The man is the HEAD of the family, he's the Senate President among Senators (Wife, Kids, grandkids etc) as far as the family is concerned. All other members of the family (wife and others) are subordinates but it doesn't make them lesser humans but only in leadership and authority in the home.

The military you made mention of deals with authority. The General is the boss while others are subordinate to him.
