wirinet: More babel. Anybody who claim to be a scholar can come forward to give his own thought on any word or phrase, but such independent definitions doesn't denigrate from the fact that the word or phrase concerned has its natural meaning to begin with. Just as someone can define a knife to be a tool for cutting through food items, another scholar can come forward to define it as a tool used in killing people during a fight. While that is true, does it mean that the purpose of using a knife is strictly for killing? This is the mindset of the scholars you quoted, and also the idiotic postulations the Kid president of France was trying to pass on to the US president, and I find that very stupid and unintelligent. Macron fails to know that when a word or phrase has a compound meaning, you cannot use it exclusively or try to make it an absolute. Let that sink in. While Patriotism has been around for 150 years before the use of nationalism, the latter's original meaning naturally correlate with that of Patriotism. Nationalism came into popularity in the early 19th century, and it originally means strong devotion and loyalty to one's country. It was not until the 20th century when matters of political sovereignty and battle for self-determination takes central stage that some scholars started introducing different conceptual definitions to the original meaning of the term nationalism. But it never denies the fact that it shares same original idea with Patriotism. Therefore, the assumption that fighting for the right of one's country is radical nationalism is, I must say, sheer fallacy, baseless and puerile. You forget to mention that the Macron you are talking about is the president of a country that thinks its language and culture is better than all others. I guess you know nothing about the French policy of Association and the Policy of Assimilation used by colonial France on Africa. All colonial rule are rooted under the principles of radical nationalism, if we are to go by that term. France and Britain are grandpatrons of nationalism, but i guess you don't know that because, when liberals are involved, nationalism can only mean "white nationalism", especially where Trump is the object of discussion. Pathetic thinking. Every nation on earth has a presumably notion of nationalism, whether you like it or not. The Germans will forever see themselves as the most innovative people on earth, the British think they live a way of life that is unrivaled anywhere in the world, while the Jews think they are the most perculial set of people on the planet, even as the United States thinks its democracy and way of life trumps all others in the world, and so will do anything necessary to project the American dream even to the shores of other nations. All these are driven by Nationalistic ideas interwoven in Patriotism. So for Macron to attempt lecturing the leader of another country about nationalism, when himself preside over one of the world's most nationalistic countries, makes him a hypocrite, or simply because he doesn't understand a jot of what the two terms actually meant from their original usage. You can take that to the bank. 7 Likes 2 Shares |

Appleyard:There's one problem. It's that you can dress things up anyhow you like but you can't deny historical and shared meanings and context, especially when used or understood by some in that context! Nationalism is further oriented towards developing and maintaining a single national identity based on shared, social characteristics, such as culture and language, religion and politics, and a belief in a shared and singular common ancestry (i.e., outdated concepts of race and nationality). "A single national identity based on shared, social characteristics, such as culture and language, religion and politics, and a belief in a shared and singular common ancestry" means, not everyone. Unless he takes the time to include those who might feel they aren't included, which some claim he's done the exact opposite of. Here's info about France's nationalist party. And you'd find here a list of active nationalist parties in Europe. Please click on the links in the links to educate yourself on what Nationalism implies. You might understand why some people worry when they hear the word. But if you knew this already, please state your race, for the record. I'd understand if you were part of Trumps in-group. It should however be noted that Americans tend to have definition of words that vary to meanings in Europe, so Trump might not mean 'Nationalist' in the classical European sense where the word is synonymous with racism, Hitler and far rightism. I'm open to being educated on this. 1 Like |

Mahatma Ghandi, George Washington, James Madison, Kwame Nkrumah, Julius Nyerere, jomo Kenyatta, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Lee Kuan Yew all called themselves nationalists, why always naming only Hitler? If all those great men were evil and racists for calling themselves nationalist, then it is good to be evil and racist because those men were good and great men who changed the world for better, not these crazy liberals who think they can change the world by changing the meaning of words to suit whatever latest reason they have found to be angry about everything 8 Likes 3 Shares |

budaatum: Itchie just gave you a resounding answer, so I won't waste precious time writing long epistle. Like Itchie said, Gandhi was a nationalists, Earnest Shonekan, Herbert Macaulay and the likes of George Washington were nationalists, how come they didn't look like Hitler? Today, these people are celebrated all over the world for their strong and unwavering nationalistic ideas. You guys always paint a picture of Hitler when looking at nationalism. Isn't that bias and stereotypical? If Macron had referred to "extreme nationalism" and stuck with it, rather than trying to make the term "nationalism" exclusively evil, that would have been a different topic all together. But he did not. What he was actually saying is that the term nationalis is exclusively evil, and that is where I call his assertion wrong and unintelligent. If we are to go by his summation, then George Washington is evil, Herbert Macaulay is evil, Azikiwe is evil, Nkruma, Gandhi, and more, are evil, right? Just accept the fact that the term is subjective and shouldn't be used exclusively. You must also accept the fact that all nations are driven by nationalistic ideas. Anyone who tells you otherwise is deceiving you. No nation on this planet will want to serve your interest first before his, and you know that. Everyone is fighting for its own interest, and that includes France as well. So let's stop painting another picture. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Re: American Politics Thread: Trump Is President-Elect! by budaatum: 2:31pm On Nov 14, 2018 |
I agree Itchie's post was resounding. Like mine, a subjective view, and informative. And yes, a nation can be nationalistic without it being a bad thing. For that though, it must include every type of person in that nation. All races, religions, colour, creeds etc, and not the divisive type of nationalism some would claim they see (perhaps in error), in America. Do I need to tell you to "Just accept the fact that the term is subjective", and that when Trump says "nationalism", not many people think Ghandhi, Washington, Nkrumah? What they hear is Hitler, Duke and crosses burning on lawns, albeit, perhaps, through their subjective lenses. The support he gets from white supremacists is certainly not for Ghandhi and Nkrumah type nationalism. I mentioned "context", which denotes subjectivity. And if you understood Europe, where Macron made his statement, which is the current discussion - and during WW1 Centenary Celebrations at that - you would realise nationalism to him is fascism and Hitler. Incidentally too, it, Hitler type nationalism, is a current problem in Macron land at the moment, and all over Europe too, and nationalism in Europe is exclusively evil. Appleyard: 1 Like |
