He was a false Messiah who deceived people who were looking for enlightenment. Jones was responsible for a mass suicide involving more than nine hundred followers in Jonestown, Guyana, 1978. His organization, the peoples temple started out as a church. His weapon was his charisma and his unrivalled ability to convince people

In a 1976 phone conversation with John Maher, Jones alternately stated that he was an agnostic and an atheist

Reverend Jones himself was an Agnostic Atheist, to be precise. I've heard a lot about the fictional deaths of Egyptian babies during the Exodus and how a god that doesn't exist is extremely evil. In 1978 at Jonestown, Jim Jones brutally poisoned and murdered 303 real children and their parents, for a grand total of 909 people.

Also the people of Jonestown were also Atheist. Here is the quote from Jones:

"Off the record, I don’t believe in any loving God. Our people, I would say, are ninety percent atheist." ~ Rev. Jones

Jones subscribed to popular love philosophies:

"Well, thank you for the feedback, ‘cause, I must say, I felt somewhat hypocritical for the last years as I became uh, an atheist, uh, I have become uh, you— you feel uh, tainted, uh, by being in the church situation. But of course, everyone knows where I’m at. My bishop knows that I’m an atheist. He— He knows that I— I— I recognize only love, when I say— I’ll say, "God is Love"— well, you heard my preaching. Jim Jones was a Marxist and Marxists are atheists.

His leaked FBI files which I chanced upon some period ago exposed it all.

However a few extracts are mixed in with the link I just posted as the write up borrowed some authoritative information from there.

Do not be deceived by the Reverend title he had, that was before he became an atheist and since he still had a congregation, the title stuck but he was dedicated to making his congregation atheists like he was and he succeeded and he even confessed to that when he said his congregation were 90% atheist.

This is so true, whether he's an atheist/theist is beside the point

The main point is that his movement was either religious from the onset or became one as it grew or moved from one idea of religion to another. he used the same tricks used in religions to brainwash his members into killing themselves. There's no way this can actually work on a critical thinker who questions religious claims like the average Nairaland atheist who's irreligious. Jones became their "Messiah" who would save them from the evils of capitalism if they believe in him hard enough. sounds like a certain character from the Jewish mythology, doesn't it?

Whether Jones is an atheist/theist, religion still gets all the blame as an atheist can in fact be religious and incidences like this are one extra reason to be an Antitheist who sees religious ideas and its uses as nonsensical, something that should be pushed back upon, fought tooth and nail and gotten rid of systematically

In 1956 he was ordained. In 1976 he confessed with his own mouth that he is now an atheist/agnostic and atheist and his wife confirmed it in 1977.

In 1978 he orchestrated a mass suicide. From 1956 to 1976 which is about 20 years he never had a record of such a thing but within 2 years of his becoming an atheist, he became nihilistic and made sure his members bought into his nihilism and committed mass suicide.
