ITAKPE-AJOKUTA-WARRI RAIL LINE "The Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri rail line is passing through the following communities in Delta (Aladja, Urjevwu, Orhowhorun, Agbarho, Ovwori, Okpara Inland, Abraka and Urhonigbe), in Edo (Idumuesah, Ewossa, Agbor, Ekpon, Igbanke, Isanlu, Ekehen, Uromi, Ubiaja, Aigere, Uzanu and Agenebode) and in Kogi (Nashe, Ajaokuta Steel Complex, and Itakpe). I think the Federal Government needs to work with the LGs in these area on the site development and land-use planning for this corridor to prevent uncordinated haphazard development. A future extension of the Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri line northwards by about 200km will take it through Lokoja, Abaji, Gwagwalada, Kuje up to Idu linking up with the existing Abuja-Kaduna line and the planned Kaduna-Kano line. With the dredging of the River Niger from Bifurcation at Forcados up to Warri, it means in not too distant future, goods coming into Warri Port will find their way all the way to Lokoja, Abuja, Kaduna and Kano. Onitsha is just about 70km east of Agbor, the design of the Second Niger Bridge has already been modified to include a rail line at the centre, this means with some additional effort, a 70km rail line will link Agbor and through the Second Niger Bridge to the main Market in Onitsha. There is an existing unused rail bridge already between Ajaokuta and Itobe, with some effort (not up to 5km of rail), the main rail can be linked with the bridge into Kogi East (servicing nearby communities such as Idah, Ayangba, Dekina and Ankpa). There is the Lagos-Calabar Coastal line (under project preparation) that will take off from around Shagamu along the on-going Lagos-Ibadan line, passing through Benin, Warri, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, Aba, Uyo and Calabar. There is the planned Kano-Maiduguri line passing Dutse, Potiskum, Damaturu and Maiduguri, which will be sequenced after the Kaduna-Kano line is completed. There is also the Kano-Dawanau-Jibiya line passing through the Dawanau (the largest grains market in West Africa) and Jibiya to complete the LAKAJI corridor. The government is negotiating for the contract of Port Harcourt to Maiduguri which is about 2,000 kilometres with a spur from Owerri through Nnewi and Awka and then from there to Abakiliki, while proceeding on to Gombe with a spur to Yobe, and through Yola, and then to Borno. There is work going on. Let's just be patient!" 21 Likes 3 Shares

Ofodirinwa: You lack what they call economic common sense Those cities are agricultural areas Those cities are where most of the so called developed areas get taxes from Know single city stands on its own , they are all Nigerians It will also help in rural urban migration They will also feel the sense of belonging The list is endless Mr economist 244 Likes 20 Shares |

Ofodirinwa: If you say they are dead and unproductive then know this, development and a thriving economy comes when the enabling environment is given/created. Linking States makes for movement of goods and people very easy and this means one can live in Abuja and work in Lagos or live in Lokoja and work in warri etc. That is how development and a thriving economy is achieved. I just educated you. No need to thank me. 180 Likes 14 Shares |

Ofodirinwa: Honestly, Apart from Warri, I have no idea why those other cities have railway networks when far much more economically vibrant cities are ignored. Nigeria, continue shooting yourselves in the foot. Continue cutting your nose to spite your face. 3 Likes 5 Shares |

Ofodirinwa:Keep exposing your ignorance. The easiest way to open up a rural community or an agrarian one, is to provide good roads, rail systems and various modes of transport. It is known as provision of 'access,' or facilitating 'accessibility.' That is what opens the eyes of travellers and commodity traders, to the potentials of such areas. Before you know it, the places you thought were 'dead,' would start thriving, and become centres of commerce. Not only that, by linking those rural areas to commercial townships and capital cities, you reduce travel time between those locations. People might decide to build houses in those rural areas and commute into town on a daily basis, courtesy of the railway services and/or roads, that now pass through there. How did areas like Mararaba, Karu, Nyanya etc develop? Were they not rural dead areas on the outskirts of Abuja, that got opened up due to the network of roads passing through those places? It became cheaper for workers to live there, and commute to the Abuja city centre on a daily basis. Compare those districts now, with they way they used to be 5-10 years ago, and you would see a massive difference. Finally, the railway track or line has to pass through certain communities or areas, because it is being constructed on land and not in the air. So no matter how you dislike the thought, some communities that you feel are 'dead areas,' would still have to host the railway tracks, because it cannot be built in outer space. You need to focus on the bigger picture, as this same railway line would connect Delta State straight to the Middle Belt, and eventually to Abuja, while reducing pressure on the bad roads in that axis. Passengers would no longer have to suffer while commuting through those bad roads, as there would now be a better alternative. 106 Likes 9 Shares |

I live around the axis, this railway has been in existence even before my birth and as far as I am concerned no renovation has been done on it so far. We can't go far by saying we did what we didn't do. |

Eastern and western linew fall under narrow gauge lines that G.E is rehabilitating. The federal government is looking for more locomotives to ger eastern line up and running aswell. There are dry ports that are going to be built in Jos and Maiduguri so that means these guys will be patronizing the ports in Rivers. This one is the most important economicly. It would connect the most productive ends of the country. I already reposted a seeking alpha article talking about it. There is the Lagos-Calabar Coastal line (under project preparation) that will take off from around Shagamu along the on-going Lagos-Ibadan line, passing through Benin, Warri, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, Aba, Uyo and Calabar.
