I doff my hat for you with this submission
1. I think and suggest that regulatory authorities needs to come down hard when ethics and value for human lifes is sacrificed for ungodly profits.
2. Just like you suggest here, heavy fine is not enough. The Managing Director must be sacked and jailed. The company must be wound down. These are necessary steps to make sure other companies adhere to the ethics of the profession and make value for human lives a primary and uncompromising objective

rusher14:
Emzor and the likes cannot claim they didn't realise a disproportionate hike in demand of a product that is strictly a medicine one that could be abused.

When you start churning out medicines like you would beverages it means you are encouraging abuse.

A massive fine should be imposed on these pharmaceutical companies who participated in encouraging abuse of this product well against the ethics of the profession.

I see Nigerians above me once again supporting evil because that is their latest fad.

Nigeria would never be that country you desire it to be as long as your immediate reaction is cynicism and hate.

I have said it that only in Nigeria would you find people putting up such defence.
Don't you guys get tired of supporting evil?
Would your society evolve for the better with your view point?

Thanks for giving the idiot this simple answer...He couldn't use his brain to know that pharmaceutical companies and pharmacist have responsibility to control certain drugs from being sold to the general public(Emzor, nd the likes along with their personnel, who at a time might have sworn to this oath have breached these)...I pray Nigerians realize oneday that we all have collective effort to move this country forward. The same attitude the guy portrayed is what lot of us portray while government is fighting corruption. I keep saying it, Nigerians do not deserve a better Nigeria...

They only acted because it was reported by a foreign media. Else they would have been playing politic with it as usual. Funny enough, the highest users were from a particular region. After taking it, they will all obey the last command without reasoning.

Are you listening to yourself?

So who will absorb the workforce thrown into the labour market?

Who will replace Emzor in Nigeria's pharmaceutical industry? In terms of research, products, and local manufacturing.

And most importantly, Will your useless govt go after the much bigger British pharmaceutical companies importing codeine into the country.

I don't know y they are ganging up against emzor, they nafdac gave them the license to produce codeine, they gave them the specific quantity to be produced daily, why are they now sealing the company, have it been established that they produce more of the drug,or is it just because the owner of the company is from the east,or maybe because she is a woman

This is a lazy mans way of attempting to curb the drug abuse problem in nigeria. It is foolish thinking to believe those that are addicted to codeine would simply just stop abusing drugs when they dont have access to it. There are too many alternatives to codeine to think simply banning the drug or closing down the manufacturing companies would make any impact. It won't even cause a dent in the problem.Tramadol abuse is a far greater problem than codeine. Its a prescription only drug, same as codeine, yet getting it is almost as easy as buying paracetamol. Also, drugs like codeine and tramadol have overwhelming medicinal values and has saved alot more lives than its abuse has damaged. A sane govt would focus on why we have a drug abuse problem in the first place and not the symptoms of the problem. What they are doing now is likeable to using paracetamol to treat malaria instead of antimalaria medications. We have a long way to go

codeine is not an illegal drug. It is the world's best cough therapy.

If people get high on penicillin for example, are you going to sanctions companies producing the product.

What kind of idiots do we have in this country?

There are British companies producing and exporting codeine. Why haven't the BBC called for their investigation?

Are you sure the BBC were not contracted by a foreign pharmaceutical. ? They are certainly not beyond that.
