I remember most Tuesdays and Wednesday Evening every man, boy were all at viewing centers to watch Championship matches. The whole neighborhood will be quiet until a team scores but that was '97 and after. Icon4 is right, early 90's the majority got their sports info from second hand sources never live.

But also there were many who followed it by watching live games. As of 1996. Many were watching satellite TV. Lots of homes had satellite devices. Let alone bars, restaurants and hotel lobbies.

Yes he had a good season but go by Poland and Serbia match he still need to work hard to make the team cos playing in serial A cannot do it alone.

Joel Obi is not new in the Super Eagles, he has proven himself but the only thing that held him back is his injury woes. An inform Joel Obi who plays in the Seria A will definitely bench Onazi and scare Ndidi to his balls....By the way, he is a better ball player than Ndidi

Bellerin had only three call-ups from Lopetegui and never played for him. His snub was very expected.

You are not the whole Nigeria. I told you by 1996, Multichoice devices was rampant in a lot of homes in Port Harcourt. People in those houses were following Euro football. By 1997, people were hacking Multichoice devices and cable satellite free to Air devices were littered all over Port Harcourt.

So because you were watching AIT and highlights shows does not mean others were not watching.

I said earlier that I watched the FA Cup final between Liverpool and Manchester United live on a Multichoice device in my neighborhood. We were watching live games of George Weah. Watching live games of Ajax. This was in 1996. They were families like the bosses of NAFCON and some multinationals then who had the big satellite dishes. This was between 1990-1992 era. Many followed euro leagues long before the late 90's.

The point is too simple.

Port Harcourt is not the whole of Nigeria. That was not rampant in Lagos. Even those that had free to air had only very limited channels. The only major station we watched UCL (Which was the only live European league we watched) was AIT and some times NTA. And not Digital satellite TV that a vast majority of Nigerian didn't have then.

And at the bolded, what percentage of Nigerians had this privilege?

bragging about making it to the 2nd round? anyone saying that is just for saying sake. rohr have said it couple of times that he isn't expecting much from the team at the world cup but will take each match as it goes. they may be high hopes because of the teams current form and resurgence but notwithstanding even if the team crashes out from the group rohr will continue with his job. you don't build a team in less than 2 years and expect them to do wonders in a short period of time. this current super eagles is still work in progress with a lot of positives so disengaging rohr just because the team couldn't make it pass the group stage is indirectly disbanding the team and starting afresh with a new coach who will introduce a new pattern of play and his own choice of players. this have been the norm of our football for years and have slowed the progression of our apex team.

anyone who will ignore joel's talent and qualities should do at his peril. if not for injuries aside mikel, joel is the best we can boast of. even though his injury woes have slowed down his career he is still highly regarded in a decent like torino. rohr re-inviting him shows he love something about his game.

Mr man, everybody is different. My first soccer game of importance, was a game in Tunisia 94, where I think Yekinni scored a beautiful goal, the one in which he "height"(like we used to say then) the goal keeper in a one on one situation and then he finished it with his head, I was 8 years then. After that we played Ivory Coast, that one ended in penalty, I remember thinking the Ivory Coast team was better than the super eagles then. The Zambia game I only got the last few minutes because of NEPA. Fast forward to USA 94, by then I had already understood the concept of Soccer, the important players, Maradona, Batistuta before the game started and during the game, the names Mustapha Haji, Roberto and Dino Baggio, Martin Darlene, Bebeto, Romario, Dunga, LaLas, Escobar and a host of others.
So Mr man, every childs comprehension is different the other.

Chidozie Awaziem Rated Best Among FC Porto Loanees, Mikel Agu Also In
May 21, 201807

Super Eagles of Nigeria defender Chidozie Awaziem has been rated as the best player among players of Portuguese giants FC Porto who were sent out on loan.

Awaziem played 22 games in the French Ligue 1 with a goal to his name from his role as a central defender for Nantes in the just concluded ‎season in France.

The defender was thrice nominated in the team of the week in France, and also won the club player of the month award once aside been nominated five times for the award.

His rise in profile has also helped him cement a spot in the senior national team of Nigeria, where he is favourite to be at the World Cup following his inclusion in the 30 man provisional list of the Super Eagles.

Tipped to play a role for FC Porto next season he wasn’t the only Nigerian who got a fair rating among players of Porto out on loan as Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Agu who spent the season at Bursaspor was also mentioned.

Losing a meaningless friendly match against Serbia almost sent some folks to frenzy. Just imagine what happens if he doesn't reach, at a minimum, the quarter finals in Russia. The way our people think sometimes makes you wanna scream are you freaking kidding me!

Remember how they trashed and disgraced Clemence Westerhof for losing in the round of 16 - on our first attempt! Nigerians can be very funny people.

Omo, what other specifics do you need when we already have a confession from an insider?

Listen, soccer is now business - and we're talking about multi trillion dollar business. Hence, it's in FIFA's best interest that certain countries perform well to keep the money coming. And they would do everything within their powers to make that happen. Do you think that FIFA would be happy to see a World Cup final involving Nigeria and Panama? Or Senegal and Iran??

Why do you think that Real Madrid almost always get the easiest draw in the knockout stages Champions League? Do you think that it's merely by luck of the draw? Yea rite! It's a rigged system, bro grin

O pari

any intelligent person that follow your argument very well will notice your sentiment, you are a hardcore Barcelona fan and you are trying to convince your self that madrid has been favoured hence they are doing well

But bros a team that drew Tottenham,Dortmund in group stage never got an easy draw, played psg in second round then juventus, Bayern follows, abeg how are this matches easy and fixed.

if really UEFA wanted to fix the fixture, they will favour an el classico final, but i remember few seasons ago they draw Barcelona and Madrid in semifinal instead of "fixing" it to enable them play the final

The reason why you can't have panama and senegal final is because panama and senegal are not better team and better prepared to teams like Spain and Germany.

Typo. I have been writing about the Cable satellites devices earlier which became popular after the Multichoice devices in Port Harcourt. You can see from the quoted below.

TheGoodJoe:
I repeat. In Port Harcourt, Multichoice was rampant. A lot of people in my neighborhood had it and were following foreign leagues regularly. By 1997, people were hacking Multichoice devices and watching without paying subscription. That year, cable satellites beamed free to Air channels into people's homes. There was a large following at that time. Most bars in hotels showed these leagues regularly. So people claiming to follow top leagues in the mid to late 90's was true.

Guys I wrote this piece on my blog:

Who Will Make The Super Eagles 23-Man List For The World Cup?

Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has released the 30-man provisional list for the FIFA 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The list had very few surprises with inform forwards, Junior Lokosa and Simmy Nwankwo making the list. The squad is expected to resume camp on the 21st of May in Uyo. However, the final squad of just 23 players will be released on or before the deadline on June 4.

Today, we look at the possible 23 players who could make the Super Eagles squad going to Russia.

Possible 23 Man Squad Of The Super Eagles For The 2018 FIFA World Cup

Goalkeepers:
Gernot Rohr named four goalkeepers in his provisional list, with Dele Alampasu missing out on the list. Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Francis Uzoho, Daniel Akpeyi, and Plateau United shot-stopper Dele Ajiboye. Three goalkeepers are expected to make the list of 23.
I expect all, except Delete Ajiboye to make the final squad. The starting spot will be a battle between Uzoho and Ezenwa.

Defenders:
10 very good defenders were called up in the provisional list. Gernot Rohr will obviously name eight defenders in the final squad. Two players for each position, one as a backup. We already know the coach’s preferred back four of Shehu Abdullahi, Ekong, Balogun and Echiejile. Four more players will be added to this current ones, and two will be dropped. Players who are versatile will have an edge. I’m expecting Ebuehi, Omeruo, Awaziem, and Idowu to make the final list. Stephen Eze and Ola Aina might miss out.

Midfielders:
Nigeria’s midfielder position is up for grabs for only inform players. The friendly matches against Congo and England will play a part in deciding who makes the final 23 man list. 8 players were named in the 30-man provisional list, but 6 are likely to make the final cut. Mikel, Onazi and Ndidi already have their place in the squad after their strong showings in the qualifications. Uche Agbo and Mikel Agu the likely players to miss out on the final list, they have not done anything to cement their place in the National team

Forwards:
This is where the real competition lies. There so many in-form attacking options at the disposal of Gernot Rohr. The recent form of Simmy Nwankwo, Junior Lokosa and Kelechi Iheanacho will give the coach a serious selection headache. The versatility of the forwards and their performance in the friendly games will determine who makes the squad. The real competition will be between Moses Simon, Junior Lokosa and Simeon Nwankwo. Although I’m expecting the competition to be stiff, I expect Simeon Nwankwo to edge out Moses Simon and Lokosa, if he performs well in the friendlies.

The possible Nigerian 23 Man List For The World Cup

Goalkeepers:

Ikechukwu Ezenwa
Francis Uzoho
Daniel Akpeyi

Defenders:

Abdullahi Shehu
Tyronne Ebuehi
Elderson Echiejile
Brian Idowu
Chidozie Awaziem
William Ekong
Leon Balogun
Kenneth Omeruo

Midfielders:

Mikel John Obi
Ogenyi Onazi
Wilfred Ndidi
Oghenekaro Etebo
John Ogu
Joel Obi

Forwards:

Ahmed Musa
Kelechi Iheanacho
Victor Moses
Odion Ighalo
Alex Iwobi
Nwankwo Simeon

There could be a few surprises, so we might never know. But baring dips in form and injuries, this is the most likely 23 man squad. We hope the best players make the list and do Nigerians proud in Russia, come June
