Awka is really beginning to be something else, I've said this several times that Awka is no longer that sleepy town of those days and it's already giving several cities in the SE including Onitsha a run for their money.
Proud of it though.

School Of Nursing Amichi Diocesan Hospital Upgraded To College Of Nursing Science
14 JUNE 2018

WRITTEN BY NJIDEKA OKOYE
School of Nursing and Midwifery of the Diocesan Hospital of Amichi has been upgraded to the College of Nursing Sciences with full accreditation by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

The Bishop Diocese of Amichi, Right Reverend Ephraim Ikeakor disclosed this while delivering his presidential address to the First Session of the Fourth Synod of Amichi Diocese held at St. Stephen's Anglican Church Osumenyi, Nnewi South.

Bishop Ikeakor who stated that the Diocese now has school of Nursing, school of Midwifery and school of Public Health, noted that full academic activities have commenced in the College of Nursing Sciences which he said at graduation the students will be issued with HND certificate. He added that PTS examination for the first batch of the students started on 4th June while Entrance examination into the college will hold from 23rd to 29th June 2018.

The Bishop said that in their resolve to have a first class College of Nursing Sciences, the Diocese has procured and installed a 300KVA transformer for steady electricity power supply in the College and Diocesan Hospital, adding that installation of facilities for uninterrupted internet services in the College and other institutions in the Diocese are ongoing.

Bishop Ikeakor listed new policy on burial and funeral ceremony in the Diocese to include that every deceased member of the Diocese must be buried within two months from the day the person died, all burial and funeral activities must be concluded within two days, approval for black or white mourning cloth for families that wishes to do so and that there should be no dancing with the casket by undertakers among others.

He explained that this is part of measures to curtail unwarranted and excessive cost of burial in the society.

The Bishop also announced that the Diocese will pay one year house rent and basic salary of the husband of a widow of any priest of the Diocese who died in active service until his right year of retirement and sponsor one of the children's education to university level in any state or federal owned university.

Speaking on the theme of the synod, “Thou shall not steal”, Bishop Ikeakor said that stealing has become national and international problem of epidemic proportion, adding that knowing Jesus Christ is the way out.

Bishop Ikeakor thanked Governor Willie Obiano for fulfilling his promise during the last synod of the Diocese of asphalting the premises of the Diocesan College which he noted was done solidly and of high standard, pleading to the Governor to assist in tackling Infrastructural challenges facing the school as a result of the upgrade of the College.

A host of Archbishops, Bishops and other members of the clergy including Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma of Enugu Ecclesiastical Province and Archbishop Professor Godwin Okpala of Niger Province who spoke on behalf of other Bishops.
Appreciation by clergy, their wives and other institutions in the Diocese fromed the highlight of the synod.

Senate Committee Visits Obiano, Commends Anambra Govt For Active Participation In National Housing Project

15 JUNE 2018.

WRITTEN BY KENECHUKWU OFOMAH

The Nigerian Senate has commended Anambra State Government for meeting its counterpart obligations for the siting of a National Housing Project in the State.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Senator Barnabas Gemade conveyed the commendation of the Upper Legislative House when he led some members of the committee on a visit to Governor Willie Obiano.

Government House Correspondent Kenechukwu Ofomah was at the Governor's lodge Amawbia where the Senators had lunch meeting with the Governor and reports that among other Senators on the entourage were the Member representing Edo South Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Mathew Urhoghide and his Imo North Counterpart, Senator Benjamin Uwajumogu.

Senator Gemade who spoke after the lunch meeting, said they were in the State to see for themselves, how work is progressing on three ongoing Federal Projects namely the National Housing Project, the Federal Secretariat and the Zik Mausoleum.

Noting that successive administrations at the Federal level had gone without paying attention to the housing needs of the people, Senator Gemade stated that it is the intention of the Buhari-administration to partner States of the Federation to undertake housing schemes across the state.

He however regretted that most states were not forthcoming in the partnership and commended Governor Obiano for his proactiveness in ensuring that Anambra State keys into the initiative to cater for the housing needs of the people.

Earlier while welcoming his guests, Governor Obiano said the state will continue to partner the Federal Government across productive areas that will have positive bearing on the lives of Ndi Anambra.

It will be recalled that Anambra has met its counterpart obligations, having provided the land for the project.

You reason like someone with brain trauma. Which enabling environment and infrastructure are you talking about? Anambra already has the best infrastructure and enabling environment for businesses to thrive, that's why the headquarters of Ibeto group, Cutix Plc, Adswitch Plc, Kotec group (parent company of Tummy-Tummy food industries) and many others are in Nnewi. In Onitsha, Africana-First Publishers (the third biggest book publishing company in Nigeria) have their headquarters. MBI Obosi, the only private-owned television station in the east is in the Onitsha area. And numerous other large and medium factories whose operational headquarters are in Onitsha. The issue with Onitsha is lack of academic environment. Something need to dilute its blue collar nature. If there is a university campus within the city limits it will influence the residents on how to act decent.
There is no packaging in Onitsha, 90% of the residents don't return after NYSC so there is dearth of mindset overhaul.
What sabmiller employees did at iyiowa taught me that educated minority can influence uneducated majority in greater length.

Anambra state need to take university campuses to Onitsha and Nnewi, if you visit Ekwulobia you will understand how Oko Poly students influence the locals
I love this post and I can identify with what u are saying very well.
The surprising thing is that onitsha indigenes are well educated. The influx of traders in the city and money has made them lax in planning on how to run this great city. The school need not be in onitsha, it can be in that town after mkpor.
I came from around oko and married to onitsha family but discovered over the yrs that majority of the indigenes prefer to live outside onitsha than in onitsha.I went on a summer holiday to my aunt house in onitsha when in sec school and hated the city with passion. But see me married to an onitsha family. Such is life. There is no calmness. The city master plan was a mess.
Don't worry, the face of onitsha will change but with gradual process. It's the federal government that is holding the city back and they know it.
I wonder what our politicians do in abuja

Anambra State Government says there is no going back on its July 1st deadline for ban on Okada in Onitsha and Awka.

Governor Willie Obiano stated this during the 2018 Annual Seminar of Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council held in Awka.

Governor Obiano explained that the July 1st ban will be for commercial motorcyclists in Onitsha and Awka and their neighbouring towns.

While noting that the State government is making alternative arrangements to provide more shuttle buses to cover as many routes as possible, Governor Obiano called on transporters to take advantage of the opportunity and invest in deploying shuttles and tricycles to complement government's efforts.

He said in considering the plight of Ndi Anambra who may be affected by the ban, his government has designed a hire purchase arrangement where they will be provided tricycles and shuttles and they pay in installments over a period of time.

The Governor who explained that the ban is solely in the best interest of Ndi Anambra and residents in the State, said it will help government decisively address cases of motorbike robbery in many parts of the State which has been on the increase in recent times.

He further said by 1st of August, this year, the State government will vacate the shanties located opposite the Onitsha prison because of the series of crimes reportedly perpetrated there.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the State Traditional Rulers Council and Traditional ruler of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, said the traditional rulers have a role to hold their communities in the line of development, peace and security, to make the job of governance less cumbersome for the government.
In his remarks, one of the participants, who is also the traditional ruler of Umueri, Igwe Ben Emeka, said the seminar is strategic as experiences shared among themselves, will help promote grassroot development as well as help preempt and forestall crises in the communities.

Onitsha was relatively well planned until it became an unregulated market town where anybody and everybody could do anything.

So if you want Onitsha to change you need far better organized business to locate there and not traders selling goods under staircases or in shacks. For that to.happen you need government enforcing order and not encouraging the primitive capitalism of a street and wheelbarrow economy.

That's the difference between an India and a China and is why the Chinese economy is 8 times the size of India. The Chinese think big and do not settle for cities where people can live anyhow like India. Their streets do not let cattle to sleep on them or tricycles to roam because they can't plan a proper transport system.

That is also why the Europeans are far more creative and innovative than the rest of the world. Just visit any European town, their shopping streets are orderly and attractive and is not an everyone affair. So you see people engaged in craft not retailing. Look at the cafés, restaurants, shops that they have. Those structures are infused with the skills of architects, interior designers, artists, equipment manufacturers, suppliers not loads of hastily built shacks with no toilet or plumbing at the side of the road announcing "food is ready".

The ANSG needs to get serious with our cities. They are not extensions of villages. People need to operate at a higher level of organization and productivity. Onitsha needs is to attract industry, upgrade it's wholesale markets and clean up the CBD so supporting services can come in.

Specifically the state needs to build more industrial areas in Onitsha equipped with power, roads and water. The city should have 1,000 factories. Its wholesale markets need to be incorporated to attract capital to upgrade with better design, conveniences, infrastructure for modern wholesale retail not ugly unpainted, unroofed blocks of concrete called shops. Then the government needs to enforce building laws, sanitation fees and fines, upgrade commercial streets with pavements, parking laws, better transport systems.

Onitsha is supposed to be a premier city in Nigeria not a theater of primitivity.

Onitsha operates an Open Air Market system of trade centres which were built a long time ago according to the trending designs then, we need to build new markets, either open air or indoor markets, with modern designs but, the problem is that there is no project of such currently on going or being planned for in either Anambra or any other part of Igboland. The new markets constructed by government in Anambra such as the new computer village and the ongoing market to add to the Eke Ukwu market, were/are all having the old open air market design, the only difference is that they are using aluminium roofs which will not rust in a long run. We also need to introduce flowers and trees in all of Anambra state, even if it involves the coming together of youths in the Universities to take up the project, we just need it. When you visit Lekki and Ikoyi residential areas in Lagos, you will find out that Onitsha, Awka, Nkwelle etc can boast of same type of beautiful houses, in fact, we even have more duplexes and mansions than Ikoyi and Lekki but, Ikoyi and Lekki still look more beautiful because of their green environment and tree lined streets accompanied with neat and well paved roads plus well painted fences and houses unlike Nkwelle that lacks paved roads and Onitsha with its old painted houses at upper Iweka and dusty roads without grasses talk less of trees. We need to plant trees and flowers in our cities now, let's not wait for government, let's just find a way to come together, contribute money to purchase 'fall/blossom trees' and flowers, get permission from the local government and start planting all over our cities.
