Wait 10 years and much of the younger generation will know nothing about Yaya.
You are dodging my question.

I am not, I am simply using the same metric used by Nihilstjnr.

I think, Yaya has had a better career but Okocha is certainly an African legend in his own right.

Players like Okocha paved the way for the Yaya Toures of this world.

I do not believe, it is because of player.. It was a great goal but if he missed it, we would have queried him for not taking the chance earlier. We still celebrate the goal. It was a beauty.

Chukwueze created a chance out of nothing.. Usman already had a chance that could have been taken earlier and took extra touches. Thankfully, it came off.

You are right, We have a lot of talent. I hope, we mange it properly.

Are u saying the defender fell on his butt out of clumsiness?

Okocha was playing in Europe with Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbache and PSG. Eintracht Frankfurt was a top 5 side in Germany when Okocha was there.

In fact, Bolton was the first time Okocha was playing for a club that was not fighting for the league title.

.

I think you're mistaking Eintracht Franfurt for another club. Okocha was actually relegated with them. Apart from 1992 when they came 3rd, they never challenged for any league title. Btw this was the time when only the league winners qualified for UCL, so a 3rd place finish wasnt as important as it is today.

Also when he was in france, PSG were also not the PSG of today. That was the era of Lyon winning 6 or 7 straight league titles, and PSG neither challenged for, nor won a pin when JayJay was there.

Infact JayJay was discharged by PSG for free...aged 28, after being signed for 14m...and in a world cup year no less. The only club willing to take a chance on him were a freshly promoted club to the EPL.

We may look back at history with rose tinted glasess today, but sir, that man did not have the career he could have.

that shouldn't stop him from going to the world cup if he merits it....
I remember James was just in his early twenties in the last world cup where he shines for Colombia... same with sterling he played all the 3 lions matches and now I believe that experience will come handy in these year world cup....
same mistake keshi made for not taking kelechi to last world cup...
so please I will rather take nwakali to any of agbo, agu and even ogu.

How can Kelechi Nwakali merit going to the world Cup?

I thought we have agreed that the best have been selected from the top leagues in Europe?

Did Nwakali play in one of the top leagues in Europe?

Didn't he flopped in the Eredivise in the first half of last season before he was demoted to second division?

Was he even spectacular in the second division of Eredivise where he played in the second half of the season?

Was he the best Nigerian player in his role in a top league in Europe last season?

How can you set a standard in the morning and break it at will in the evening?

Or is the standard applicable to some players and not to some players hence the bending of rules for some particular players?

How can we tell if our best player in Europe would have performed better than Nwakali tonight if invited?

Hahahahahaha! People can deceive themselves ooooooo. grin

Who doesn’t know Okocha? Okocha is popular for how he stands out on the pitch not for the clubs he played. He was too magical not to be known. My nephews in London are 17 and 18, and they know him very well. These are boys who hardly come to Naija. Born and bred there

Nope, the same Frankfurt...

Before they were relegated, what were their positions?

3rd
4th
3rd
3rd
5th
9th
17th (relegation season)

Can you see what i am talking about? They were regular contenders before the slip and that ws because they sold some of their better players..

Throughout Okocha's stay in PSG, they played a European competition. I believe they were 2nd once.

He shot the ball right after he dropped his defender. The only extra touch he made was to put it on his left leg.

Bros, you are reaching and clutching at straws.

How many people today know about the Van Basten, Zico, Gerd Muller, etc? If you are not Pele or Maradona, only football people will know you. Anyone with a knowledge of football knows Jay-Jay.

There are certain things that guarantee immortality in the game - Trophies, and individual honours.

You're right that as we grow older, the memories fade. The records however dont.

100 years from now, a kid using the google equivalent of that era could be looking through a list of EPL winners and find Yaya Toure. Or perhaps via a list of past APOTY winners. Maybe UCL past winners.

To find jayjay, the same kid will need to have either arcane knowlegde, or may have to rely on blind luck to stumble accross his clips on that era's equivalent of youtube. Career wise, there are simply no trophies or awards alluding to the great talent he posessed.

This is a man who could have had it all...but didn't due to a nonchalant attitude to tactical football.

I'm not mad at that...just calling it as i see it

3rd isnt a 'title contending position' but for sake of this discussion, I will concede the point/

JayJay was there for only the last 4 of those seasons, I can see a steady decline

3rd
5th
9th
Relegation

I'm not making a direct correlation and blaming JayJay for that slump in fortunes

I'm only making the point that during his tenure at the club, Frankfurt were NOT a top top team. Not a team challenging for honours. At best a top half team. And this of course in a 18-team league.

Okocha was the 2004 Nations cup best player, he also won the Golden boot in that competition.

He was runner-up APOTY twice and won the BBC African Footballer of the Year twice.

He has been at the top of the game in Africa.

Okocha joined Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1991/92 season.

They were 3rd that season.

They were also 3rd in the 1992/1993 season

3rd
3rd
5th
9th
17th.

They were certainly contenders in the early 90s.

In 1995, Okocha and Yeboah were involved in a feud with manger Jupp Heynckes and that led to the fall of Frankfurt as those were their best players.

Please dont mention BBC african award.
Thats an award that's open to the voting public like BB Naija, not an award that is judged by football experts

Even that golden boot award was won on a technicality tbh, as he wasnt the only player to score 4 goals in that tourney

JayJay has never been at the top of the game in africa. He was a ball juggler and entertainer...not a footballer. He could have been, but he never was.

Yet he was runner-up for the best player on the continent twice.. Bros, you are not being honest. It is like saying Xavi was not one of the world best players even though he was 3rd multiple time.

I'm not being dishonest here.

How can you be top of the game as a runner up? That's an oxymoron.

Xavi wasnt the best player in the world...he was however the top midfielder in Europe.

If you told me Xavi was at the top of the European game in his peak, I would also reject that. If you said he was the top midfielder however...

JayJay wasnt even that. Never the top player generally or top guy in his niche. He wasnt even the top guy in super eagles.

I remember the very first time I heard the phrase 'play to the gallery', it was used to describe JayJay.#

I dont want to muddle this discussion up cos I feel like ive strayed a bit.

My point remains that if you compare Okocha's career to his team mate like Kanu for example, it becomes immediately apparent that JayJay was a massive underachiever...and this was due to his indiscipline on(and reportedly off) the pitch.

Bros calm down there. What were Maradona's accomplishments? How many Championships did he win ? How many world cups ? How many accolades ?? And his name is already over cemented. In African Football Jay Jay Okocha is a legend. Even your Yaya Toure is a big fan of Okocha, you dey there dey talk nonsense. Abeg make somebody ban all these against Naija pikins biko. Just joking oooo

But at the same time his career could have gotten a lot more milleage if he had taken the game more serious during the earlier stages of his career, still he is the most important, most loved and most known Nigerian football player EVER!!! Next is Kanu Nwankwo.
