Ishilove: I reckon your club name should be something along the lines of "The dynamic duo of horror sissies." |
Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by mekaprime: 6:59pm On Nov 03, 2018 |
Ishilove: Your opinion it is, and I respect it, but my assertion is rather objective, because I have a colleague with similar health condition & comparing the way he behaves to Mark's character in the movie, I'll say Mark was way off in interpreting that role. So, my judgment was based on facts & experience. On the other hand, considering the fact that there are 4 basic types of bipolar disorder, I'll say let us agree to disagree. |

KoiceReloaded: No thanks, I think I'll pass on the aforementioned movies.. But I have a question, this demonic possession & ghost movies etc, are the also part of the paranormal genre? |
Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by Nobody: 7:10pm On Nov 03, 2018 |
mekaprime: Supernatural subgenre. There is no paranormal genre. I thought you were referring to Paranormal Activity, a horror film franchise that belongs to found-footage subgenre. |

KoiceReloaded: yeah, that's it, Supernatural subgenre. I stay off anything thing that has to do with this particular subgenre. movies like, the ring, grudge, autopsy of Jane doe, Annabelle creation, gave me quite the scare. |
Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by Beorn: 9:12pm On Nov 03, 2018 |
KoiceReloaded: I perfectly understand your angle, but the issue I can deduce from your post is that there were a lot of jump scares in The Nun used in furthering the plot instead of focusing on imaginative and creative storyline to induce the fear factor while making the movie educative and interesting. You need to understand that all horror movies can't be psychological masterpiece like the Sixth Sense. Supernatural Horror movies like The Nun or The Conjuring franchise are supernatural horror movies and usually involves the use of ghosts, demons and nightmarish creatures to tell their tales. Some horror movies like the Saw franchise focuses more the use of gore and violence than jump scares. We've the ones like Chainsaw Massacre that uses that as well alongside jump scares. There's no denying the fact that psychological horrors are the best among all horror subgenres, and my favorite subgenre of the horror because it's quite educative and stimulates the brain and uses less jump scares, but jump scare tactics are what made the horror genre famous and gave that genre its fear factor. If jump scares are used alongside a good storyline like in The Nun, then the excessive jump scares can be pardoned. The Hereditary movie despite it being a psychological horror, had a boring building up of the suspense, taking over an hour to build the storyline left me feeling sleepy for most of the time. And it still employed one or two jump scare techniques. The Nun trumps it any day, any time. 1 Like |

toluxe0075: Exactly, especially the supernatural subgenre of horror movies. I can't even watch a supernatural horror movie without a jump scare. |

ShaqFu:Lol! I know what you mean but I think they took it too far in this particular movie. Especially the scene were the Priest kept following the possessed kid then eventually ended up being trapped in a conffin. Infuriating. This is why you hardly see Black people in horror movies. |

BoyKa: Undisputed. 7/10. Seriously, Scott Adkins is lit. The way he moves is jaw dropping. He seem to have taken over the franchise though, I wouldn't mind a reappearance from Michael Jai White. |
Re: What Movie Are You Watching Now? by Nobody: 10:09pm On Nov 03, 2018 |
Beorn:The Sixth Sense is not even a good example of a proper psychological horror. The sequel Split did a far more better job. Also, Others was phenomenal in making a strong case against jump-scare tactics in the supernatural subgenre. Beorn:- It follows, - The Others, - The Witch, - A Dark Song, - The Void, - The Autopsy of Jane Doe, - The Orphanage These are some of supernatural horrors that don't rely on jump-scares. In It Follows, an entity stalks the protagonist and his friends, but in a quiet creepy way. For instance, it builds up so much dread that when a door opens, you'd fully expect the entity to be one behind the door, only for it to be some ordinary bloke. The film is a tutorial on how to use creativity and psychological mindgames to keep us at the edge of our seats, instead of using some cheap scaring tactics. Jump-scare cheapens supernatural horror, and makes it less interesting, boring, and forgettable. Beorn:Jump-scare is one of the most basic building blocks of horror. It's a vault, a panic room. It's safe. It's a tactic to fall back on when a filmmaker doesn't wanna take risk, probably because they don't have the intellectual capability to create something meaningful out of something less meaningful. Beorn: Wow! If a powerful and meaningful movie like Hereditary could bore you, little wonder you're so taken with it's polar opposite, The Nun. It all make sense now. You're a bonafide jump-scare lover. |

KoiceReloaded: While The Others was a supernatural subgenre, you can't really compare it with most supernatural subgenre which focuses more on the exorcism of violent demons and scary phenomenons. The Others focused more on the ghost world, its concept was amazing, way above most horror movies. It's not feasible to keep producing horrors like Split and Others constantly. A lot of brain-storming goes into it. - It follows, Among that list, I've seen It Follows and The Others, and they scared me WAAAAAY LESS than The Nun did. In short, The Others never scared me for once because the movie focused more on building the characters and the plot in the movie ahead of the impending mind-Bleep at the end of the movie. It Follows scared me like twice. And that reiterates my point that non-use of jump scare hardly scare audience, even me that's easily susceptible to fear in horror movies. Another horror movie that hardly scared me except during the jump scare scenes was IT. Without Jump scare, I'm not sure any horror can scare me except extremely gore ones like Saw. IT is interesting without the jump scares. Such horrors are my kind of horror movies. They focus less on the fear factor, but more on the message/story line. Jump scare might be basic, but there are some horrors where it's required alongside a good script. The Nun without those jump scares would've been an average movie. The jump scare was needed to add fear factor to it. Wow! If a powerful and meaningful movie like Hereditary could bore you, little wonder you're so taken with it's polar opposite, The Nun. It all make sense now. You're a bonafide jump-scare lover. Powerful ko, powerless ni!! Yimu. Hereditary was a boring horror movie. Its message lost in the sleep-inducing time-wasting mechanism the director employed in the first one hour of the movie. A movie that took so much valuable time to build up its storyline, only for the ending to be very basic. Compare it with The Others whose build up matched the unexpected ending. It's worth the wait. Hereditary still employed jump scare towards the end to salvage what had been a total waste of time. If that movie was scripted well, it'd have achieved its aim within 1hr 30mins instead of the 2hrs borefest. Mtcheew. |

Beorn:Aswear you just spoke my mind on the movie. Its a very slowwwwww movie. Still wondering how it scared people. The only tragedy seen was when the girl's head cut off. Then perhaps when the dark entity was after the boy. Koice abeg Hereditary no be am Was just an overhyped movie. |

olu4life: I'm still wondering what's so good about Hereditary. Is it not the same Hereditary we all watched? The way Koice was praising it, I had to re-check the movie on Wikipedia to make sure I didn't watch a fake one. Koice probably smoked Crack that made him think Hereditary was Split and other good horror movies. My rating of Hereditary then was and still is 4/10. Boring movie. 2 Likes |

Beorn:Supernatural horror na supernatural horror. The only difference is that some have high productions values coupled with creative writing, whilst the others have low production values with lazy writing. Beorn:All I can glean from all you typed is that you have become so enamored of cheap jump-scares that you have become completely desensitized to intellectual horror, i.e, any horror without or with a few jump-scares. Need I remind you that The Others ranks as one of the scariest films of it's generation, and that the twist at the end only served to made it even more creepy? The suspense buildup was intense, the red herrings well crafted, the subterfuge so masterfully done that the audience were completely fooled into believing that the protagonist and her kids are the victims of a haunting. Imagine everyone's utter shock and horror when it was finally revealed that the protagonist and her kids are the ones haunting the house along. It created an interesting concept, which is basically, a supernatural horror told from a ghost perspective. The best horrors rely less on jump-scares. If you go to Rotten Tomatoes, and look up the highest rated horror movies, it shouldn't come as a surprise to you that the majority are non jump-scare horrors ranging from psychological horrors to found-footage horrors, with a few supernatural horrors thrown in the mix. For the fact that jump-scare is the principal fear-factor in The Nun entails that it has a weak script to begin with. When a horror movie that is not a slasher, vampire or zombie horror employs jump-scare so liberally, it's merely covering up a huge deficiency. 'Cuz without that jump-scares, it's nothing but an empty husk. Such films rarely have substance. What you said about IT is total BS, btw. The film is a pure supernatural horror that is more about the fear than the message. If you've read the book, you wouldn't have said that. The film didn't do the novel justice. Beorn: Hereditary is dope. The suspense buildup is so well done, that even when it employed a jump scare, it wasn't to dissipate the tension at all, but to worsen it. That movie is a masterpiece, and for the fact you hate it says a lot about you. I wonder how you can hate Hereditary, and yet somehow like Split and IT, considering they all favor isolation and heavy atmosphere over a loud CGI monster that goes BUMP in the night. It's a mystery to me. |
