Lol. Who gives a shyt about CIA?? When investors need data to guide their investment decisions, they won't consult the CIA. Rather, they will sift through up-to-date data like the one I provided up there (in the absence of a recent census) because it is more detailed and closest to the reality on the ground.

even if we assume an headcount actually happened in 1921. for goodness sakes do you kow the difference between 1921 and now? Thats a friggin century.
Within that same time frame, Nigeria has gone from nowhere on the world list of most populated countries to number 7 globally. Heck in 1921 England was more populated than Nigeria plus Ghana plus Liberia plus Sierra Leone, not to mention the whole of the UK. And here you are quoting population figures from that ara like it is supposed to hod any statistical value?

Look here, even if we are to dash igbos 4 to 5-million out of the SW numbers, they will still fall far short compared to Yorubas in the SW coz like I said in my earlier post, Oyo and Ogun alone are more than the entire SE numbers from that data. undecided Add another 5-million from the rest of the country and una go still fall short of the SW. undecided

That is why I said even if the SW 'dashes' igbos 5-million out of our total SW population (going by that data I presented), una go still fall far short. Oyo and Ogun combined telecoms data subscribers outnumber those of the entire SE states combined. That's just two states in the SW. There are igbos spread all over the country.
From the north, south, west, and the middle belt.

Significant igbo numbers everywhere.

Those numbers are conservative.

But given the fact that igbos are mostly Christian which should play a significant role in monogamy and birth rate compared to the other majority ethnics, we should be third largest.

1 No population headcount happened in 1921. What happened then is probably same as what just happened now, Difference being ignorant colonists vs Ignorant American government agency making..... Yes, Guesses.. Besides I am not saying the US agency is biased or superficial, I am just simply saying the figures are most likely wrong. Which is very very possible. Heck, the best of their intelligence units can't even get a simple election result right under their noses right.

2- If it is actually a RESEARCH like you claim it is, where is the methodology and report, or better still How and when was it done like the OP rightly asked?

3 how can you possibly believe Igalas are more than URHOBOS, Nupes or even Edos? Common be serious.... #*Stern Face*

1) it very well did happen in 1921.

Nigeria Population: 1921 CENSUS.
1] Hausa/Fulani - 2,000,000 [Including Kano: 1,112,000]
2] Yoruba ---------- 2,113,000
3] Igbo ------------- 3,927,000
4] Edo ----------------- 472,000
5] Ibibio --------------- 960,000
6] Ijaw ----------------- 174,000

Extrapolate this information using any Mathematics formula, it is clear that all the Census from late 50s are just mere allocation of numbers.

Igbos are the Biggest Black nation (tribe) in the world.
Facts are facts. - @Chidi2Chidi

Courtesy: Oxford University, Cambridge Bookshop & British Museum.

https://www.nairaland.com/3911992/nigeria-population-1921-census-pics

As of 1921, the Igbo tribe was the single largest tribe in Northern and Southern Nigeria, even with the Hausa and Fulani combined. Yoruba came second and Hausa a distant third, despite the Igbo ethnic group losing about 1.4m people to the slave trade.

Today's census results, if properly conducted, should mirror the above. There's a reason, 'state of origin' is conspicuously missing from census forms but rather 'state of residence' is used instead, to take advantage of non-indigenous populations found in states where non indigenes abound plenty and create a false population increase in those states, knowing full well that nearly half of the Igbo population is located outside of the SE zone. The reason given by Former President Obasanjo was, '...by doing so it would be controversial'. I guess he knew why but wouldn't admit to it directly.

2) I wouldn't term the above 'ignorant'. I would consider any 'census result' conducted by the Nigerian government with a grain of salt.

I've always believed that the Igbo population is not the third largest as has been ascribed to them for decades since 1960.

Clearly shows Hausa's are the most populated by a mile, then why has the Fulani's conquered all of the Hausa's and half of the Yoruba's? Daura a once Hausa Emirate and Ilorin for the Yoruba's been a perfect example.
Do you know Hausa as a lang is being spoken in as far as Mali? Those people like to migrate down to Nigeria for better opportunity due to the arid nature of their lands and that explains a lot about Hausa's.

In other words, if the Hausa-Fulani population is broken down individually, the Hausas could probably be at about 13.9% and Fulanis at 13.5%, thus making the Igbo the single largest ethnic group in Nigeria.

Another question is if the Igbo figure includes Igbo speakers in SS (Anioma, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Edo) and middle belt (Kogi and Benue States) who number anywhere from 3m to 5m. If these speakers are excluded and we are to include them, the Igbo percentage might as well be at 16% to 18%.

The conclusion is very wrong. Both Hausa and Fulani Statistics are stated explicitly (@ the bold statement).

@ at the italicized, the assumption is also faulty. Ethnic group is the basis of the estimate, not States or region. So, referring to Igbo leaving in those other States has no relevance to what the Statistics provided is saying. I see emotion mixed with logic in your analysis. It shouldn't be on a public forum.

1) If you were patient enough to scroll further down, you would have seen where I ackowledged the difference.

2) There is nothing emotional about asking if the Igbo figure stated includes speakers in SS and the middle belt region, knowing that speakers in these areas are sometimes excluded from 'mainstream Igbos', although I see no difference. I see no point in this fact you just mentioned.

Another question we should be asking is this:

Is the 27.4% Hausa percentage referring to the core or 'ethnic Hausas' only or does it also include all minority tribes in the North who are not ethnic Hausa but speak Hausa as first language today? If so, if these minority tribes are excluded from this figure, what would be a most likely percentage for the Hausa? 15% maybe? 18% maybe?

The only thing we have that is closest to an informed estimate of population spread are the telecoms data (attached below) because it is unbiased in any form, and it clearly shows the SE as the least populated while the SW is the single largest/most populated. Oyo and Ogun population alone are more than those of the SE combined (without including Lagos or Ekiti, Ondo, Osun or Kwara and Yoruba-speaking Kogi).

Nice points but true ethnic population figures cannot be extrapolated from active number of subscribers for several reasons:

1) These figures are not ethnic figures but simply figures for phone subscribers and should never be relied on. No advanced country in the world depends on telecommunications figures for estimating true ethnic or tribal figures.

2) The first 7 states listed in descending order are big cities containing the native population plus other Nigerian tribes, foreigners, other Africans etc. living in them. Take Lagos for example, it is a very multi-ethnic state with the presence of virtually all Nigerian tribes plus foreigners. Assuming that the 12m figure for Lagos is entirely of Yoruba ethnic origin is quite hilarious. Assuming 40% of the subscribers are of Yoruba origin (which I think may be far-to-fetch), then about 4.8m might be the right Yoruba figure. The remaining 60% is shared between other Nigerian tribes, the Chinese, Indians, Lebanese, Europeans, Americans, other Africans living in Lagos etc. Ogun state, by virtue of it being a border state to Lagos, is home to thousands, if not millions, of people who commute or drive to work in Lagos or actively engage in business in Lagos but live in Ogun state due to housing or accommodation problems. Ogun state experiences a spill-over of otherwise Lagos residents and thus experiences the 'Lagos effect' described above. The state comes in second. Oyo comes in third.

3) A good percentage of phone users have multiple sim cards/line being used.

4) A good percentage of the sim cards/lines is for business purposes used by companies, offices, banks etc. Lagos, Nigeria's commercial center, probably has the highest concentration of companies and industries in Nigeria and every single one of them has at least one active sim card/line or more.

5) Summing up the figures from all the regions listed + the FCT gives about approximately 93 million active subscribers (48%) but the total Nigerian population is estimated at 195 million. A whopping 102 million Nigerians are conspicuously missing from the data (52%). Thus, the data provided above is baseless as a way of estimating true ethnic populations.

I also wonder if they grouped Efik,Annang ,Oron, Obolo, Eket under Ibibio, to arrive at the figure of 2.2% for Ibibio, which makes Ibibio the biggest ethnic group in SS, and not Ijaw.

Also there is the issue of multiplicity of active lines by single individuals. In Yorubaland, it's a must to have a Glo network line in addition to MTN and other lines, Yorubas like to patronize Glo alot. Where as in the East, it's MTN all the way, even though many have multiple lines here, it isn't as definite as the SW where having a Glo network is like a must.
Simply put, the number of active subscribers is a very poor data to use to extract ethnic population figures.

Great point. Also, not forgetting a fact that a good percentage of these lines are used for business or/and non-personal purposes and are not directly related to one tribe or another.
