I have said it several times, the average Nigerian lacks empathy and compassion for their fellow human being. The average Nigerian is wicked and stone-hearted irrespective of their career profession. So Nigerian doctors are no different. They are a product of their environment. A dysfunctional environment where no one cares. A dog-eat-dog environment.

I appreciate your very sincere concerns but i work in an environment where safety of the worker is topmost. I used to have a wrist reaction everyday cos im allergic to the powder in gloves back home but thats a thing of the past now.
If my safety and wellbeing can be that important, imagine what that of the patient will be like.

A lot of Nigerian doctors are so full of themselves. They just want to prescribe drugs or whatever it is, for you without actualy telling you what is wrong you. When you ask, they shut you down like you're asking too many questions. I had a medical problems for years and after moving from Fderal Medical center, LASUTH and a couple of private hospitals, i just decided to heal myself instead. In the government hospitals, it takes a lot of time to really get anything done. I went for consultation, the doctor talked to me rudely and consequently directed me to the Endocrine department and those ones gave me an appointment to come back in 3 months time. I couldn't wait.

Reddington and a couple of other high end hospitals were only interested in collecting my money. Just speaking with a doctor for 5 minutes will deduct 30k for your account and they make sure that they tell you to come back for follow up consultation thereby bleeding your account without profering any solution.

Other cheaper hospitals only know about Malaria and Typhoid. Infact, they should just change the names of their hospital to "Malaria and Typhoid center" instead of hospital. Even after carrying out a test in Clinix (one of the best dignostic centers), the doctor said i should go and redo the test but this time in a diagnostic center that he owns or co-owns.

O boy, no time to waste time. I just decided to do my own research on google based on my symtoms and i'm getting better.

just the smallest of examples my brother. if you had to care for people and you cant even talk to those that sent you to medsch cos of your work for days, youd understand. When you go home and its like its christmas. When you care for other peoples kids but yours is sick at home and you cant do anythin for your own kid. when you have to spend you own resources on people who will still end up saying doctors are this and that. When you go around begging for materials and you make enemies of other health workers cos of care of the patients you dont even know and they still insult you anyway. when your own parents are dying and you care for other peoples parents and still get insulted anyways.

A consultation with the doctor is not the time to tell your life story. Sometimes a doctor will ask a patient a simple question and he or she starts by telling an irrelevant story that happened decades ago. Many of these stories can be misleading and thats why the doctor asks specific questions. The aim of these questions is for proper diagnosis.
I agree doctors should be patient enough to listen to and counsel their patients and i think they do when neccessary.

in Nigeria we don't have medical records. a brief personal background will do as a substitute.

It is really a sad situation. I still remember the first and only time I visited UNTH, Enugu with my late brother. To do an x ray there was a herculean task. A colleague of mine once had an accident and was in the teaching hospital at Nnewi. I was shocked to see how dirty the toilet there was when I visited. The truth is that the quality of service in most of our hospitals is very poor. That is one of the reasons for the relatively low life expectancy in Nigeria today.

Don't be selfish/myopic/insensitive! The fact that you have one doctor relative doesn't invalidate a lot of other people's experiences! Some people have just narrated experiences where loved ones died due to negligence & bad attitude of their doctors & you dey here dey yarn wetin I no know! Who be this??

Obviously you don't know much about how government hospitals run and you did not attempt to find out despite your interest in writing a thesis about them. Your continuous reference to consultation fee is an example of your ignorance. Also, how do you expect Nigerian doctor that have to diagnose without necessary state of the art facilities in place to call out the cause of your ailment through a phone call...im be babalawo so? You cannot afford to spend the whole day in a doctors cubicle or maybe office because there are over 20-50 more patient he will attend to after you some with complicated issues. As for man no man, how do you expect a poorly paid doctor to assist his or her relatives or neighbors? Sorry for what you went through sis, as some of your points are true more are false.
Most of this facilities in government are outdated or not functioning, you can count the number of MRI n CT machine we have in this for the whole population, in the absence of these, these people will have to go through stress using crude means, and that suggests why most doctors make use of any opportunity to leave this country.
Don't forget that these people are also human beings that have family, some people will talk to a married man anyhow thinking he should be calm.
The government in Nigeria frustrates the doctor, johesu will frustrate so also fellow citizens, the main reason some doctors have not travelled out just to remain patriotic, they will come and lash the doctors again.

It's unfortunate that you had some bad experiences with your encounter with some doctors. It is sad to see the deplorable state of the health care system in Nigeria, and yet nothing is done. Budget allocation to health is approximately 7%, against the Abuja declaration to fund healthcare with 15% of annual budget. I am not justifying the poor communication of some doctors, but just giving this for a general view on the healthcare system.
Back to OP, it is good you acknowledged some good encounters with doctors. There's no problem with any doctor asking you questions and listening to make a diagnosis, however one should also be free to express himself even outside the questions posed by the doctor. It would be doubtful to believe any doctor would tell a patient to SHUT UP! while he/she's explaining her symptoms. I am not defending any 'arrogant' or 'boastful' doctor, perhaps it is individualistic, and not professional, and shouldn't be!
OP, from your story, I can imagine you have been mostly seeking tertiary healthcare services (teaching hospitals); and the few private hospitals you visited, might as well be run by one of the specialists in the teaching hospitals.
OP, you will agree that the conditions in teaching hospitals are different from private clinics, in terms of patients load, care, etc. A doctor should not rush you out of her clinic despite the long waiting queue, which by the way, you witnessed. Although some people will say they are stressed and worn out, which should also be put into consideration since they are human. It will be nice if patients (some highly-placed/their relatives/journalists etc) also raise these issues for the MD, or whoever that is incharge of recruiting to increase the number of working staff ( nurses etc inclusive). Those guys in teaching hospitals are being overworked. Nigeria falls below the WHO critical line for doctors, nurses and midwives. Simply put, the burden on the healthcare professionals is increasing especially with their massive exodus abroad.

If every sector is allocated recommended % of National budget I doubt if health will get one kobo before the available % is exhausted. How about making judicious use of the 7% allocated, I can attest 5% will be lost / consumed / wasted to corruption abi all those doctor making noise for 15% are not Nigerians.

All systems in Nigeria need overhauling, not just the health sector. A lot really need to be done.

I avoid hospitals but recently had to go due to someone close to me being sick. Private hospital doctors look as if in for the salary on their toes when the owner is around. Publuc hospital doctors are like out to experiment on patients, judge and prophesy ( we knew this patient wont make it) as such don't render proper treatment.. they generally seem successful clean and comfortable. Nurses and doctors in the public sector seem to be having a power struggle . The nurses will say to fix a needle in the patient was their job but bcause the doctors wanted extra allowances took over the task. If a doc cant be gotten to do it the patient is left to die or at their peril unless a sympathetic nurse will doit
