I called Enny’s number again, and just when I thought she would not pick it, she did.

‘Oh, thank goodness. Enny, my darling, why did you have to leave the house?’

‘Don’t darling me,’ she blurted out.

Before I could say anything further, she cut the line. That meant she was angrier than I thought. What would I do now? There was no doubt that her going to her parents’ house meant they were aware of what had happened. I was sure they would see me as very irresponsible. Enny’s mother would particularly detest my action. Oh, God!

I went to the bedroom to remove my office clothes. I didn’t like the situation of Enny going back to her parents’ house one bit. I never imagined that this kind of thing would happen in my marriage, a marriage that was less than a year old!

I decided that the following day, immediately after closing from work, I would drive straight to the parents’ house, off Demurin road, Ketu.

I would plead with her and her parents that my affair with Steph was the work of the devil, and that it would never happen again. Yes, that
was what I would do.

Surprisingly, few minutes later, Deola came into the house.

‘I thought you went to the campus and you would not be back until Friday,’ I said.

‘Yes, I forgot to take a very important book along. I’ll be going back tomorrow.’

I nodded. ‘It’s okay. Your sister is not in the house.’

Deola looked surprised. ‘Where did she go?’

‘She went back to your parents’ house.’

‘That’s serious. But uncle Alex, what did you do to her?’

I looked surprised. ‘You mean, she didn’t tell you?’

She shook her head. ’She only told me you offended her.’

I sighed.

‘You must have done something very terrible for her to be reacting this way.’ Deola looked at me expectantly.

I nodded. ‘Yes, indeed, I’ve offended her.’ I decided to tell Deola the truth. ‘I got a lady pregnant by mistake.’

‘What!’ Her mouth was open. ‘Uncle Alex, how could you do that?’

‘It was a terrible thing,’ I admitted. ‘And I’m so sorry for it. When you see her, tell her I’m awfully sorry. That I truly love her, and that the ugly situation will never repeat itself.’

‘I can’t believe you did that.’

‘Yes, indeed, it’s unfortunate.’

She brought her phone out and called her sister. They conversed briefly.

'I'll be going to join her,' she announced.

I nodded. I didn't expect anything else.

'Is there any food you would like me to prepare for you?'

'No, don't worry. I'll take care of myself.'

She soon left the house. I was once again home alone.

I sat down on the sofa to assess my situation. There was no doubt that I was in a big mess. But then, everything called for calmness and tact. I must be careful. I decided to call Steph. This thing she had done by informing Enny about the baby was very distasteful.

‘Hello, Steph,’ I greeted her as soon as she came on line.

‘Hi, Alex darling.’

‘I’m not happy with you,’ I blurted out.

‘What? Why, Alex?’

‘Why did you tell Enny about the baby? Why did you go against your promise that you would not tell her a thing?’

‘Is it not better that I told her? The earlier, the better, Alex.’

‘No. You shouldn’t have done that. You should have left that matter to me to handle. Why must you take it upon yourself to do it? Now, see
what you’ve caused. She has packed out of my house!’

‘Don’t feel bad about it, Alex baby. If she moves out of the house, good thing. Give her a divorce and come over here. Your baby and I are
waiting.’

‘You don’t know what you’re saying.’ I was very angry with her postulation. I cut off the line. She called me back but I refused to receive
the call.

I was not pleased with her at all. I lost appetite and slept in the sitting-room without eating supper. It wasn’t a pleasant experience at all.

The following morning, I tried to do my work without letting Enny’s matter bother me. After work, I drove to Enny’s father’s house. I was
lucky I met Enny and her parents already in the house. I was ushered into the sitting-room where I was asked what drinks I would like to
take.

‘No, thanks,’ I declined. It was better I faced my purpose of being there.

‘I have come to see you, mummy and daddy,’ I began. ‘First, I must apologize profusely for the incident that happened. It was a very
unfortunate and avoidable one. It happened weeks before my wedding with Enny. The lady in question thereafter traveled to America, from
where she called to inform me that the casual affair had brought about pregnancy. All my efforts to make her abort the unwanted and
unplanned baby fell on deaf ears. She said she would go ahead and have the baby,

‘I never planned for it, neither did I want it. It was the shame and the embarrassment that made it very difficult to tell Enny before now.
When my employer heard about it, she was very displeased too. As a matter of fact, she suspended me from work as a result. It was only
yesterday I resumed work.

‘My coming here was just to plead with my wife and to beg you that such a mistake would never happen again. I’m so sorry it happened.
Please, I beg for forgiveness.’

I stood up from my seat and prostrated.

‘Hmn,’ the man of the house sighed. ‘Please, sit down. So, are you telling us now that the other lady has become your new wife, or what?’

I sat down again. ‘New wife? Oh no, sir. Enny remains my only wife. The child has come, there’s nothing I can do about it, now. But I’ve
learnt from the mistake. Enny is my only wife.’

‘How can we be sure about that?’ Enny’s mother blurted out. ‘See, Alex, you’ve done a terrible thing. How can you do this to your new
wife? Since you’re in love with the other lady, why don’t you go ahead and marry her instead of subjecting Eniola to this embarrassment
and ridicule?’

‘I didn’t have the intention of marrying the other lady. Enny has been my choice all along. What happened was a mistake and the work of
the devil.’

‘That is it. The devil always takes the blame when something like this happens,’ Enny’s father said.

‘There’s no point for long talks,’ Enny’s mother said authoritatively. ‘Alex should forget about Eniola and go ahead with his Americana wife.’

It's not easy for Enny and her parent's to overlook the issue especially now that Alex has low sperm count.

Thanks for the update
Re: A Fatal Love {Sequel to 'The Sugar Mum'} by Vulcanheph(m): 9:59am On Dec 17, 2018
Something isn't right.
Alex suddenly has low sperm count yet has managed to get Steph pregnant.
Enny and her parents are taking the matter way too seriously even though Alex has explained to them that his fling happened before their marriage.
Enny's parents are too eager to dissolve the marriage unlike normal parents who would try everything possible to make their child's new marriave work.
Steph seems to be too obsessed with Alex even going as far as being ready to have his baby.
Something deeper is going on and poor Alex seems to be in the middle of it.

‘There’s no point for long talks,’ Enny’s mother said authoritatively. ‘Alex should forget about Eniola and go ahead with his Americana wife.’

‘Oh, no, don’t talk like that, ma,’ I quickly put in. ‘Enny is my love. Enny is my wife. It was just a mistake and it won’t happen again.’

I faced my wife who had remained silent all the while. ‘Enny, you know I love you. This one is the work of the devil. We must not allow this to circumvent our relationship.’

‘How are we sure another lady is not carrying your pregnancy, or that the lady in America will not have more children for you?’ Enny’s mother said, going for the jugular. ‘You should be ashamed of yourself, Alex. You could not impregnate your wife, but you could impregnate another lady outside your matrimonial home.’

I felt stabbed by those words, but kept quiet.

Enny’s father quickly intervened. ‘Alright, Alex. We’ve heard you. Enny will need some time to get over this and to be trusting again. Give her some time. Let her remain here. When she gets over the trauma, she’ll come back to you. That is, if indeed you really want her back, and you’re going to be a faithful husband that you should be.’

‘I’ll live up to my words, I promise,’ I said. I turned to Enny. ‘My dear, when are you coming back to the house?’

‘You can’t rush her,’ her mother quickly interjected. ‘It’s like you don’t really know the gravity of what you have done. This is the kind of thing that derails marriages and makes divorce rate to go up. Please don’t rush my daughter o.’

I thanked my father-in-law and mother-law for their time and consideration, winked at my wife - who hardly looked at me - and left the place.

As I drove home, I was a little bit satisfied about my mission, although I was miffed by the role played by Enny’s mother. She had a great influence over her daughter, and I had no doubt that she was instrumental to Enny leaving my house in the first place. All the same, I believe in a matter of days, Enny would come back to my house - our home.

When I got home, I decided to cook noddles and boil eggs. Thank God I had a carton of noddles in the house. That would suffice as my meal for now. I realized that I was living like a bachelor again and I didn't find it funny
