Messi: Argentina Must Prepare Well, Take Average Teams Seriously At Russia 2018

Argentina captain, Lionel Messi has warned his teammates to be wary of the ‘average teams’ at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Argentina will face Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria in group D at the World Cup in Russia.

Messi who still rues La Albiceleste’s 2014 FIFA World Cup final defeat to Germany in Brazil admits in an interview with Mundo Albiceleste, that the two time World Champions must be prepared to end their long wait for a third World Cup title.

“We all have to be fine in order to do well in the World Cup. It gets more difficult because the teams are better prepared,” Messi began in an interview with Mundo Albiceleste

“Having gone to three finals and lost them all is a huge weight that we have. We want to overcome that barrier.”

Argentina with Messi lost two Copa America finals on penalties to Chile in 2015 and 2016. They also lost the 2014 World Cup final in Brazil.

“Today, an average team can break you down defensively, and on the counter can beat you 1-0. Football has become very competitive, very tactical.”

The Barcelona superstar also plays down the comparison between him and legendary Diego Maradona insisting that he wants to be remembered for what he has done for football.

“I don’t care about being the greatest of all time. Just the fact that people talk about what I have done or how my career will be remembered offers me satisfaction,” he said.

“I never looked to be the greatest or the second or third or fourth best.”

He also praises his national team coach, Jorge Sampaoli who claims that he (Messi) is the greatest footballer of all time.

“Sampaoli gives you all the information that you need for the matches, he’s not always on top of you. He does work with intensity. He always asks you to do things at maximum effort.

“Sampaoli told me personally I was the greatest of all time. But I think coaches look for ways to try to get the best out of their players. I just didn’t expect him to say that publicly and the instance that he said it in.”

I am re watching the Nigeria vs Serbia match and to be honest if that was a real competitive match Serbia could have gotten a red card or 2 of them...They were unnecessarily aggressive.

Sir you want Ahmed Musa out and Joel in but Musa have better chance than Joel though injury free Joel is difficult to drop.

You don't get the point. How many Nigerians had access to satellite TV in the mid 90s? It took till early 2000s before it even became accessible to many.

You are missing the context of the debate. Some people claim to have been following clubs in Europe since the 90's. I am pointing out it is true. Some people did. Lots even though a large percentage of the current football lovers did not, it does not change that fact.

M7even:

I was 7 years old at the 98' World Cup. That was about my class as well. I was a precocious chap. Followed Nigeria match all through the World Cup. I stumbled upon Brazil playing one day in the group stage. Beautiful football I was attracted to. I immediately sat down that to enjoy a high scoring side, free flowing football that mesmerized my bubbling heart. I'd watch delima Ronaldo display his skills and run on to the Sandy field at oshodi to display my skills with my age groups. Sadly I was 7 no one around me at that point like an age mate to discuss this with. All I did was yearn to listen to adults talk football. At Korea Japan I was in kings college Lagos then. I'd leave the class room to the house masters window to peep and watch the beautiful game. At that point I was a master of the game amongst my colleagues. Wider football knowledge and was barely matched in football and sports by any colleague. My academics performance dwindled, my mum was so worried she needed take drastic actions, hence, she would beat me if I played football let alone watch football. I struggled with this as I just loved the game. This really killed my intense interest in the game.

All dis things are normal,I love d game too..d question is at ur age den could u differentiate each players position like u do now
Differentiate BTW a LWB from LB judging @ d formation switch from 4-5-1 to 3-5-2,identify each formations teams were using d likes 3-6-1,4-1-4-1,4-3-3, and tactical switch, when a coach makes tactical change when his team is one man down(a child of den would think he changed d player because he was tired or injured)

I could remember a scenario during Atlanta 96 when KANU scored,he expected d game to play on,and he was surprise d referee blew d end of d game.he was later tutored abt d "golden gold rule" den same age of @7

Just like boss mujtahilda will say,at DT age den u belong to d class of who score, who dribble and not having comprehensive in depth analysis of d game cool

So any oda moniker claiming to knw what he/she understand what transpired in a game at age 8years below..same explanation goes to u cool

Even if some people were watching live EPL and other European league matches (except UCL) through Digital satellite they will not be up to 1% of our population.

Nigeria with their fast players will be tough warns Argentina’s Nicolas Tagliafico

The Super Eagles will be difficult opponents as they have some fast players, according to Argentina defender Nicolas Tagliafico.

Nigeria and Argentina will clash for a fifth time at the World Cup in Russia on June 26 in Saint Petersburg.
The Eagles have a lost all four previous World Cup meetings against the two-time world champions, but they stunned Argentina 4-2 in a friendly in November.

“Nigeria are very difficult opponents to play against, we always face them at the World Cup, they have some fast players,” the Ajax Amsterdam left back warned in a television documentary.
“We are in a difficult group, so it won’t be easy at all.”
Croatia and Iceland are the other teams in Group D.

pinnick has done that already by given rohr a new 2 year deal. regardless of the teams performance rohr is on the right track and i foresee this team doing wonders in the next afcon if they qualify. rohr's positive input in this team is obvious by the way the team qualified in style from one of the toughest groups when no one gave them a chance. i must also commend pinnick and his crew for giving their immerse support to the coaching crew by creating an enabling environment for them to work. for once the interference of agents and God-fatherism which have bedeviled our national team for a long time is now a thing of the past. now players turning out good performances in their various clubs both in the local scene and Europe are given fair chances to prove themselves by inviting them by merit. now we have a coach who makes out to to visit our players in their various clubs to check how they are fairing and also intervene on their behalf when they aren't seeing much playing time.

Icon79:
Thank you! I just hope that the NFF and Nigerians, in general, would be patient enough to give Gernot Rohr a chance to continue his project regardless of how we perform in Russia. I don't like all these unrealistic expectations and targets they seem to be setting for the team. Our team is good but not that good compared with the teams we'd be facing in Russia.

As I was telling someone here a few weeks ago, our 2014 team was even more talented and more experienced than the team we're taking to Russia. The only thing we have going for us this year is the organization and hopefully the technical acumen of our current technical crew.

Monreal over Alonso is a bizarre choice. Having said that their GK, DEF and MID look outstanding. All in all, not a lot of surprises here, but I am surprised they're left Marcos Alonso out. And to a lesser extent Bellerin and Fabregas as well.

Having said that, look at the players Spain, Germany and France can leave out compared to how we struggle to find 23 half decent players to fill out squad. Puts the Nigeria's Squad in perspective. Spain can afford to leave out Alonso, Fabregas, Bellerin, Morata etc. Let's hope that those airheads at the NFF can see that, as they go on with their ultimatums of semi finals and shis.

I mean, looking at the Brazilian, Spanish, German, French and Belgian teams shows just how far we are behind in terms of quality. Gernot Rohr deserves a compliment not an ultimatum!

O pari

Remember the Spanish coach, Lopetegui, is a tippy tappy footy ministry coach and if you compare Monreal and Marcos Alonso, you will notice that Monreal has a deeper level of education in the tippy tappy footy ministry than Alonso.

Monreal worked with Pellegrini at Malaga and Arsene Wenger which makes it easier for the Spanish coach to transmission, transmission is ministration to Monreal than Marcos Alonso.

Iwobi Joins Onazi, Aina, Ekong Uyo, Eagles To Train At 5pm
By Kayode Ogundare in Uyo

The Super Eagles pre-World Cup training camp opened in Uyo on Monday morning and Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi is the latest player to hit the Ibom Meridian Hotel Camp thereby bringing to five the number of players in Camp.

Iwobi joined vice-captain Ogenyi Onazi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Ola Aina and Bursaspor of Turkey defender William Troost-Ekong as early arrivals.

The Arsenal star touched down at the Ibom International Airport around 12noon aboard a plane from Lagos accompanied by his father Chuka and he was immediately driven off after completing airport formalities.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles will have their first feel of the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium turf at 5pm after they would have been boosted by the arrival of other players expected in camp.

According to team co-ordinator Patrick Pascal, coach Gernot Rohr and other members of the technical crew are already present in Uyo and itching to get on with the team’s training programme.

The Super Eagles are expected to trade tackles with the Leopards of Congo D R next Monday in Port Harcourt before proceeding to London where they will play the Three Lions of England at the Wembley Stadium on 2 June.

I knew what was football during Atlanta 96,though I can't really comprehend d rules and regulation @ age 7

I didn't watch most games, because I was too naive to understand d rules,d game time wereearly part in d morning, games where played around 11pm,12am,1am,2am.d rules den for kids generally was to sleep after dinner,Max by 9pm,I dey bed
Only my my siblings who re older would go out in d middle of d night to watch games at a popular joint where dey own a generator set...generator set den was very expensive and not to popular among d masses

So abeg in a nutshell,if u re not up to age 13-15years during 94 world cup and 96 Atlanta tourney, stop analysing matches for us grin grin

Mr man, everybody is different. My first soccer game of importance, was a game in Tunisia 94, where I think Yekinni scored a beautiful goal, the one in which he "height"(like we used to say then) the goal keeper in a one on one situation and then he finished it with his head, I was 8 years then. After that we played Ivory Coast, that one ended in penalty, I remember thinking the Ivory Coast team was better than the super eagles then. The Zambia game I only got the last few minutes because of NEPA. Fast forward to USA 94, by then I had already understood the concept of Soccer, the important players, Maradona, Batistuta before the game started and during the game, the names Mustapha Haji, Roberto and Dino Baggio, Martin Darlene, Bebeto, Romario, Dunga, LaLas, Escobar and a host of others.
So Mr man, every childs comprehension is different the other.

You are not the whole Nigeria. I told you by 1996, Multichoice devices was rampant in a lot of homes in Port Harcourt. People in those houses were following Euro football. By 1997, people were hacking Multichoice devices and cable satellite free to Air devices were littered all over Port Harcourt.

So because you were watching AIT and highlights shows does not mean others were not watching.

I said earlier that I watched the FA Cup final between Liverpool and Manchester United live on a Multichoice device in my neighborhood. We were watching live games of George Weah. Watching live games of Ajax. This was in 1996. They were families like the bosses of NAFCON and some multinationals then who had the big satellite dishes. This was between 1990-1992 era. Many followed euro leagues long before the late 90's.

The point is too simple.
