Here is a report : Excitement as some Delta youth see a train for the 1st time. Arrival of the 1st passenger train to Delta state yesterday. It took off from Itakpe, Kogi State travelled through a 320km rail track through Adogo Ajaokuta Agenebode Uromi Igbanke Agbor Finally, Warri. https://mynationnews.com/2018/07/28/excitement-as-some-delta-youth-see-a-train-for-the-1st-time-video/

I may not be a fan of PMB or GEJ, but at least, this shows some form of progress in the rail sector. undecided

Most of you just criticize without knowing anything. The railroads were designed to link all the steel plants and the mines. Steel production is heavy duty stuff you can't easily convey by the roads, hence the railways. What is idiotic about this?

That rail line has always been there. Nothing is wrong with that rail line. I don't understand what they really mean. Are they trying to maintain the rail line for use again? Or what? That line passing through agenebode has been there for years now....not been used.
So don't be deceived, they are not building a new rail line.

Honestly, Apart from Warri, I have no idea why those other cities have railway networks when far much more economically vibrant cities are ignored.

The rail line was built to over 90% completion almost 20 years ago and then abandoned to rot away with several parts vandalised over the years. It was intended to carry raw materials between 2 steel cities. But now it has been completed; the vandalised sections rebuilt and stations built along the way (so I hear) to make it also cater for passenger traffic.

I wanted to ask if they built a new rail line. Cos i remember during my pre-degree days at DELSU (2003) the rail lines were newly completed and i had a friend whose lodge was not too far from the railway tracks close to the river by Ajalomi (dont know if i spelt it correctly)

Where new tracks built or they renovated or started using those ones.

But we must give kudos to the present govt if they started using it though.

Keep exposing your ignorance. sad The easiest way to open up a rural community or an agrarian one, is to provide good roads, rail systems and various modes of transport. That is what opens the eyes of travellers and commodity traders, to the potentials of such areas. Before you know it, the places you thought were 'dead,' would start thriving, and become centres of commerce. wink

Not only that, by linking those rural areas to commercial townships and capital cities, you reduce travel time between those locations. People might decide to build houses in those rural areas and commute into town on a daily basis, courtesy of the railway services and/or roads, that now pass through there. undecided

How did areas like Mararaba, Karu, Nyanya etc develop? Were they not rural dead areas on the outskirts of Abuja, that got opened up due to the network of roads passing through those places? It became cheaper for workers to live there, and commute to the Abuja city centre on a daily basis. Compare those districts now, with they way they used to be 5-10 years ago, and you would see a massive difference. undecided

Finally, the railway track or line has to pass through certain communities or areas, because it is being constructed on land and not in the air. So no matter how you dislike the thought, some communities that you feel are 'dead areas,' would still have to host the railway tracks, because it cannot be built in outer space. sad

You need to focus on the bigger picture, as this same railway line would connect Delta State straight to the Middle Belt, and eventually to Abuja, while reducing pressure on the bad roads in that axis. Passengers would no longer have to suffer while commuting through those bad roads, as there would now be a better alternative.

You are your father's son.

@Ofodirinwa,
A railway connecting 2 steel cities is what you call dead?... Delta steel and ajaokuta steel both need this rail to return to life, and if both steel plants return to life , you really think Ajaokuta will be a dead city?... By the way I'd take it that your reference to Warri as a dead city was a 'slip of hand'.

Meanwhile, no words for the fellow below who just termed people brain dead for this; his words already speaks volumes of the status of his own brain.

This rail line was built decades ago to transport iron ore from Itakpe near Okene to Aladja steel rolling mill. It's a product of shagari government. The conversion of an already existing line to mass transit purposes must not be used to mask the neglect of the steel industry. Development worldwide is tied to iron and steel. Since we have it, should we be importing it??

ITAKPE-AJOKUTA-WARRI RAIL LINE

"The Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri rail line is passing through the following communities in Delta (Aladja, Urjevwu, Orhowhorun, Agbarho, Ovwori, Okpara Inland, Abraka and Urhonigbe), in Edo (Idumuesah, Ewossa, Agbor, Ekpon, Igbanke, Isanlu, Ekehen, Uromi, Ubiaja, Aigere, Uzanu and Agenebode) and in Kogi (Nashe, Ajaokuta Steel Complex, and Itakpe). I think the Federal Government needs to work with the LGs in these area on the site development and land-use planning for this corridor to prevent uncordinated haphazard development.

A future extension of the Itakpe-Ajaokuta-Warri line northwards by about 200km will take it through Lokoja, Abaji, Gwagwalada, Kuje up to Idu linking up with the existing Abuja-Kaduna line and the planned Kaduna-Kano line.

With the dredging of the River Niger from Bifurcation at Forcados up to Warri, it means in not too distant future, goods coming into Warri Port will find their way all the way to Lokoja, Abuja, Kaduna and Kano.

Onitsha is just about 70km east of Agbor, the design of the Second Niger Bridge has already been modified to include a rail line at the centre, this means with some additional effort, a 70km rail line will link Agbor and through the Second Niger Bridge to the main Market in Onitsha.

There is an existing unused rail bridge already between Ajaokuta and Itobe, with some effort (not up to 5km of rail), the main rail can be linked with the bridge into Kogi East (servicing nearby communities such as Idah, Ayangba, Dekina and Ankpa).

There is the Lagos-Calabar Coastal line (under project preparation) that will take off from around Shagamu along the on-going Lagos-Ibadan line, passing through Benin, Warri, Yenagoa, Port Harcourt, Aba, Uyo and Calabar.

There is the planned Kano-Maiduguri line passing Dutse, Potiskum, Damaturu and Maiduguri, which will be sequenced after the Kaduna-Kano line is completed.

There is also the Kano-Dawanau-Jibiya line passing through the Dawanau (the largest grains market in West Africa) and Jibiya to complete the LAKAJI corridor.

The government is negotiating for the contract of Port Harcourt to Maiduguri which is about 2,000 kilometres with a spur from Owerri through Nnewi and Awka and then from there to Abakiliki, while proceeding on to Gombe with a spur to Yobe, and through Yola, and then to Borno.

There is work going on. Let's just be patient!"

@op. Urhonigbe is in Edo State

You lack what they call economic common sense

Those cities are agricultural areas

Those cities are where most of the so called developed areas get taxes from

Know single city stands on its own , they are all Nigerians

It will also help in rural urban migration

They will also feel the sense of belonging

The list is endless

Mr economist

And apart from that, if you take a look at the map, the railway route commences from Warri.Well not really Warri, but Aladja, where you have the Delta steel complex, look further up , you see Ajaokuta where we have another steel company. Now add the oil and gas the larger Warri is known for, and you'll be looking at a railway line that is poised to be massively used to haul iron and steel products as well as petroleum products, so don't mind the other poster you responded to for he is plagued by acute ignorance
