Arsenal Vs Leicester City: Don’t forget about Alex Iwobi

Pain in the Arsenal

Arsenal were excellent in a 3-1 win over Leicester City on Monday night. Alex Iwobi wasn’t directly involved in any of the goals. But that doesn’t mean he should be forgotten.

Mesut Ozil was the man who grabbed the headlines when Arsenal hosted Leicester City on Monday night. And rightly so. His goal, his slid through pass to Hector Bellerin, his wonderful run-over-dummy and assist. Ozil was brilliant.

But perhaps lost in all of the Ozil oogling, the gushing over Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and the rather ambitious title talk that is currently residing in the Emirates stanchions was the performance of Alex Iwobi, an understated but still excellent display that may not receive the recognition it deserves.

Iwobi didn’t register an assist. He didn’t score a goal. He was hardly involved in any of the moves that actually resulted in the three goals. He created just one pass. Henrikh Mkhitaryan was the only midfielder to have fewer touches than Iwobi. He completed just 80% of his passes, the lowest figure in the starting XI, other than Alexandre Lacazette. It almost looks as if he didn’t play very well. And by the stats, he didn’t. But stats don’t always tell the whole story.


Iwobi was as good in this game as he has been all season. Playing off the left flank, he was Arsenal’s primary threat in a disappointing first half, playing with verve and vivacity, speed with the ball at his feet and a flair that comes with a far greater confidence that is coming thanks to Unai Emery’s management.

The key moment in the whole match came midway through the first half. Leicester were one goal to the good. Arsenal were somewhat on the ropes, struggling to contain the pacy Leicester attack, and the crowd had gone quiet.

And then, Iwobi, tracking a high clearance that was not aimed for any player in particular, trapped the ball brilliantly, caressing it with the top of his foot, while holding off a defender with his arm and body. He then burst down the sideline, driving forwards with real pace and purpose. He turned back and then slipped the ball through the legs of a Leicester player, drawing a raucous cheer from the crowds, and passed the ball to a teammate.

It didn’t lead to anything. It could have very easily be forgotten. And a lot of the good work that Iwobi did could very easily have been forgotten. It wasn’t a part of a goal. The focus has been on Ozil and Alexandre Lacazette and Aubameyang. Not on Iwobi. But that would be unfair on the Nigerian. His performance deserves more recognition than to merely be part of the small print.

Iwobi is in the form of his life. And this was just another example to file under a growing classification of brilliant displays.

The NFF might want to cut cost by inviting a majority of homebased players to execute the inconsequential game against Seychelles. The game is by March next year when the league must have resumed.

So, I'm not expecting to See that much foreign based players getting invited.

Yes. We need at least a draw against SA to make Seychelles game a formality. SA will need at least a draw against Libya in the case of a draw or loss to the SE. A win over SE will save them the anguish of depending on a result against the Mediterranean knights to qualify.

Mikel John Obi has promised to donate money to Nigeria Amputee Football Team » who are cash-strapped ahead of the 2018 Amputee Football World Cup.


Known as the Special Eagles , the Nigeria Amputee Football Team have been soliciting for money to fund what would be their first World Cup campaign.
According to BBC Sport, Mikel wants to support the team with money and kit.


Fred Edoreh who has been coordinating fund-raising for the team said Mikel has promised to help out.
" We've spoken to a representative of John Mikel Obi who has offered to help the team, " Edoreh told BBC Sport .
" His support will come as a big boost, but right now the dilemma is to find the flights to get the squad to Mexico.”

Race against time


With just a day to go to the kickoff, the Special Eagles are in a race against time to make it to 2018 Amputee Football World Cup in Mexico after missing out on the last three editions due to lack of funding.


Nigeria face Brazil in their first game of the Amputee World Cup on Sunday, October 28 and the first batch of the team made of eight players and coach will leave Nigeria on Wednesday.


Fund-raising is still ongoing to ensure that the second batch of players and coaches make it to Mexico before the first game on Sunday.


Several Nigerians including President of the
Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Amaju Pinnick and a host of Super Eagles » players have thrown in their support for the team.


It has been a hard journey for the team who got into an accident earlier in October on their way to Abuja to secure visas for their trip.

Isaac Success was handed his first start in the English Premier League this season and was crucial to Watford securing a 2-0 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, according to coach Javi Gracia.

After a bright, unprecedented start to the season, the Hornets were dealt a rude awakening by Manchester United on Matchday 5, narrowly losing the game 2-1. And prior to Saturday’s win, the Vicarage Road outfit hit a slump, winless in their next three league games.

Ahead of the travel to the Molineux Stadium, captain Troy Deeney picked up a hamstring strain and could not make the trip.

However, stunners from Etienne Capoue and Roberto Pereyra in the 20th and 21st minutes helped the visitors return to winning ways and the manager has highlighted the effect of his tactical switch.

“We were playing with one striker and Roberto, Gerard [Deulofeu] and Will [Hughes] behind him [Success]. You can find a different style of play than you can with two strikers,” Gracia said.

“I know Gerard is not in the best condition yet but he helped the team to play well and to get a good result.”

According to Gracia, Deeney is not expected to sit out for long as he should be ready for Huddersfield Town’s visit.

However, it is yet to be seen what role Success plays for the seventh-placed side on Saturday.

Allnigeriasoccer.com understands that Oghenekaro Etebo will not be available for selection when Stoke City face Sheffield United at Bramall Lane in the EFL Championship on Tuesday, October 23.

The Potters number eight started as a holding midfielder along with Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi in the two Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Libya in Uyo and Sfax.

Medical tests carried out after he returned to the United Kingdom last week revealed that he suffered a hamstring injury while on international duty.

Etebo does not want to rush himself back from the injury and has been undergoing light training.

In addition, Chelsea loanee Kenneth Omeruo is expected to fully recover before CD Leganes upcoming La Liga match against Levante.

I don't think that story is true, remember he is now an U-20 player for England so lots of paperwork needs to be done to get him play for us, might take 5-6months for that to happen.

U guys should stop dis irritating talk abeg, our society is a patriarch one. Arnaut and Dessers are our grand sons, hence shouldn't be considered a loss. It is natural they choose their fathers' countries, but if they decide to pitch their tents here(their maternal home), good, after all, we dont cast away our grandchildren, but if they dont, no qualms. Their respective mums are Nigerians married to Dutch and Belgian fathers unlike other mulattoes like ebuehi, Balogun, Agboola, Osaze, Ekong et al whose dads are Nigerians. It is more dignifying bearing ur dad's surname than ur mother's maiden name, so our culture taught us.


Arnaut is no loss, he was never rly ours, same as Dessers. In our tradition, the sons of our daughters are never part of our kins men, though they remain part of us. Gbam!!
