Nigeria: Mikel Accepts Underdog Status for Super Eagles in Russia

By Samuel Ifetoye

Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, has accepted the team's underdog status as the Mundial gets underway in Russia, next month.

Nigeria, which is rated number 47th in the world by FIFA, is the least among other countries in Group D that include favourite, Argentina (fifth), Croatia (18th) and Iceland (22), and has been tipped not to qualify from the group.

"Honestly, people didn't expect us to qualify but we are off to Russia and now it's all about the rankings," the former Chelsea midfielder told BBC Sport.

"When you look at the group I'd say we are more than happy for people to write us off and very happy to be the underdogs.

"It takes the pressure off the shoulders of our young squad and we can go about our World Cup with humility, which is perfectly fine.

"Football is played on the pitch and not by rankings or permutations," Mikel Obi added.

Argentina beat Nigeria four times at the World Cup, which include 2-1 in 1994, 1-0 in 2002 and 2010, and the 3-2 result at the last World Cup in Brazil.

But the three-time African champions took their revenge when they defeated the Argentines 4-2 in a friendly in last year and a 1-0 victory over Poland on home soil.

According to China Super League side, Tianjin TEDA midfielder, "We've got a blend of experience and a young squad playing without fear but with passion, which is good for us on the road to Russia.

"We have friendlies against DR Congo (May 28), England (June 2) and Czech Republic (June 6) that will help us finalise our World Cup preparations.

"From the first game at the World Cup our target would be to keep progressing as a team and take it from there," Mikel said.

Eagles will play its first match at the Mundial against Croatia on June 16, after which she will meet Iceland on June 22 and then the two-time champions, Argentina, four days later.

super-eagles-players-get-simbas tvs motorcycle

Coach Gernot Rohr and a player of the Super Eagles are going to take home a motorcycle each after their friendly game against Congo DR on Monday in Port Harcourt, hotsportstv.com can report.

The powerful TVS Apache TRT 160 brand of motorcycles to be given away on the evening is courtesy of the SIMBA GROUP, the official tricycle and motorcycles partnering the Super Eagles to the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup.

“The SIMBA GROUP,, franchise owners of the TVS brand of tricycles and motorcycles in sub- Saharan Africa will be presenting these vehicles to Gernot Rohr and one player of the Super Eagles who distinguishes himself in the match against Congo as a way of supporting and encouraging the Nigerian team to great exploits at the World Cup

” As official sponsors of the team, it is the least we can do to offer our backing in the hope it will galvanise them to a great outing at the Mundial,” Jayesh told hotsportstv.com on Saturday.

The Eagles will also be expected to be escorted by a convoy of the branded vehicles as they leave for the Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport en route to Russia 2018 through England next Wednesday.

Bora had no plans for Eagles at ’98 World Cup –Taribo

Published May 27, 2018

Ex-Super Eagles centre-back Taribo West tells ’TANA AIYEJINA about missing out on the ’94 World Cup and his experiences playing at the France ’98 and Korea/Japan ’02 editions

Playing at ’98/’02 World Cups

That was my dream and the ultimate goal. It’s the highest stage in football, so it was a dream comes true for me because I had achieved one of my life targets playing at the World Cup. Representing your country is one of the greatest things that can happen to any footballer. I won an Olympic gold medal but playing at the World Cup was the ultimate goal.

US ’94 exclusion

I played some friendlies with the Eagles but I wasn’t sad because the ’94 team had won the AFCON; they already had a plan and a team for the World Cup. I didn’t have it in mind that I was going to be part of the team to the World Cup. I was invited and I was happy. I played friendlies and I was there to understudy players like Stephen Keshi, Chidi Nwanu, Emeka Ezeugo, Mike Emenalo. If it was based on quality, I would have been at the ’94 World Cup but having won the AFCON, they had a team already for the World Cup. But I used the opportunity to learn, I went through the programme of the coach and it was nice. My plan was to be amongst the players who would take over from the ’94 squad and I’m happy that’s what happened.

’98 W’Cup experience

It was wonderful but the only sad experience was that we had very serious problems with the administrators. During the competition, we had problems over unpaid bonuses; there was always distraction in camp and it brought about division in the team. Our opponents capitalised on it because when players are psychologically affected, it affects them on the field too. After Philippe Troussier qualified the team for the World Cup, he was sacked and they brought in Bora Milutinovic about three months to the World Cup. Bora didn’t prepare us for the World Cup. We all came back from our various clubs, we hit the camp, and there was no much training; everybody was relying on our club form. It shouldn’t have been so. For the World Cup, the preparations have to be adequate but Bora didn’t have plans for that. There was so much division and distraction and these affected us. We couldn’t give our best. That was one of the best sides Nigeria ever assembled but we were not prepared. There was also tribalism in selecting players. Jonathan Akpoborie was one of the hottest strikers in Europe; he should have been in the team. Before the second round game against Denmark, we were fighting with the federation over bonuses immediately after the Paraguay match. We were distracted, players were complaining, there was confusion and the result was the 4-1 defeat we suffered in the hands of Denmark.

Crying at ’02 W’Cup

It was the pain we went through to qualify for that World Cup. It was what happened at France ’98 that reoccurred at the ’02 World Cup. There was no team, no preparation; there was nothing. Football is a team work; so, I couldn’t combine my job as a player with that of the administrators. It’s not possible. England and Sweden were not exceptional. We knew we could beat both countries; it was very painful. The only strong team in our group was Argentina. So, I had no choice but to break down.

Sunday Oliseh betrayal

I didn’t betray Oliseh by playing at the ’02 World Cup because there was no clique dictating who should go to the World Cup or shouldn’t. I was supposed to be dropped but I was the best in the national team, Europe and in my club. So, there was no way they could have dropped me from the team, even though their aim was to do so. The new coach, Adegboye Onigbinde, wanted an overhaul in the team but I was outstanding. I didn’t have any agreement with anybody over whether I should go to the World Cup or not. I wasn’t happy that Oliseh, Finidi George and Tijani Babangida were dropped from the World Cup after being part of those that qualified the team, but I was not the one who would decide for the national team. So, I did not betray Oliseh. In fact, I was one of the people who stood behind him, and trying to stand with him cost me my place in the national team. After we lost against Sweden, there was a meeting that was held, that we should talk about the national team and the problems. I spoke and I asked why Oliseh, Babangida and Finidi were not part of the team? What I said didn’t only make me lose my place in the team, there was an instigation against me that it would be my last national team outing. So, fighting for Oliseh cost me my place in the national team.

WÇup Memories

My worst moment was in 2002 but best was during our qualification process (for Korea/Japan). We had good coaches who worked for the team. But the tournaments proper were sad, something not worth thinking about.

Egypt sorry sad

'Salah will miss World Cup' - Injury rules Liverpool star out for two months, claims Saudi sports administrator

Outspoken Turki Al-Sheikh claims that a shoulder problem picked up in the Champions League final will dash the international dreams of the Egypt star
Mohamed Salah will be sidelined for two months by the shoulder injury he sustained during Liverpool's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid and miss Egypt's World Cup campaign, according to Saudi Arabian sports administrator Turki Al-Sheikh.

Salah was substituted after 30 minutes of Saturday's showpiece encounter in Kiev, having grappled with Madrid captain Sergio Ramos and landed heavily on the turf.

Gareth Bale came off the bench to steal the headlines with a game-changing overhead kick after Sadio Mane cancelled out Karim Benzema's opener – Reds goalkeeper Loris Karius culpable for the latter as he was Bale's second seven minutes from time in a 3-1 Madrid victory.

I'm so much disappointed as you are. I supported Liverpool through out the match.

It is a bitter and very sad moment seeing your best player been injured intentionally. But you need to look at the larger picture. Teams do a lot of things that might not be fair to the opponent to edge their opponents. This is not the first time it will happen and it won't be the last.
Italy took out Henry and Zidane in 2006 before they could win the WORLD CUP. France took out Onazi so as to get edge over us. Neymar, and so on.

We have seen so many cases where players are brought on to draw foul off their opponents, diving etc. These things might be wrong but they are part of the BIGGER PLAN

Bigger plan abi? Where is fairness then? Why do we have centre referees? Is it not to create a balance and fair officiating of a game? Have u stopped to imagine what would happen if there are no referees and no linesmen? Then it might ad well be gladiators in the Coliseum! Blood and bones will fly everywhere.

My brother, such plans are devilish and needs to be condemned. Else we might as well just give the Trophy to the pre determined winner before any competition. No need for all the troubles. When did soccer become wrestling? Its slmost like players now have a way of consoling themselves that the worst that could happen is they taking one(yellow) for the team. Where is the fairness? Seriously these rules with holding of a player, hugging a player from movement in the 18 yard box and impeding a player should be reviewed. We are not watching fast and the furious.

The world is getting to a point where Good is bad and Bad is actually good! Referees need to do their freaking job!

At a point I hated the appointment of Pinnick, but I must say dude now seems like the best thing to have ever happened to Nigerian football, Admin wise. Kudos to the brains that brought Pinnick to the helm. I actually hated him for scuttling my brother's move to France when he was Delta FA chairman.

The truth about players selection for the WC is that it has become a norm for 1,2 or 3 players to be dropped due to injuries. So some of the players we think should be among the 7 to be dropped may actually make it, due to the likelihood of 1 or 2 of the supposed 23 failing a late fitness test.

Fingers crossed.
