Well, the argument is that Spain has always been the no mans land for the warring Barca and Madrid factions, and now all of a sudden, an active Real Madrid manager is in charge of Spain. The potential implications of that on the dressing room, are obvious to me, most especially in these days where Barcelona as a club seemed to be deeply involved in the political movement of the Catalonian secession.
Real Madrid are unofficially the Government team, so a Real Madrid manager running the squad could be interpreted by Catalan nationalists as just another example of Catalan oppression etc.


I believe that the argument I reposted, is somewhat backed by the press release from the Spanish FA which took pains to stress that the Spain Team is the team for “all Spaniards”

You make a great point about Pique, but don’t forget that the player himself recognised the conflict of interest during the Catalan independence crisis last year, and even offered to retire from Spanish NT if the FA decided he was a nuisance.

Of course, Pique being one of the biggest names in world football will be less dispensable than a Spanish coach who has yet to achieve anything substantial in his career, but the fact that Pique felt that he may be forced to retire over his political views shows that this was and is a pretty serious issue

I understand the politics and the issue of ethics surrounding the decision to sack lopetugui but I feel it a wrong decision football wise to sack a coach two days before the opener in the world Cup nevertheless the extent of damage would be determined by how deep Hierro was into Lopetugui's plan.

But I think the Spain Coach isn’t really there for tactics. Of course, he will pick a game plan and run drills etc, but these players are super elite. They can run the play.

I think the Spain coach’s job is similar to Zidanes at Madrid - Keep the peace, satiate the egos, and unite the factions, so that the world class talent can fully focus on their work on the pitch

Baba, this is not about emotional convictions about heritage and roots especially when speaking in public. If you are a dual citizen, I would hope you would not make the monumental mistake of not showing loyalty to the nation where you are a citizen.

Like said earlier, my disdain for their actions has nothing to do with their support for Erdogan's government (political positions differ) but to publicly say "My President" is flat out unacceptable and disrespectful to the office of the German Chancellor. As far the world is concerned, Ozil and Gundogan are Germans, consequently, loyalty should remain with Germany. If they are tired, they can revoke their citizenship and move to Germany.
