Hello here! Never knew this kinda section existed on nairaland.

I recently decided to join the ubuntu crew as I realized the windows OS was just for receiving fresh breeze.

I need someone's help please. Is it possible to have the virtual box to support mac on ubuntu running on an intel pentium and 8GB RAM laptop?
Responses would be greatly appreciated!

If Mac is supported on virtualbox no reason why it would not run on an Ubuntu host. I would however advise you use a lighter flavour of ubuntu if you intend to run VM (Like VBox) Ubuntu uses Gnome 3 by default and that is a known eater of system ram. Xubuntu or even Kubuntu might be a better bet. This would ensure you have enough system resources (Mostly ram) for your VM,

It's lighter, if not as light as xubuntu. Think gnome 2 with gnome 3 libraries. That's what mate is.

Ive never used Manjaro so I can't tell you anyting about it, although I hear it's very popular now. You can try it out though

I think Gimp and Libre office replaced those software on Linux or you could try to use WINE to run the .exe

The main advantage of manjaro is the rolling release model (since it is based on archlinux) You do not get point releases like you do with Ubuntu and fedora, rather the system is always updated to the latest version of the software available through a continuous update model otherwise called rolling release. The downside is such a model is very prone to breakage. It is not uncommon for update to disable wireless or even break X. It is meant for people with about average or above average linux skill and not recommend for production or never fail kind of setup. If you want light weight, Xubuntu or LInux Mint xfce are a good mix between light weight, functionality and stability. If you are an ijebu man then you can try lubuntu based on the LxQt Desktop environment.

type: apt-cache search wine

find the name of the wine package then type: apt-get install <wine package name>

or just type wine in the terminal, you will be given prompts about what you can do to get wine if it's not already installed

The last time I tried a rolling release: Arch Linux, which I admit is quite a hile ago, I kept having issues: installing one package will break anoher etc. I don't think I've ever had so many issues with any other distro. What probably made it worse was that the default install wasn't necessarily up to date.
I would like to believe they've gotten better, I also hope that Manjaro doesn't have those issues, but i'm not as adventurous as I used to be. For the most part I just stick to ubuntu mate/xubuntu/linux mint mate/linux mint cinnamon

i have an old lg laptop with 1.5g ram, 1.6ghz and about 220gb hdd sleeping in my closet.i am considering installing puppy linux on it as it is small,efficient and kde can be installed on it. but i want to ask if there is an ubuntu or ubuntu flavour that will work on it without lagging, so that i can make my choice.

For OS, try Xubuntu or Lubuntu https://www.ubuntu.com/download/flavours

For Microsoft office, Libreoffice should suffice.
For Photoshop, i will recommend the following (check all of them out to see prons & cons); GIMP, Inkscape or Krita.

The above apps are all on the repos, search for them in the package manager. Hope this helps.

stick with Puppylinux.

no other distro will run ok on that thing. no point is suffering yourself.

do a full drive install of puppy. You can switch to Puppy LXDE for a bit of polish. besides Puppy now lets you install stuff from ubuntu repos directly so you aren't really missing anything

i dont see the advantage a full install will give me. and as for LXDE i can always download the pet though theoretically i can still run gnome and XFCE.The major issue is getting my glo bolt modem to work with it.

The network manager has dial up capability.

puppy doesnt run exe files nah, i dont if installing wine and running the glo bolt exe from wine.i connected a friends easyblaze same problem.I went to the forum,but nobody could help for now.if only i could build a driver for it to run the modem

Have you checked the Simple Network Manager app on Puppy? There's a section for dial up modems

All you need to do is setup the parameters.

The dial up number is *99#

Tomorrow I'll post screenshots of it to you. Unfortunately I no longer have or use dial up modems. But when we used to years ago this was no big deal.

Matter of fact if you search this thread you should see examples using Ubuntu network manager.

The Thinkpad 460s and Linux were made for each other. I am rocking PopOS (Yeah a gnome 3 based distro) on this machine and it is a beauty. Everything works OOTB (Ok I had to download the deb for the fingerprint reader) Including the SIM tray (comes builtin with LTE Modem) which allows me to connect to the internet from network manager. Although the system is very responsive even with a 4gb ram, I can not wait to upgrade it to 20GB and 1Terabyte NVME M.2 SSD drive.
