But I didn't get to know how Helen and Kenny ended up, and Rhoda's situation after Nonso's death

You deserve some accolades cool

The bell sounded. Rhoda went to see who it was.

The visitor was a lady some couple of years older than Rhoda. She had a travelling bag with her and she was obviously coming from a trip.

'Yes?' Rhoda looked at her inquiringly.

The lady smiled at her.

'You must be new here. I'm the baby of the house.'

'You say?'

'I'm the daughter of the owners of this house.' She pointed at the house as if she wanted Rhoda to have a complete understanding of what she meant.

'Oh, oga pikin. Welcome.'

Rhoda wanted to take the bag from her, but the latter politely declined.

Sandra was no stranger to her own house. She took her bag to her room upstairs. The room was neat and smelled fresh, as if they had
prepared it for her arrival.

'Is that you, Sandra?' She heard her father call out.

'Oh, dad. I didn't know you're at home.' She went out to meet her father. The man had come out of his bedroom. They met at the corridor.

'Good morning, dad. I didn't know you were at home. Is mummy around too?' She curtsied and briefly hugged him.

'No. She has already gone out. How was school?'

'School was fine.'

Nonso nodded. He knew his daughter would be coming home that day, but he had thought she would be coming in the afternoon. With Sandra
around, any amorous plan with Rhoda would wait till another time.

The inspectors had come and gone and the atmosphere was relaxed. Mrs. Kweku was satisfied with the encounter. She noted some things she would put in the report she would forward to the school board.

Janet was still with her in the former's office. She too could heave sigh of relief now. She actually admired the thoroughness of the older woman. A good administrator she was. Even the team of inspectors acknowledged Mrs. Kweku's ways of handling official matters.

Mrs. Kweku could now attend to other issues. She turned to Janet. 'I want you to stay here while I send for the V.P over that other matter.'

Janet nodded. She knew the other matter the woman meant. The VP was sent for. He did not come alone. Rather, he came with the accused teacher and the girl that made the accusation.

They were all ushered into the office. Mrs. Kweku cleared her throat and went straight to the point.

'Agnes.' The Administrator faced the fifteen years old girl. 'What did you say happen between you and Mr. Layi?'

Agnes told them how she had always seen the man as an uncle. There were certain topics in Biology the man had taught and were not clear. As usual, she had gone to see him for clear explanations. The very question she asked about three weeks ago was what brought the trouble.

'What trouble?' Mrs. Kweku wanted to know.

'Ever since then, he would be asking me personal questions.' The girl paused. She needed some prompting.

'Such as what?' Mrs. Kweku came to her rescue.

'Such as if I'm still a virgin; whether I have boyfriend or not; the color of my bra; the size of my ...my breasts, and so on. He said he would
like to make me his wife I told him to stop saying so, and I left. But since that day, he would send for me during break and would find an opportunity to make his advances. I've warned him but he would not listen.'

It was the turn of Mr. Layi to defend himself. All what Agnes said were tissues of lies, he said vehemently. There was no way he could have told her that he wanted to marry her. He was already happily married and he had no intention of taking another wife. He said God forbid such a thing to happen.

'Why would this girl be lying against you?' Mrs. Kweku was hard on him.

Before Layi could reply, Agnes interrupted. 'I have a proof.'

She brought out her phone and scrolled through the text messages.

'He sent this to my phone number.' Agnes showed Mrs. Kweku the message. At this point, Layi became sober.

'The message is a poem on love. It's a poem that could have been written to a sister. It's a harmless poem.' Layi found himself drowning, but
he must hold on to any straw he hoped could keep him afloat.

Mrs. Kweku read the poem aloud. 'You think this is a poem a teacher should write to a student?'

Layi had no answer to that.

'Alright. I think the truth of the matter is already established.' Mrs. Kweku adjusted her eye glasses magisterially. 'I will communicate to you the
date and time you would face the disciplinary panel.'

'Thank you, ma'am.' The appreciation came from Agnes. She was happy it appeared she was getting justice.

Agnes, Layi and the VP left the office.

'That was it.' Mrs. Kweku beamed in satisfaction. Then, her face wore a frown. 'The man was actually harassing the girl.'

Janet shook her head. 'And he was supposed to be married. What a moral decadence.'

Some minutes later, when Janet was back in her office, she thought about Emma again. Since that ugly incident, he had not called her. Did
that mean everything was over just like that? Didn't he have something to say in his defence, as puerile as it might be?

On the spur of the moment, Janet decided to call his number. It rang on and on, but he would not pick it. That was it. Janet knew that this
relationship had got to the end of the road.

She was bothered about her love life. Her mother had not really played important role in giving her guidance about her love life, but maybe
that was because she had not sought her counsel. Janet decided that she would share this experience with her and hear what she had to say.

It was already five o'clock. What an eventful day. She parked her personal things inside her bag and stood up to close for the day.

Chapter Three
Raphael was still busy with his lesson notes on his laptop. The topic he was writing on was finite and non finite verbs. As usual, he typed the words carefully and thoroughly. The other teachers had closed for the day, leaving only him and Babs, the Civic Education teacher. Babs soon packed his books and stood up.

'Omo, how far?' Babs had the tendency to talk and act with’swag’.

'Some minutes more.' Raphael's eyes remained glued to the monitor.

'That means we'll see tomorrow.' Babs walked towards the door.

Raphael and Babs lived on the same street and sometimes closed together.

'Good night.' Raphael looked up briefly and returned to his work.

He was engrossed in the work. About ten minutes after Babs had gone, Mandy, one of his students in SS 2, came into the staff room.

'Good evening, sir.' Mandy came right to his table.

'Good evening, Mandy. You are supposed be in the hostel, aren't you?'

She smiled. 'Yes. I quickly came to see you.'

'To see me? Hope no problem.'

'No problem. It's about the essay competition you told us about. I want to put in for it and I'm wondering if you can put me through how to go
about it.'

Raphael nodded understandingly. Mandy was a brilliant and enthusiastic student. He was not surprised that she wanted to attempt the essay.
He ought to assist her, but she had come at the wrong time.

'Mandy, I would have really loved to assist you, but not now.'

Her face showed disappointment. 'You mean you're too busy?'

'No. I mean I cannot attend to you here in the staff room without any other person around.'

'Does that really matter?' The girl looked like she had just heard something strange.

'Yes. It matters. Don't worry. Tomorrow during break, come around. I'll be able to assist you then.'

She shrugged. 'O.k. Tomorrow, then.'

She smiled and left. Raphael watched her go. He was satisfied with his response. One of the lines in the Lord's Prayer says Lead us not into
temptation. Raphael agreed. In addition to that he believed he must not lead himself into temptation.

Besides, he had just started a personal fasting and prayers program. It was a seven-day activity staring from that day. The major prayer point
was that God should reveal his wife to him. At thirty one, Raphael wanted to marry now. He did not want to wait until he was thirty nine like his
senior brother before he married.

He finished what he was typing, saved it and shot down the system. He then packed his books. It was time to go home.

Janet was in her mother's bedroom. They had just finished their supper and had come up to relax. Her father had not yet come from work. Actually, he had travelled on business and would not be coming back for the next few days.

'Mummy, there's something I want to discuss with you.' Janet was intent on sharing her burden.

'Is it about your work? Is there any problem there?'

'No, mum. It's not about the work. The work is alright.'

Her mother sat on the comfortable sofa in the large bedroom and switched on a flat screen television. Janet sat by her side. The cable decoder scanned for stations.

'I caught my boyfriend with another lady.' Janet's utterance was morose.

Julie looked at her daughter quickly. 'Don't tell me what you want to discuss with me is your boyfriend.'

'It is part of it.' Janet grimaced. 'Why is it that I'm very unlucky with those I've had as boyfriends? Why is it that I don't have a lasting
relationship?' Why....?'

'Hey, one by one, dear lady. Let's take the questions one by one.'

Janet took a deep breath. 'Mummy, I have noticed that the relationships I have with men don't last; those I think should lead to lasting
relationship don't last? Why is it like that?'

Her mother chuckled. 'My dear girl, why are you anxious over nothing?'

Janet shook her head. 'Mummy, you think this is nothing? You think a relationship one has hoped will last forever and which suddenly comes to
an end after four months or so, is nothing? I don't think so, mum. I don't think so.'

Her mother smiled. 'If you want the relationship to last, then you should make it work.'

'I'm trying on my part. I'm doing all I could do to make it work. The problem is the other person. They were not committed as I am. They're so
unfaithful and unreliable.'

Julie mused over what her daughter just said. 'What made you come to all these conclusions?'

'Mum, let me give you the instance of the last lover I had. I was in his house last Saturday, after a couple of hours, I left, went to Ikeja for
shopping and realized that I forgot my phone in his house.

'I drove back there and what did I see? I saw him romancing another lady in the sitting room. Yes, without any shame, they were romancing
right there in the sitting room. Our relationship was just some few months old, and this happened.'

Julie was pensive for a while. 'All these don't mean you're doomed or something. What I can advise is: don't fall for any guy. Give in only to a
serious minded one. Once you do that, you'll see that things will work out well.'

Janet nodded. May be her mother was right. She had not been careful about making a choice. But wait a minute. All these lovers looked very
serious and committed at the beginning. How was she supposed to know that they would turn out to be unfaithful and unreliable? Despite her
mother's simplification of the matter, Janet still believed there was much to it.

* * *

Sandra was around to spend the short two-week break after the end of the first semester. She had been around now for days, lazing around, chatting with friends on the phone and receiving some in the house. She had only spent exactly four days, so she still had many days to spend.

Her presence had disorganized Nonso's private plans. However, whatever would be the case, he had decided to visit Rhoda in the middle of the night tonight. He might have done that before now, but Sandra had this habit of watching the television until late in the night. That shouldn't be a problem, but it was: the room given to Rhoda was adjacent to the sitting room. Nonso would have to wait for her to leave the sitting room so that he could go and meet Rhoda.

When it was about half hour past midnight, Nonso tiptoed to the edge of the staircase. From there, he could hear the sound of the television.
He went back to sleep. About an hour later, he woke up again. He watched as Rose slept and snored.

He tiptoed to the staircase again. This time, there was no sound from the sitting room. Good, he thought. Stealthily, he climbed the stairs down and went to her room. He turned the knob and it opened. He had earlier told her he would be coming and she should not lock the door.

He entered her room and closed the door gently behind him. Rhoda was sleeping on her bed, oblivious of his presence. She was in the night gown given to her by madam. Seeing her body increased his heart- beat. He gently tapped her on the lap. She woke up and looked at him dreamingly.

'Oga, you don come?' She yawned and rubbed the sleep from her eyes.

'Lower your voice!' He had to chide her. 'Of course, I don come.'

The fastness with which he removed his nightwear was a record one.

'O ya, o ya, remove this thing you're wearing.' To him, there was no time to waste.

She looked at him critically.

'What're you waiting for? O ya now!' There was urgency in his tone.

'Oga, before we go do am, there is something you go do.' She was calm but assertive.

'What's that?' He stared at her.

'I need phone.'

'Is that all? No problem.' He grinned sheepishly.

'Then I go send money to my mother. She no well.'

'Oh, sorry about that. Don't worry, I will give you some money for her.' He held her nightgown and helped to remove it.

She relaxed and smiled. He could have his fill now.

This Saturday evening, Raphael would be rounding off his seven days of fasting and prayers. He had faith and believed in Christ. He also believed in the efficacy of fasting and praying. One of his colleagues at work had derogatorily dismissed his efforts as hunger strike, but Raphael would not be deterred by such an ungodly comment.

He became a devoted Christian about three years ago. Then, he was very sick and at the point of death. He would have died if not for divine intervention. He knew that very well. In that debilitating illness, he had seen death coming. It was not a pleasant experience but he thanked God for everything. Today, that experience had become a testimony and one that he would never forget.

It was not for lack of a partner that he had remained single. No, far from it. There were many ladies of interest, one of which he could have easily married. There were Nike, Bimpe, Sola, Uchechi, among others. Even in the school where he presently taught, Ngozi, the CRK teacher and Becky, the Home Economics teacher could easily fit in to what he had in mind. What then was he waiting for?

It was not for lack of a partner that he had remained single. No, far from it. There were many ladies of interest, one of which he could have easily married. There were Nike, Bimpe, Sola, Uchechi, among others. Even in the school where he presently taught, Ngozi, the CRK teacher and
Becky, the Home Economics teacher could easily fit in to what he had in mind. What then was he waiting for?

The answer was simple. He was waiting for divine guidance. He would not just jump at the nearest lady as a life partner. Rather, he wanted God to pick the partner for him. Raphael believed that indeed, marriage should be for better or for worse. There should be no room for divorce, he always said.

There should be no gambling about it either. That was why he had been waiting on the Lord in this regard. The fasting was over now, and he was waiting for an answer. He would have actually preferred an instant answer, but then, man proposes, God disposes.

After breaking his fasting with pap and moinmoin, he sipped orange juice and sat comfortably in his cozy sitting room. The television was on, but his mind was not there. Rather, he was thinking about who would join him as his life partner in his home. He prayed for the umpteenth time for a speedy answer. He was still ruminating over the issue when he slept off.

He was cultivating the land. The soil was dry and hard but he was trying his best to till it. His intention was to get water from the nearby stream and use it to irrigate the soil after the cultivation.

He was hard-working, no doubt. Just keep working diligently, he told himself. There would be reward for your hard labor. Remember nothing good comes easy. He thought about what he would plant on the farm. Apart from the cash crops, he would also plant fruits and vegetables. He and his family would have a good time. He believed in taking good care of his wife and children. Yes, they would all enjoy the fruits of his labor.

There is a better place you can cultivate, a voice told him. He stopped his work and looked around. He didn't see anyone. He wanted to continue his work, but the voice repeated itself. He stopped again.

Why don't you look beyond where you are? Look at where your wife is standing.

Truly, about one hundred meter away, his wife stood on a grassland that was lush. From afar, she smiled at him and beckoned. Raphael smiled and went to meet her.

'My darling husband, don't you think this place is better?' She spoke more on the viability of the place she preferred.

'It is.' He nodded his agreement. 'This place is indeed much better.' He patted his wife and she laughed.

Raphael woke up. He was confused for the next couple of seconds as he was surprised to find himself in his sitting room. He had dreamt about working on a farmland. The dream looked so real. In that dream, he already had a good wife. Now, back to reality, he knew God was trying to show him his wife.

'What!' His exclamation was absolute. He jumped up.

No, no, no. It could not be. The lady he saw could not and would not be his wife. This one must be a fanciful dream. It could not be. Raphael tried to imagine the possibility, but he shook his head.

Janet was the woman he saw. Janet? No. This must be a fanciful and fantastic dream.

He dismissed the dream and engaged in other things. Later, that night, he had another dream. In it, he lived in a duplex. He was going for an event and he decided to wash his car. He was still making the effort when his wife came to meet him. She too was dressed up for the occasion.

‘Darling, instead of going in this car, why don’t we go in that my new car?’ She pointed at the car. Raphael agreed.

‘You’re right.' He left for the car she pointed at. ‘Let’s go in the new car.’

When he woke up, he realized, again, that the ‘wife’ in the second dream was Janet. Yet, he was not rest assured. Instead of having conviction, Raphael was thinking that his mind was playing trick on him.

Madam Rose decided to stay at home this Monday morning. When she woke up, she complained that she was feverish.

'Will you go to the hospital?' Nonso tried to show some concern. 'Sandra can accompany you.'

'No. I'll stay at home. I think all that I need is rest.'

Nonso let her be. If she would be staying at home, that meant he could leave for his office earlier than before. He went to the bathroom
attached to the bedroom to have his bath.

Rose went downstairs to see what she could prepare to eat. When he got to the kitchen, she saw Rhoda there, talking to someone on the
telephone.

Madam Rose was surprised to see Rhoda with a phone. She had not come with one to the house. She was speaking in her language with
the person she was talking to. Madam waited until she finished.

'Good morning, ma.' Rhoda put the phone on the table in the kitchen.

'Good morning. And where did you get the phone you're using?' Rose stared at the phone.

'Na my aunty buy am.'

'Let me see.'

Rhoda handed the phone to her. It was a new but modest model. Rose examined it briefly and handed it back to her. Then another thing
struck her. The girl always looked very neat and smelled fresh and nice these days. Not only that, Rhoda had started wearing nice clothes.

Where did she get all the money to buy those things? She would probably say her aunty bought them for her. But her aunty did not look
so affluent. She was the one that brought Rhoda to the house. According to the agreement, Rhoda's income should be paid to the woman.
Rhoda had spent weeks in the house, but was yet to collect her first pay, where then was she or the aunty getting the money to buy all
these?

'Look, Rhoda, I hope you've not been stealing my money or your oga's money in this house.' Rose frowned. 'See how you're shining. If I
discover that my money or anyone's money is missing, I'll call the police to arrest you o.'

'Lai Lai, madam. I no dey steal.' Rhoda quickly raised her finger up in a swearing manner.

'I hope you're right. I hope you've not been stealing money in this house.'

Rhoda shook her head vigorously. 'I no dey steal, madam.'

Rose decided not to say anything further on that for now.

'Put water on fire for tea.' Rose's voice remained stern. 'I'll like to take bread and tea this morning.'

'Yes, madam.'

Rose left the kitchen and went back to the bedroom. Her husband was already putting on his clothes.

'Have you noticed Rhoda lately?' Her question on Rhoda was unexpected.

He buttoned his shirt as he considered the question. 'What happened to her?'

'Eh, have you not seen that she's using phone? Not only that, have you not noticed that she's wearing nice clothes and she's looking
nice?'
He scoffed. 'Will you prefer that she should look dirty and smelly?'

His wife looked surprised. 'How could she be looking that good when she has not collected her first salary? You better be careful with
your money. That girl may be a thief, for all we know.' She sat heavily on the bed and gazed at him.

'Are you saying your money is missing?' He stared back at her.

'No, not yet. As least as far as I know, my money is not missing. But one can not totally trust all these house helps. Some of them can
be thieves.' She pursed her lips.

'Well, if your money is not missing and mine is not missing either, then there's no cause for alarm.' He found it easy to dismiss her claim.

Rose had nothing more to say on the matter after his dismissive submission. The truth was Rhoda had not stolen anything in that house
or elsewhere. Nonso was the one buying all those nice things for Rhoda.

Monday morning was always busy for him. Until long break, there was no respite for Raphael as he moved from one class to another. During break, he sat in the staff room to take his breakfast. Just then, Becky came to his table.

'What happened to your phone on Saturday?' Becky smiled. 'I tried to reach you several times but could not get through.'

'Nothing was wrong with the phone.' He smiled back. 'It was on through out the weekend. Maybe it was the network.'

'Could be.' She held his hand gently. 'I was just trying to call you to say hello.'

Raphael smiled in appreciation. 'Thank you. How was your weekend?'

'Fine. How about yours?'

'Fine too. Thank you.' He patted her left shoulder.

Raphael wished he could express deep love to her and become intimate, but he knew he could not do that anyhow. He must continue to wait
until he got the divine nod. His mind went to his dreams of Janet. How lofty. How unrealistic!

He cautioned himself. What if the dream was real and Janet was actually the right one for him?

He chuckled to himself. Over to God, he thought. God himself would be the one to make it happen, since He was the one that decided it in the
first place.

After his meal, he decided to search Janet's name on the Facebook. He found it and clicked that he would like to add her as friend. She was
on-line. Her response was swift. She accepted his offer of friendship.

He decided to take a step further. The chart box became active. He wrote to her that he would like to be her friend. She asked if they were
not friends already. No, he was not looking for just acquaintances but good friends, he wrote. Good friends were hard to find, she stated. Maybe
people should just remain acquaintances.

He quite agreed. Good friends were indeed hard to find. But that fact did not mean there were no good friends. He agreed that humans had
limitations and could fail, yet friendship, companionship, fellowship and other natural factors would always bring humans together.

Thanks for your lectures, she wrote. Maybe an occurrence would make her change her perspectives later. For now...

Give her a call, his mind told him. He wanted to ignore it but the nudge was overwhelming. From her page on the social media, he got her
number and dialed. She picked it after the third ringing.

'Good afternoon sister Janet. I hope I'm not disturbing you.'

'Good afternoon. Sorry who's on the line?'

'This is Raphael, the person you were having online chat with.'

She chuckled. 'Are you not the same I was chatting with on-line?'

'Yes, I decided to call you.' He paused briefly. ‘Sorry I will not take much of your time. We were discussing friendship. There' a friend I can
introduce to you. He's the best friend in the universe. He will not disappoint or abandon you.'

'That must be a very wonderful friend. Is there still such a friend on earth?'

'There is. His name is Jesus.'

There was a long pause.

'Hello, hello. Sister Janet, are you still there?'

'Yes, I am. But I'm a Christian already.'

'Being a Christian does not really mean one is in good relationship with Jesus. I believe that aspect of cultivating good relationship is when
one realizes that indeed there's no friend like Jesus and that depending on humans will always bring disappointment.'

She sighed. 'Thank you. I didn't know you are a pastor.'

He laughed over the line. ‘Mm you, too. I'll take that as a compliment.'

'I’ll think over what you said.' She laughed shortly. 'Thank you.'

'You're welcome.'

He disengaged the line. He felt that if this kind of refreshing conversation was the only thing he could achieve with her, then glory be to God.

On her part, Janet was solemn when she dropped her phone. She thought over what he just said. Truly she was a Christian but had she been
living by the ethos of Christianity? Had she been living in faith? Practically had she been living a godly life?

The sincere answers to all these would be no, no no. Janet thought about her fruitless relationships with men. Could becoming an adherent
who looked up to God for all directives be the solution? Could she faithfully commit all her ways unto the hands of the Lord?

Why not try it? Her mind mulled. Why not live a practical,, devoted and faithful life? What would she lose? She had heard it before that there
was no friend like Jesus.. Would it not be good to put this to trial and see if indeed there was no friend like Jesus?

She decided she was would do so. Yes, Janet would be a complete changed person. That moment, she closed her eyes and said a short
prayer. She asked for forgiveness of sins. She also prayed that God should guide and direct her steps henceforth.

She decided she was would do so. Yes, Janet would be a complete changed person. That moment, she closed her eyes and said a short prayer. She asked for forgiveness of sins. She also prayed that God should guide and direct her steps henceforth.

On her part, she decided to do it with commitment. There was no point fooling herself over this. Neither was there a point in fooling any person. It would be a matter of personal relationship with God.

There was no doubt that people would see the changes; that would be good. But above all, living the new life in accordance with the words of God was what was paramount.

A week after the chat she had with Raphael over friendship, Janet decided to become a worker in her church parish. She did not have a problem with which section she should go as she knew she had flair for singing.

Before now, she would spend hours listening to music and singing lyrics. The remarkable change now was that she had decided to abandon worldly music. She would have to get rid of all those CDs, DVDs and other musical media she had that had worldly lyrics. No one told her to do so, but she had come to realize that if one indeed wanted the Holy Spirit to inhabit one's body, there was need to discard all those things that could serve as encumbrances.

Zizi saw her when she was gathering the materials for burning at the back yard of the mansion.

'Aunty Janet, did you want to give them out?' Zizi was hopeful about getting some as Janet was always generous.

'No. I want to burn them. Please get me some kerosene and a box of matches.'

Zizi was surprised. 'Are they all bad? Can I have some of them?'

'They're not bad, and I'm sorry I can't give you any of them. They're not good for you or anyone.'

Zizi was still nonplussed.

'They're evil music.' Janet hoped her explanation was implicit.

She burnt them all. She vowed that she would not go back to listening to or watching the videos of any such music again.

Her sister, Helen was quick to note the changes in her. As soon as Helen changed the channel to the musical one, Janet would excuse herself.

'What's happenings? Don't you like the channel?' Helen would express surprise.

'Not any more.' Janet would assert. 'My new understanding makes me realise that it's not the best.'

'Wait a minute, Janet, hope you're not becoming an extremist.'

'No,, I'm not. But I've said bye to those things.'

'Hmn,' Helen would scoff and shrug it off. Janet was undeterred. Her prayer was that one day - very soon - Helen would have passion for
Christ the way she did.

Even Funmi, her longtime friend, seemed not to be very comfortable with her new life and was tactfully keeping a distance. Janet felt they
were all acting due to their ignorance.

Her new life was an embodiment of great things as far as she was concerned. She was a new creature with great life ahead.

She went through her wardrobe and shook her head. There were so many clothes there; many of which she had never worn or had worn only
once. The numbers of the designer shoes and bags were also mind-boggling.
