israelmao:
Our healthcare system is becoming worrisome every second not because of lack of manpower but due to the brain drain resulting from poor working conditions for medical practitioners and poor facilities,no wonder we have thousands of patients to one doctor which is an absolute anathema in an deal society.

You can imagine the mentality of a so-called health minister and a medical doctor for that matter. He should know better that the major problem affecting the health sector is the dearth of health workers and brain drain due to obvious reasons.

The annoying thing is that his suggestion did not address the question asked about residency programme for doctors in different specialties.
His opinion that all doctors must not practice but some can become farmers is even an insult to people involved in farming.

The fact is that there is nothing wrong for practising doctors to be involved in farming but one thing he should know is that farming itself has become a risky investment in Nigeria due to the problem of herdsmen. For example, I know of a doctor colleague who lost over 3million Naira in rice farm investment in Benue State, January this year due to Fulani herdsmen destruction. Does he expect this doctor and some other people of various disciplines to be encouraged to invest in agriculture in such vulnerable states?.

I don't blame him for his way of thinking but I blame his employers for making him a minister of health because it is obvious that he doesn't know his job description as it relates to providing a better health care system in Nigeria.

When we don't have enough doctors in the country, health minister is telling the few we have to go and farm. Who did this to Nigeria?

The most annoying thing is that it took the president several months to appoint him as a minister of health in addition to some other ministers that have disappointed Nigerians.

Nigeria will hopefully get it right someday!

It shall not be well with Professor Isaac Adewole, the Nigeria Minister of Health and all his generations for seeing his professional colleagues and other health workers in this light. If we were in a sane clime, the call for his resignation would really matter to the citizenry; but may heaven in which he hopes and earth on which he operates judge him and all the bunches of incompetent cankerworms in the helm of affairs of Nigeria.
God have mercy on Nigeria and grant us Biafra

If by choice, no problem. But in a country where we have abysmal doctor/patients ratio and virtually no general practice in most communities, how can a minister of health and a medical prof be so clueless? He's a disgrace to healthcare, himself, academia and Buhari's government. shocked shocked

This man could have gone about introducing a massive General practice/family medicine system that will mop up unemployed or under-employed young medical graduates. A 2-year general practice residency program rolled out nationwide with state governments. That way district hospitals & teaching hospitals will be freed up to handle more serious cases and those referred from general practitioners. And we also need mental health practitioners in large numbers right now.

You wonder what difference health ministers have made over the last 20 years. No new or innovative ideas to fix the health sector.

Why won't he say so? He has achieved many things through this this profession. During the millitary era of PMB he was the president of Residential Doctors in Nigeria, A professor of O&G, From being the former Vc of UI, currently minister of Health. He has headed many international organizations. Y won't he say so? Can we ask him, how many of his son dt studied medicine is now a farmer?

Well, he may be right but saying it in a very harsh way. As an elderly medic and a teacher, I've affirmed to physician oat to respect him and his likes, who are doing more harm than good to the Nigerian healthcare system.
I practiced rural medicine in Nigeria and I never wanted to leave despite the numerous challenges, which most people in the teaching hospitals may never experience.
I decided to leave in January 2017 and I indeed left in December.
Reason? I was attacked by some patient's relatives. They beat me and destroyed my expensive android phone, just because I told them to procure the emergency pack in the pharmacy but they felt I should have it with me and they shouldn't pay. Of course, they were arrested but released that same night by the police.
I would have made this event public to garner sympathy on the social media but that would affect the management, as necessary things were not put in place for us.
So, I was persuaded to keep quiet with no compensation nor formal apology. There were claims that those guys are thugs in the community who had nothing to lose.
I registered for some exams, passed, summoned courage and booked a one way ticket. Funny enough, 90% of young medical graduates are waiting for the right time to leave.

Now hes already claiming the video was doctored. Its only in Nigeria our public office holders are never held accountable for thier words and actions. I keep telling my junior colleagues, grad, intern, serve and write ur plab or usmle and leave this hellhole. There is nothing here for doctors. Even dubai, qatar needs docs, just leave. Dnt make the same mistake we all made by believing in the system. Medicine in Nigeria is effed up oh. A word is enuff for the wise.

That is why this idiot have been working towards killing medical profession in Nigeria, despite mass Exodus of Nigeria doctors to foreign countries it never bug them that one day Nigeria will be left without doctors.

I think he is right.

Saraki studied medicine. He never practised as a doctor for 2 years. Rather, with a certificate in medicine, he worked as a bank MD, adviser to the president on budget, state governor, Senate president and still wants to become a president of Nigeria.

I think if Prof. Adewole has said some will go into politics, instead of saying farming. He would not have being condemned.

All these ranting calling the man all sorts of unprintable names is just what I don't understand. What the man said is just very much in order.

Don't other graduates who even studied more than the over hyped Doctors farm? Please, there are many PhD holders everywhere in the world who are farmers. The ministers' advise is not bad at all. A lot of people spend up to 12years studying up to PhD and later deviate from what they have studied. That is why you have Lawyers, Accountants, Doctors, Engineers, surveyors, etc all going into politics instead of only practising what they have studied. Else, politics should have been left for those who studied political science and public administration.

Although, I know that some people's view on this discussion is out of ignorance. Because I have read where some are saying, after 7years, how can the person drop the certificate and take up hoes and matchet and go to farm. They forgot that farming has gone far beyond that level even in many rural communities today. Again, they should also see farming beyond just cultivation of land for food. How many hospitals are up to the level of any of the Dangote farms be it sugar, floor, rice etc in terms of wealth and other indices? So Any graduate can make a far better decent living out of farming if he so desire to do so. its a matter of choice.

He is correct because what he said expresses the health policy of this Zoo. Doctors after training go to farm as untrained farmers, while trained agriculturists go to work in health institutions as untrained doctors.
He must be one of those NEPA certificated leaders like his boss. Nigeria has gone full circle to the point that what goes round must come round. Una Papa!

Sad.
They are just there to collect their allocations and please their ogas.I think it was Prof.Olikoye Ransome-Kuti who last tried to make innovations in the health sector.

he is absolutely right, if you are not finding your feet in medical practice you should try other things like farming, tailoring even music.

Not every doctor will succeed in medical practice that is pretty much obvious
Re: Isaac Adewole: Not All Medical Graduates Must Practice, Some Can Be Farmers by King44(m): 8:48am On Sep 22, 2018
We can criticize him for all we want but that is the plain truth, I think the doctors should just travel out of the country after school or it is even better to enrol ones child with one educated mechanized farmer let him learn everything he has to learn abt faming and market, gather all the money meant for that 7 or 8 years after high school n set him or her up, to secure a job in naija na by God grace may God favour me

Well the question should be do we even have enough doctors on ground to meet up with the health requirements.

Well it's no problem having medical related People doing diverse things BUT it shouldn't come from the health minister!

There is nothing wrong with what the minister said in fact he is correct. medical practice is for excellent doctors below average doctors should consider a career in farming etc and quit destroying lives. zero tolerance for quack doctors

Your unborn generation will suffer from this kind of quagmire in sha Allah.. they won't escape it.

If you like send them to Mars to study, they won't be spared.

Buhari should sack this one before 2019 or else he will spoil things for him..
what concerns his unborn generation? Africans should grow up. How old are you? A 10 year old in better climes cannot think so low. I am ashamed. Probably you believe your present predicaments was due to the sins of your earlier generation. And you still want to compound the situation for your unborn generation? Grow up boy

spot on
Doctors just have over sized ego, the minister has said nothing wrong. Doctors who are not performing in medical practice should consider farming rather than destroying lives it's common sense.

He is not saying all excellent doctors should go and farm rather the dull n incompetent ones who probably repeated most courses in medical school
