pazienza: This is a good question that deserves to be answered. The CIA needs to expand more on their definition of 'Igbo', 'Hausa', 'Yoruba', 'Ibibio' etc and what figures they used to arrive at their percentages. 3 Likes |

In the mind of theses funny folks i am 4 persons while in reality i just an individual. Will i now be counted as 4 Yoruba persons when I am just 1 igbo man doing business in lagos. And this is applicable to most igbo business men and upwardly mobile guys in lagos, abuja etc . How on earth will take other people's population and add to their population 25 Likes 3 Shares |

bigfrancis21: The issue is that other assessors of the statistics can also wonder if the Yorubas living traditionally in Kwara, Kogi and even in some parts of Niger are included. The Hausas, Ijaws, Urhobos, Nupes etc will also have their own 'wondering' to make. These sorts of 'wonderings' will only derail the focus of the argument. The bone of contention from your point of view is the definition of 'ethnic group' in the context of the Igbo. Other ethnic groups can also contest that, eventually rendering the statistics, in its entirety, null and void. ...and if that is the case, your hypothesis (presumption) that Igbo may be the largest single ethnic group in the country will have no validity. 1 Like |

bigfrancis21: I would be surprised if they didn't add the Igboids (Ikwerre, Ukwuani, Ika, Etche, Ogba, Ndoni, Ekpeye) numbers to IGBO. I'm sure they added the Kwara and Kogi Yorubas number to YORUBA. 18 Likes 2 Shares |

kettykin: Even if you subtract 10-million from the Lagos numbers and dash them to the combination of Igbos, foreigners and other tribes in the state, the difference will still be as clear as 7-up. And the dual sim argument will apply to every state and region. Or are you trying to insinuate that Igbos in the SE don't use dual sims too?? 4 Likes 1 Share |

Academicwizman: Only that it is a proven fact that in all parts of Nigeria, immediately after the indigenous population, Ndiigbo are usually the next biggest demography group around. No other Nigerian group has this feature. Hence Igbo overall population more than any other Nigerian group, cannot be calculated without factoring in the number of millions of Igbos scattered all over Urban and rural parts of Nigeria outside Igboland. 14 Likes |

Academicwizman: The Yoruba ethnicity of Kogi ( Okun) and Kwara ( with Ilorin as the only exception), has never been subjected to controversies of Identity denial. Those Yorubas wear the Yoruba ethnic tag proudly. Same can not be said of Igbo groups outside SE, especially in SS, who are all too interested in becoming a minority independent groups of their own. 4 Likes |

bigfrancis21: Less than half of Nigeria's population you say?? I know you are smarter than this so quit the mischief. What is Nigeria's current population? Unless you can answer that then you have no basis to make that statement. Nigeria's current estimated population is 180 to 200-million or thereabout. The data I presented covers 143-million plus active lines. Is that not more than half of the country's estimated population? 2 Likes |

RockHard: You fail to understand my point. When I said "those assumptions will not fly", I was referring to these: RockHard: RockHard: In the first instance, the debate here was that the statistics in the original post are grossly misrepresented, but basing your own argument on telecoms active voice subscription is totally off point in this discuss. If you even consider that most people use multiple lines it will probably slash the actual head count by half which would mean that the data spread is just about 25% of the population which does not sufficiently address the topic, but I understand what you are particularly interested in anyways. Re: CIA Revision Of Nigeria's Ethnic And Religious Statistics. Shock Alert!! ... by RockHard: 8:49am On Nov 16, 2018 |
Donelli: Dude, no matter how you want to slice or dice it, the fact remains that the data in question is the closest to anything credible to guesstimate the country's current population spread. If you wanna argue about multiple lines, then that 'slash' you speak of would have to apply across board. And unless you wanna argue that SE folks prefer single sim phones or are too broke to recharge their phone lines in order to keep them active compared to Nigerians in other parts of the country then I don't see the point. The remarkable thing about the data is that it is devoid of bias, unlike general censuses that are always mired in controversy. 3 Likes 1 Share |

RockHard: I don't recall discrediting the credibility of the data, it satisfies it's own purpose. Mind you, if you actually read my post with an objective mind, which I doubt you did, you would have noticed that my own argument is that none of the statistics is sufficient to give a realistic idea of the population by ethnic groups. While my point as regards the original post is that it is impossible that the Hausas will have a population approximately equal to the two other major ethnic groups (Igbo and Yoruba) combined, you are probably interested in proving that the Yorubas have more population. It is not my interest to debate in that line so you must understand that before you argue further. 14 Likes 1 Share |

Re: CIA Revision Of Nigeria's Ethnic And Religious Statistics. Shock Alert!! ... by bigfrancis21: 9:17am On Nov 16, 2018 |
RockHard: @bold...if you say this, it is believable. Population spread relates very little with actual ethnic figures. More members of an ethnic group could be located in another part of any country at a given period and the 'spread figure' of that part of the country would be higher. Scarce resources located mostly in one part of a country tends to attract people from all parts of that country to the location of the scarce resources, thus the spread being higher around the scarce resources and much less dense around the spread source points. This is the whole point of the data you presented. Lagos, being the former country's capital, attracts more 'population spread' from other parts of the country to the region. Being a small state unable to contain everyone, there is a huge spillover of people into neighboring states such as Ogun and Oyo aka 'the Lagos effect'. Igbos are spread out all over Nigeria and the 'Igbo population spread' contributes immensely to increasing the population of their host states. How deserted Lagos can be during Christmas times when non-indigenes travel temporarily to their villages tells you the actual population of Lagos state. Egypt is a huge country but over half of its landmass is desert and unused land. Being a huge desert land, water was scarce. Development in Egypt started around the Nile river, being the major source of water in the country, attracting Egyptians all over the country to settle and develop around the Nile. Thus, the population spread living around the Nile is greater than at other parts of Egypt. Dude, it's not rocket science. Give it up already. No serious person or advanced country would rely on internet subscribers to extrapolate true census figures. It is not even hard for an average Joe to point out the fallacies in such argument. 9 Likes

RockHard: Even if the figure covers the entire Nigerian population, they would not be reliable because of the effect of 'population spread' being dense around areas of scarce resources than other areas, which you personally mentioned in your previous post. Name one advanced country that uses telecoms data to extrapolate true census figures. 9 Likes |

bigfrancis21: Lol. Calm down because you sound frustrated. You so badly want to beileve that your people are more populated than any other single ethnicity in Nigeria but unfortunately you can't prove it. So far you have failed to prove your position with any concrete data to support it. I presented you with data of active voice data that atleast shows a ballpark estimate of the population spread of Nigerian states, in the absence of a credible census data. Lagos state govt puts the state's population at an estimated 20-million strong. Igbos cant be more than 6-million in Lagos, they definitely aren't up to the Yoruba population in the state. But let's even give them 7-million just for arguments sake (that is certainly larger than the population of any single SE state). The combined population of Igbos put together in Ogun, Oyo and the remaining SW states can't be up to a million, and that's a statement of fact. Igbos are insignifant in numbers in the SW outside of Lagos. It's like you are attempting desperately to push the narrative that Igbos constitute a sizable bulk of the data from Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Ekiti, Kwara, and Yoruba-speaking Kogi, which cannot fly anyway because there's absolutely no basis for such postulation to begin with. You may have to seek other explanations as to why the SE population account for the lowest in the data in question, but the attempt to appropriate non-Lagos SW based figures without credible evidence to support such won't fly. You can try claiming a sizable portion SS, NC, NE and even NW (I don't care), but certainly not the SW (non-Lagos especially). 6 Likes 1 Share |
