I did a fsck check a while ago without the installation disks and it fixed the problem.
Am told it's temporary ,hope it will not return.

You need to check your HDD for errors if this continues. It might be failing.
Install GSmartcontrol and run a disk check. Hope this helps.

Once you upgrade, you won't be able to see your linux boot.
What happens is that after you install windows, the Master Boot Record is overwritten by windows, although your linux is still present in its partition.
What I would advise you to do is first make a linux bootable cd or usb, then upgrade your windows. Afterwards boot with your bootable disk and install grub on your mbr.

Check this link for instance:

Pls I deleted a partition from my laptop, how can I allocate the unallocated free space of the deleted partition to my C: drive? When I right click on the C: drive, "extend partition" option is in grey (not click able). Please help me. Thanks.

EaseUs Partition Manager should solve your problem. Get the free version from easeus' website.

Oh, Linux thread. I like these topics. I worked a lot with this OS. What a time. I remember how I struggled when I tried to run it. Thankfully, now you can find guides that describe how to run a virtual machine. But long ago I spent lots of time on it.

Recently decided to try things out in gtk land after a long absence. Utterly disappointed. Gnome 3 is a big pile of poo. It is heavy using almost 5g of ram with just file Firefox (with one tap open) and slow as sin. It is sad what default Ubuntu has become.. I had to remove it and install unity back before sanity prevailed on the machine. Gnome 2 was one of the best desktop GUI ever made. What they did to it in vain pursuit of mobile is sad and a cautionary tale.

Unity is still in the repository but it is nolonger shipped with any Ubuntu imagine. What I did was to install Ubuntu 18.04 via the text based installer then install Ubuntu unity desktop which worked fine. Gnome 3 is vomit atm.

These days I do KDE Neon on my personal laptop, and Lubuntu 18.10 on all the systems in my office. You should try it. The move to LXQt by Lubuntu was really good. We have no need to change the office systems.

So I have heard. The move to Lxqt went well. Lx* holds a special place in my heart because the project started getting attention when netbooks swept the computer scene and desire for a light weight desktop environment was strong. The transition to Qt after it merged with Razor Qt was eagerly anticipated by this one.

I used KDE Neon for close to 2 years. But the drive for a complete PIM suite pushed me to search for something different. KDE PIM Suite of Kmail, Korganiser and Kaddress book just don't cut it. Akonadi is just a "promiscuous woman". Thunderbird lacked the type of integration I wanted which left me with Unity. Not as light weight nor flexible as plasma desktop but it is light years from the vomit called gnome 3. The result is a well integrated desktop where emails can be turned to calendar entries, I can right click on a document and send it to anyone on my contact by email. Perfect integration with google account (Drive, Mail, Contact, Calendar). Redhat really put money into making evolution the best PIM suite in the open source desktop. I have my eyes on the Silk project aka Akonadi Next and their goal of creating a new email suite for kde. Their Kube email client is very promising but still a long way to go. Hopefully, once that is done.. I pack my bags and head back to KDE.

most like an install disk problem or the drive you intend to install to has bad sectors.

I think Gimp and Libre office replaced those software on Linux or you could try to use WINE to run the .exe

Hello here! Never knew this kinda section existed on nairaland.

I recently decided to join the ubuntu crew as I realized the windows OS was just for receiving fresh breeze.

I need someone's help please. Is it possible to have the virtual box to support mac on ubuntu running on an intel pentium and 8GB RAM laptop?
Responses would be greatly appreciated!
