By the way I saw nothing wrong with the formation, that was even my preferred formation before the game. I have criticized constructively, and the argument should be on the points I’ve made. Just because Rohr grinded out the result does not mean we managed some aspects right. We would have paid dearly for losing possession awkwardly several times were it other opoonents. If SA had scored a second goal the narrative here would be quite different.

Gernot Rohr won't dwell on offside goals after Nigeria qualification
By Nick Said, Special to ESPN

Coach Gernot Rohr would not dwell on two disallowed goals as he celebrated Nigeria's qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations finals with a 1-1 draw against South Africa at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.
Nigeria return to the continental showpiece for the first time since 2013 after securing the point they needed to ensure they could not finish outside of the top two in Group E.
They went ahead through an own-goal from South Africa defender Buhle Mkhwanazi, but conceded late in the first half as Lebo Mothiba drew the hosts level.
Nigeria also had two goals ruled out for offside when replays showed the officials had erred, but Rohr did not want to dwell on this misfortune.

"It was not easy, we knew it would be a difficult game because South Africa had to win to be sure to be qualified," Rohr said after the match.
"The most important thing was to play this match like a final. It would have been more beautiful to win and I have heard the goal scored by my captain [Ahmed Musa] was not offside, but I am satisfied with this result.
"Some of our players, especially the captain, is too quick for the linesman. But it was a good result, let's forget now these two goals that were not given.
"We had some problems in the first half, especially on the left side, but we played better in the second half and had some counter-attack opportunities. I am happy for this young team."

Rohr switched to a 3-5-2 formation for the game, which he says worked for the heat and the altitude of Johannesburg by making them more compact.
"Our system when we play three behind is because we want to be close together, to let them come and these conditions were very difficult," he said.
"Everybody did well, we scored a very important goal. Perhaps if [Odion] Ighalo was here we could have scored more goals, but we are satisfied with this result.
"We did it [3-5-2] already in the World Cup against Iceland, which was a good game. When you go away and you want to win the game or draw, it is good to change and give a surprise to the opponent.
'We had three very good central defenders, we believe it was the best organisation for today."

Five takeaways from Nigeria's Nations Cup draw in South Africa
By Colin Udoh, Special to ESPN

In the end, Nigeria and South Africa settled for a point apiece in their grudge 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Johannesburg.

Samuel Kalu orchestrated the Nigerian lead within the opening 15 minutes, but Percy Tau engineered a comeback, assisting Lebo Mothiba to draw Bafana Bafana level.
The point proved enough for the Super Eagles to seal their ticket to Cameroon, but Bafana still have it all to do against Libya next March.

Here are five observations from the game from Nigeria's point of view:

NDIDI WAS MISSED

How Gernot Rohr would have rued the absence of Wilfred Ndidi. The Leicester man was suspended after he picked up two bookings in the last qualifiers.
Without him, the Super Eagles midfield looked slow, ponderous and all over the shop. Tackles were lost, interceptions missed, and passing laboured.
Oghenekaro Etebo did well to run himself aground trying to make up for deficiencies elsewhere, but even he had his own struggles. And the usually imperious Alex Iwobi struggled under the elevation and heat.

MUSA/IHEANACHO PARTNERSHIP NEEDS REVIEW

It did not work at the World Cup, and it is not quite shaping up here. Okay, it looked good for half of one game against Iceland, but this Ahmed Musa and Kelechi Iheanacho partnership does not seem to be what the doctor ordered.
Rohr playing three at the back was an inspired decision, and took the South Africans by surprise. However, while the combo looked good with some fine interpassing at the beginning of the game, it just drifted out gradually.
The introduction of Isaac Success breathed some life back into it but by then Musa was suffering the effects of the altitude.
Perhaps Iheanacho's lack of form may have something to do with it, but it might be time to see a different partnership when next Rohr lines up like that. Musa/Isaac may prove more of a success.

NIGERIA PRESSING IS A CONTINUED PROBLEM

It has always been evident, but with the Nations Cup approaching, Rohr might need to spend more time working on his team's pressing.
It is a recurrent problem, but one which does not appear to be seeing any progress. Not even the introduction of the big John Ogu helped matters.
The players press haphazardly, no coordination, no teamwork. As a result, they get bypassed with a single ball, or a single move.
No time was it more evident than when Tau walked his way in behind a flat line to set up Mothiba for the goal.

KALU MAKING LIFE HARD FOR SIMON/ROHR

Moses Simon has been fuming for the last couple of games. The forward, who has only just returned from injury, has found his spot taken by the excellent and ever-improving Samuel Kalu.

But what irks the Levante forward to no end is how he has been excluded from the matchday squad three games in succession.
That may be an issue, but with Kalu's current form, it is hard to see Simon -- a Rohr favourite -- making his way back into the first team, at least not immediately. The Bordeaux man has been so good that it would be a serious injustice for Rohr to drop him.
Simon will have to bide his time and make the best of his chance when he gets it, as is very likely, against Uganda. But Kalu will continue to be the starter.

EZENWA SHOWS WHY GOALIES' DELIVERIES NEED WORK

Ikechukwu Ezenwa had practically nothing to do all game. But the one thing he could have done and failed miserably at, was in his deliveries.
Almost every ball the Enyimba keeper tried to send to his players went to the wrong place, either for a throw-in, or to the opposition.
And it is not just an Ezenwa issue. Even Francis Uzoho has the same challenge. Goalkeeper trainer Alloy Agu needs to start working on the goalies to improve their service to the front.
Vincent Enyeama's deliveries were usually the first point of attack for Nigeria. These days, that option is gone.
At the Nations Cup, with margins so thin, it will be necessary for the goalies to do more than save goals.

TheGoodJoe:

More like Rohr was scared to his boxers and decided no adventurous play or he lacks the capability of building a strong setup to tear up tough oppositions. Either way, our display yesterday was close to atrocious.

Just like how Siasia needed just a 2-1 win to qualify. We were already leading 2-1 but he kept on pushing forward to get a 3rd so as to secure a comprehensive win while toping the group and Bam! Guinea hit us on the counter and eqaulized and we crashed out.

Rohr is conservative yes but he has continued to achieve results. He is a very cautious coach.

If it is left to some of u here we will be parading different 11 players for each game. Imagine people proposing Success, Chukwueze and Onyekuru on starting line up for a game of this magnitude.

I was only disappointed in the officiating otherwise the boys got the job done.

I wonder if u people would have been saying these things u are saying if that Musa's goal had stood.

On point 1, was he also very decent after the first 30 minutes?
Also I am wondering if Odion too had played the way KC did, would he have been adjudged as very decent? But I hope Rohr can still stick with him same way he did with Ighalo and hopefully we see the best of KC in the GWG.

When it comes to KC there is always customary double standard.

Are you suprised.

Uganda's Miya, Onyango set to miss Nigeria clash
By Andrew Oryada, Special to ESPN

Uganda will be without Farouk Miya and captain Denis Onyango for Tuesday's international friendly against Nigeria at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

The two sides booked their tickets to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on Saturday, with the Cranes dispatching Cape Verde and the Super Eagles holding South Africa 1-1 in Johannesburg.

"Miya and Onyango have asked to be excused after they picked up some knocks in the game against Cape Verde on Saturday," Uganda assistant coach Mathias Lule told ESPN.
"This friendly comes at a very good time as we have already qualified and the players are eager to prove a lot more."

The 18-man Uganda Cranes team travelled on Sunday morning, with Tout Puissant Mazembe winger Joseph Ochaya, SV Ried's Edrisa Lubega and defender Murushid Juuko also absent from the travelling party.
The last time Uganda and Nigeria met - in a friendly in 2015 - Milutin Sredojevic's side secured a shock 1-0 result.

"I am excited that we are going to have the chance to play a high-profile team like Nigeria," Cranes coach Desabre added.
"It's through such big friendly games that, as a coach I get to learn many other things and it also help the players to develop better."

Desabre has previously overseen friendlies against Sao Tome e Principe, Malawi, Niger and the Central African Republic.

Squad to Nigeria

Goalkeepers: Jamal Salim Magooa (Al Hilal), Charles Lukwago (KCCA FC)

Defenders: Isaac Isinde (Kirinya Jinja SS), Timothy Awanyi (KCCA FC), Denis Iguma (Kazma FC), Nicholas Wadada (Azam FC), Godfrey Walusimbi (Kaizer Chiefs), Isaac Muleme (Haras El Hodood), Hassan Wasswa (El Geish)

This game might just be the perfect opportunity to unleash Onyekuru, Chukwueze and Osimhen at once. Kalu and Musa should start from the bench ... The Ugandans play some of the most boring football.. they defend too much... grin .. But their counter attack is quite good....IMO, the game is a good test for us....

Meanwhile Amuneke's Tanzania are still playing 0-0 against Lesotho. They need to win to greatly boost their chances as Uganda had done them a big favor by beating Cape Verde yesterday.

I wish Emma Luck. Hope to see him and his team in Cameroon. Then I will be having two teams I am supporting.

Nigerians can be unnecessarily timid, that it gets annoying.

Reason why people run over us again and again because they know to expect little or no reaction from us.

No one is saying Rohr should all of a sudden, go berserk, acting like an asylum escapee and how you've arrived at that as to what we're implying totally escapes me.

You think these little things mean nothing, talking to the fourth official sends a signal that you know exactly what's happening and you're not happy with it.

Those guys would try to avoid your trouble next time by being on their toes whenever they're officiating a match that involves your team.

The same thing happened against Argentina, and thesame people who insulted Rohr that day because of the poor decisions he made that day are the ones castigating those that are calling him out because we didn't concede a late goal like we did against Argentina.

We have qualified however, can the team we put out yesterday win the the AFCON 2019. I very much doubt it. There will be changes.

Compared to teams of the past this was a very weak team and in this regard Rohr should be commended.

These players are not coming from Bayern M, Man.city, Juventus and or Barca. I doubt if any of these players can get into any of those teams today.

So let's take things into context and for me they did well. It could easily have gone the other way.

Ex-Super Eagles Invitee Becomes First Teenager To Score Ten League Goals In England's Top Four Tiers; Onyedinma, Aneke On Target
Catch up on the Nigerian players that were on target for their English clubs in Football League matches on Saturday, November 17.

At the Stadium of Light, former Super Eagles invitee Josh Maja took his tally for the season to eleven goals in all competitions after finding the net for Sunderland in a 1-1 draw with Wycombe Wanderers.

On 67 minutes, a free-kick into the box was headed down into the path of Fred Onyedinma, who lashed home to give the visitors the lead.

Six minutes from time, Maja controlled a low cross inside the area before smacking home.

According to the statisticians at OPTA, Maja is the first teenager to score 10 league goals in the top four tiers of English league football this season.

At Stadium mk in Buckinghamshire, Milton Keynes Dons got three points on the board with one-time Nigeria Football Federation target Chuks Aneke scoring his seventh goal in nine games in a 2-0 win vs Macclesfield Town.

After a goalless first half, the Arsenal Academy product broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute, curling past goalkeeper O'Hara after receiving a pass on the edge of the box.

MK Dons are top of League Two with 37 points from 18 games courtesy of their win over Macclesfield Town.

If Rohr don't want to recall Onazi, he better replace him with someone else.

Is onazi a starter for the eagles that he should be replaced? Onazi belong to the bench.

The last time i checked our 3 midfielders are Mikel Ndidi and Iwobi or has mikel retired from international football ?

The head of the officiating team of yesterday’s AFCON 2019 Qualifiers between South Africa and Nigeria Bakary Papa Gassama has apologised to the Nigerian team after wrongly denying them two goals due to wrong offside calls.

Ahmed Musa put through Kelechi Iheanacho who tapped home believing he has given Nigeria the lead but Musa who supplied the pass was judged by the assistant referee as been in an offside position, something which turned out to be wrong after video replays.

In the second half with less than five minutes to go, Musa was once again at the receiving end of another poor referee decision as he was once again flagged offside incorrectly after slotting home what could have given Nigeria all three points.

The game ended 1-1 with Nigeria sealing her passage to next year Africa Cup of Nations but officials of the Nigeria Football Federation ( NFF) still expressed their unhappiness to Gassama over the poor decision which cost Nigeria a win.

Gassama admitted the error and even went a step further by sending his apologies to Musa over the incident although he admitted that such errors are sometimes unavoidable particularly due to the non-availability of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR)

I’m sure u have not been following my posts enough. I’ve not always been a critic of Rohr and Pinnick. Those two guys have enjoyed my backing for large spells on this thread. But I will always criticize constructively. The time will come, and even you will say it’s time to move on. But I’m afraid Pinnick may want to keep faith with him, just as he doing with Yusuf, and Rohr did with Yusuf. There is no conspiracy here o grin

Chukwuemeka007:

Like I said in the first paragraph of my submission, I'm not absolving Rohr of any wrongdoings. Yes, like in every team not just the SE there are still loose ends to tighten up and records to equal and hopefully surpass but let's throw in our opinions in a manner that won't seem to be rubbishing his current achievements and efforts.

About the QF stuff, yes it was your statement I was referring to and thanks for making your point clearer.

All I'm hammering on is let's not become armchair critics with high level of pessimism.
