I have an issue thats not related to this thread so I'll apologise for derailing in advance. I no know where else to get quality advice.

I have been with coy X for roughly 3 years, been stagnant with no growth. Few days ago, I received a call from someone, asking if I'll be interested in joining coy Y. I replied in the affirmative. Everything happened so fast and there's an offer on the table that's increasing my current salary by 176% and with a clear chance for career growth.

I have made my intention to resign known to coy X and they are offering to increase current salary by 136% and are virtually pleading I stay, promising growth and all that. Told them to give me sometime to think about it.

Me I need money badly and at the same time, still don't want to leave coy X on a bad note.

My people, wetin una go advice make I do.

It will largely depend on the sectors you are in but if its the oil and gas sector, you need to do your assignment very well on how healthy are both companies. Series of things happened during the last oil crash in which, people were getting higher offer and package upandan to lure people into their organizations and thereafter, those companies had to lay off highly paid employees or worse of it all filed for bankruptcy or closed down some productlines during the oil crises and had to reduce the headcount.
In conclusion, if i were to be in your shoe, i won't inform coy X about the offer i got from Y, i will leave them honorably and give them some other reasons to leave on a good note because i can always come back due to my good rapport with them if things don't work out as planned. Informing coy X about coy Y offer is like forcing them to do what they are expected to do which management hates and since you have toiled the path of informing them, your best bet is to leave and take chances. Permit me to share a friend experience, my padi used to Work for Baker Hughes in Gulf and during oil boom of 2014, he got a fantastic offer with higher coefficient in Halliburton SSA. He resigned from Baker and started his visa processing to SSA, before he could finalize his visa processing to SSA, the oil price start to tank and due to high cost of production in SSA, they had to shutdown projects and cancel some contracts which led to termination of my padi offer letter. The guy ended up loosing from both ends. Sir rationalmind, my humble advise is to go for coy Y since you already informed coy X about ur new offer and i can assure you that, the new "offer" given to you by coy X is a trap. If you get to coy Y, pls do ur best to learn fast and become an asset and indispensable to the organisation. There is sth we call LIFO-Last In First Out whenever there is a time to reduce workforce but if you are able to prove your onions in a little time, you will be save and if thereafter you figured out that, your new coy Y is not as healthy as claimed but tricked u in, kindly start a new aggressive job search as soon as possible. All the best in ur new challenges and company sir.

Okay. Just know that all that glitter is not gold. There's something called job satisfaction which might not necessarily be about big pay sometimes.
However, the shortcoming here was the fact that the current employer was aware that you wanted to leave. If you decided to stay, they'll find a way of dealing with you and still terminate your appointment either in the short or long run.
Therefore, I joined my voice, sorry my typing, oh sorry my opinion with others to advice you to move on.

The information provided is NOT enough to be able to provide you with good advice

Company Y made a promise, how good are they in keeping their promise? Yesterday I was discussing a guys situation similar to yours. He got an offer to go to Company Y with over 100% increment. He resigned to join Company Y only for Company Y to change the terms that they cannot pay what they have promised! He was made to swallow his pride and call the former company to withdraw his resignation letter. Because he was a good staff who resigned without burning the bridge, he was accepted back. Lesson: promises can change.

If you will leave Company X, don't base your judgement ONLY on the money. Does Company Y offer more challenges? Do they have better overall welfare package? Do they treat their staff with respect? Are they paying more to 'poach' a staff they've made no investment in? Are there training opportunities?

Apart from MONEY, what else don't you like about company X? In the industry what is the provision of company X compared to company Y? I can go on and on.

Conclusion: The information provided is NOT enough to make a judgement.

There are lots to put into consideration really.

@Wanajo. Exception can not be the rule. See the best thing is for the guy to move. My Guy stand a very high chance to be victimized both in the short or long-run. Exception do happens you cannot bank on it. Your resignation is enough to hanger some people and your salary increase is a threat to Management. Please move on prayerfully. All these advice would be helpful in making future decision.

All Ogas' have spoken well. My little contribution, go to Y company as explained earlier and invest the remaining 40% salary increase in Stock Market. You might end up buying company X later in the future with your Returns on Investment (ROI) grin

Great assessment Sir Wanajo.
This is why I insist its always best not to take decisions of this nature in a hurry.
He needs to put himself thru a thorough scrutiny and weigh both coys in proper balance to arrive at a favourable end.
...money should never be the sole basis for a switch. How any of the company's decided upon will 'impact on his person' is even far more important.
He needs to take his time.

But either way, I wish him well !!

It is not an exception. You don't know anything about Company X and Y to make an informed decision. It is what you know about company X and Y that will help you make a choice.

For example, will you move from SEPLAT to JAPAUL because JAPAUL is offering you double salary? Do you know whether Company Y is able to PAY what they are offering? Will you leave GTB to join a microfinance bank just because of better pay?

If the two companies are known, then you can evaluate the company to decide which one is BETTER. The corporate culture of the companies, their management etc should be considered.

There are many questions to be answered before making a decision. It is not all about 'immediate' CASH.
