The Academic Staff Union of Universities ( ASUU ) has cautioned the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board ( JAMB ) to stop exploiting Nigerians in its drive to remit impressive revenues to Federal Government ’s coffers .
ASUU President , Professor Biodun Ogunyemi , who stated this in an interview in Abuja , accused JAMB of profiting from exploiting Nigerian students and their poor parents , adding that the board was charging more than what was required to conduct the examination .
JAMB had on Sunday announced that it would remit N7 .8 billion to the Federal Government as surplus generated from the conduct of its 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination ( UTME) .
Cumulatively , the board has remitted over N15 .6 billion to the Federal Government in less than two years .
Ogunyemi said by remitting N 7.8 billion to the Federal Government , as proceeds from UTME application forms in 2018, JAMB had become a revenue-generating agency.
He added that JAMB as a government agency was not set up for profit making, but to promote educational development of young Nigerians in pursuit of higher education and professional careers .
His words: “We said it last year when they said they remitted about N 5 billion, but this time around , it is remitting over N 7 billion; is JAMB now a profit making organisation? , he queried.
Ogunyemi accused the JAMB Registrar , Professor Ishaq Oloyede , of trying to use remittances as an avenue to create the impression that he was an icon of probity and integrity.
Speaking, President, National Association of Nigerian Students ( NANS ) , Danielson Bamidele , appealed to the Ministry of Education to reduce the cost of purchasing JAMB forms .
He said there was the need for JAMB to focus more in conducting a credible examination for students seeking admissions into tertiary institutions instead of the emphasis on remitting revenue to the Federal Government .
Bamidele also sought an extension of the validity of UTME results to at least three years .
Responding to ASUU ’s comments , JAMB Public Relations Officer ( PRO ) , Fabian Benjamin , said the remittance was made possible by the board ’s prudent management of resources.
The JAMB spokesman, who disclosed that UTME registration fee was one of the cheapest globally, however, assured Nigerians that it would not increase the fee in the next five to six years.

Lol cheesy@ASUU....
The students should come first before money or profit making truly but is this the same ASUU that we've known all these years or another one?!

Cos it is surprising to see JAMB remitting the amount of money in 2 years that was not remitted to the Government for the past 16 years!
In sane countries, questions will be asked why it is so.
But in Nigeria, 'some' youths never ask such questions.
They divert there energy to frivolous activities.
Corruption has become a normal thing to them.
Guess ASUU are no more getting their cut in the deal anymore!
Same ASUU that have refused to cancel post-ume fee in universities!
Misplaced priority!

One of the problems we are facing in this era of social media is lazy reportage/journalism. The OP, did not care to investigate how much the JAMB fee was before Prof. Oloyede's appointment neither did the OP tell us how JAMB generated the monies. Is it by UTME exam fees only? important question:
-Is there a remarkable increase in the number of people that sat for UTME exams now when compared to the past years?
-A comparative analysis of the students that sat for the exams and fees remitted by the agency over the last 5 year.

Measuring the success of JAMB by the amount of revenue generated , is like measuring the success of a woman's pregnancy by the size of the doctor's fee.

Whatever happened to ease and convenience ? Customer satisfaction ? Raising academic standards ? These are very far from the minds of the government and JAMB officials

Is Jamb on a newly found aggressive monetization policy or is the body becoming more honest in financial dealings? I don't know how much they have charged in the last 3 years but I believe the charges wouldn't be too different from those of the past 5-7 years. Any increase in charge is definitely not worth the 15.6 billion they have remitted in 2 years.

So why is the ASUU leadership looking for issue where there's none? What happened to just praising Jamb's honesty and highlighting that the previous administrators have been dubious,? Why is ASUU being petty? Funny how some people have made corruption seem normal. So now it's not about praising the financial honesty but about warning against becoming a profit-driven organization? These profs can't even bring themselves to ask publicly what has been happening to the billions that should have been remitted before now?

Even if u want to warn Jamb about their "profit policy", this isn't the way to do such. You shouldn't attack the man that's miraculously so honest about the funds by saying that he wants to prove that he can be trusted with money blah blah blah. No be una same professors dey chop school money for campuses?

If anyone is to caution the FG against exploitation, it should never be ASUU. ASUU has become so useless and discredited that OAU pulled out of ASUU.

That being said, this commercialisation nonsense by FG agencies started with FRSC under Chidoka. An agency would leave its core functions and be operating like NURTW.

How can you measure the Sucess story of Jamb under the new registrar simply based on the amount they are remmitting within taking cognisance of how much candidates are paying under previous registrar....not to talk of the introduction of ICT in the general conduct of their operations. Oloyede had done well and must be commended pls...we can only ask that he tighthen the loose ends.
The right question everybody should be asking is where are the unreported/unremitted excess from the previous registrar administration?

People are not getting the gist here.
Has the present leadership of JAMB administration just increased the fee they collect or it has been the same fee before they got there?
Where have been all the excesses all these while.
A simple question ASUU should have been asking

Don't mind them. They'll prefer the monies where stolen among Jamb officials and a few million Nairas remitted like has been the norm in the past.

The same ASUU that have refused to cancel post-ume fee in their various universities.

Now is the day break.
I made a thread here when the UTME fee was announced https://www.nairaland.com/4255607/call-downward-review-utme-fee on why there should be a downward review of the UTME fee and other sundry charges.
We don't need to wait till next year to begin to raise grievances. Let's start now.

Pray, what's ASUU doing about the Post Utme exploitation happening under its nose. Any institution who feels that JAMB hasn't done a good job should be at liberty to conduct her own assessment at no extra burden on the already exploited candidates.

Let's not even talk about the Acceptance Fee yet

I don’t want to believe this came from ASUU. If true then our university needs a thorough cleanse. A professor sounding so empty and illogical? Is JAMB fee more than it was in 2015 and by how much?
This fool of a professor never raised issue of excessive charge when the body was remitting nothing. What a mess we are in, in this country. Shame on our universities.

Many of the universities are changing more than JAMB for post UTME! May God come to our rescue and destroy these retrogressive elements masquerading as intellectuals.
