Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modrić has been crowned the world's best player at Fifa's The Best awards.
The 33-year-old was the favourite going into Monday’s ceremony in London, ahead of former team mate Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah.

The Blancos maestro claimed the award at a star-studded ceremony this evening after what’s been a superb year for the ex-Tottenham man.

This is a victory for pure football, for Artistry and Impact over Statistics, a victory for the Car Engine over the Shiny Headlights, for Consistency over Periodicity. A win by a player who conducts the whole team on the pitch and dictates the rhythm of the game consistently over one who is anonymous for most of the game and then pops up to score penalties and tap-ins all over the place.

If football were meant to be read only as a statistic, then Figo, Zidane, Ronaldinho, Cannavaro and Kaka will never have won the Fifa World player of the year in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007 respectively.

That is for those, especially some of the indomie generation, who never learnt how to appreciate beautiful football.

I think it is very disrespectful of Ronaldo and Messi to both miss the event. I am very disappointed in them both. For the past 10 Years people have been attending to see you both win, now it is the turn of someone else to win and in their mind, if they are not the recipient, there is no need to attend.
