Not really. It was and always has been about Kenyan interests. Its a very convenient fallback position that sells when the govt doesnt want to be engaged in potentially messy affairs. Never was about aid. We can and have done without aid for decades. Cubans and USSR played a critical role in the Namibian independence from the apartheid bullies but it took too long in my opinion. If Namibians had been serious about independence in the 50s & 60s they would have fought off the Boers. Kenya sent landrovers to Namibia in 1964 (just a year after independence) believing the Namibians were about to light things up only to discover they were more concerned with negotiations than with war. I think you meant Angola because they got their independence earlier.

I can imagine Mandela and Mbeki at the airport thinking like; WTF? Yeah the whole point is that you were the most populated country in Africa as at 1960 with close to Kenya's current population which made you a giant. 45 million people in one country in the 60s was a lot of people.
