According to my brief read on it, NYSC was formed after the civil war, as a way for Nigerian youths to understand each others cultures, learn from one another and create unity among the population etc, which is why Coppers are never posted in their home state, instead are sent elsewhere.

EVarn:
Heard the NYSC programme was initially conceived as a two years mandatory military service for males and one year mandatory military service for females, to be taken after O levels(secondary school education), but was later downgraded to the current version by the then Supreme Military Council due to funding and age of participants. Even though I can't vouch for the authenticity of that claim, it shows that the idea of militarilizing the NYSC probably has been around for decades now.

However I agree with you, no point endangering innocent youths against their wishes. It should be a voluntary thing. We are already running multiple agencies with more or less the same function, no need to add more.

BTW, the President doesn't have the power to create any agency without approval from the NASS. However, taskforces can be created unilaterally to serve temporary assignments, without needing Senate approval. The idea of National Guard will definitely need NASS approval, and I don't see any assembly giving consent, especially with the Peace Corps issue still lingering.

It is..........but should not be.

Presidential candidate Gbenga Olawepo Hashim is calling for a National Guard.
https://www.nairaland.com/4934020/establish-national-guard-solve-insecurity

Why not convert NYSC to that National Guard and make military training and service mandatory for all graduates?

They can join the police in holding "soft liberated areas" while previously battle-tested MOPOL men join the Army at the real front

This Hashim guy either clearly doesn't know what he is talking about or desperately wants to sound intelligent. Why duplicate agencies when we already have NSCDC, Police, and DSS to bridge the gap of internal security?.

If he had said his idea of National Guard entails temporarily creating an elite force comprising men from the military, police, DSS and local vigilante groups; training them properly, equipping them dangerously and giving them a semi-autonomous command(answerable only to the ONSA and Presidency), with the goal to flush out terrorists in the NE, then it would have made more sense.

If they start piloting choppers, then we would know that we aren't fighting an insurgency anymore, instead, we are fighting an invasion. embarassed cry embarassed

They possibly can't fly choppers, but with the way things are going, they may soon be able to fly bomb-ladden drones into our military bases.

Just adopt an Air Force personnel or kidnap his mother or kids.
Then carry him to an attack on Air Force base with the help of moles and Intel's, capture the base, and force the pilot to fly the planes and unleash mayhem on designated targets.

I highly recommend this movie : The siege of Jadotvile . It's a true event that occurred in Jadotville where a battalion of Irish soldiers of about 150men defended their ground against 3000 Congolese soldiers led by a French meccenary.
It shows that it is extremely difficult to overun a base where the soldiers exhibit high level of discipline and Tactics. In the entire siege, no Irish soldier lost his life.

Yes, it is a movie. The script is known. Our soldiers are not fortunate to have a written script to follow.

The way we treat ourselves in this country is absolutely pathetic and dehumanising, the Nigerian system is not working, it's a class thing. If it were to be the CP's and AIG's they will be accommodated real good. I'm sure money must have been budgeted for this operation but they rather steal it. We have had dumb and dumber IG's but this one is the dumbest.

We're actually far off. It's the training that own troops have received, that's why we can't build proper defensive fortification.

Poor training at all levels of the Nigerian army, equals the disaster we currently are witnessing in the Northeast.

The British in the example i had earlier provided in Musa-Qala had a very poor base. It was a mud compound with short walls.

In fact let me go look for that documentary and post it here. It's a must watch for everyone.

You'll see that even Nigerian soldiers were better equipped than those British soldiers in that base.

I am forced to comment quietly.

It's not just training infact it more about INFRASTRUCTURE and that is ay evert level.

It reminds me of going to one our universities and some lecturer's were using notes and references that were decades old.

That's a genera mentality across government structures in Nigeria, do you think therefore that our armed forces are exempt.

Army Declares Nigerian Doctor, Perry Brimah, Wanted For Allegedly Raising Funds To Feed Troops

The Nigerian Army has declared wanted Dr. Perry Brimah, a Nigerian in Diaspora for allegedly launching a global fundraising scheme aimed at generating money to provide food for troops in the North East.

In a statement released this morning, the Army says the fundraising is fraudulent as the Nigerian soldiers sent to prosecute the war against Boko Haram in the North East, do not lack food nor logistics. The Army says it is working with INTERPOL to also declare him wanted.

The Army called on Nigerians to come forward with information on how to track Brimah. Read the statement below

The attention of the Nigerian Army has been drawn to a fraudulent and criminal fund raising by one Doctor Perry Brimah, a Nigerian in diaspora, tagged “Global Campaign To Provide Food For Nigerian Soldiers Fighting Boko Haram”. The criminal embarked on this fund raising venture ostensibly to defraud unsuspecting members of the public especially the international community to fund subversive activities and personal life style. The criminal is using the following contact points for the fund raising;

https://www.gofundme.com/feed-nigerian-soldiers/
info @ ENDS.ng
Tel: +1-929-427-5305; Whatsapp: +234-903-420-3031.

We wish to state that the Nigerian soldiers deployed in the North East or elsewhere, neither lack logistics nor food as the fraudster wants unsuspecting members of the public to believe. The Nigerian Army never faltered in providing necessary logistics to troops to the extent of providing extras especially during festive periods. Therefore, this move by Doctor Brimah is nothing but a scam as there is nowhere in the world where troops were fed through donations by members of the public.

We would like to further state that there has never been complaints of lack of food by soldiers talk-less of starvation. The so called Dr Perry Brimah or his agents do not represent the Nigerian Army or her soldiers. Whoever believes and falls victim to this criminal act does so at his or her own risk. In addition, the Nigerian Army in conjunction with the Interpol are working hard to declare him wanted and extradite the International fraudster to face justice. Therefore, we request the general public for any information on the whereabouts of this fraudster.

You are please requested to disseminate this information to the public through your medium.

Why not just join the organization and try to do your best to save it?. You seem to have a veritable dislike for the military, and I cannot fault you because you may have your reasons for doing so. I know things aren't always white and black.

But just consider the effect it has on good people of the force who may be reading, it's somehow demoralizing, even for civilians sef.

I will rather die than joining the Nigerian army.
I don see the Nigerian army abandoning one of their personnel that has bullets stuck in his body, though he was treated but the place was not fully healed cause the bullet was still stuck there...make I cut long story sha, I was part of the guys that took him to a village close to ijebu Igbo where this bullets was removed. It happened in early 2015, he was shot in 2014 while fighting boko haram... I saw the terrible condition the guy was in with my korokoro eyes.
Soldiers that the Nigerian army declare as MIA, I swear bro those MIA soldiers family didn't spend up to 3 months before they were kicked out of the barracks with just their properties, no compensation no nothing. This was between 2014 and 2015 o, I met a guy last year, his dad was also said to be MIA by the Nigerian army, since 2014 till now, one kobo never reach the family hand. The guy don travel go SA sha, he is from obudu in cross river.

WO!! Story plenty... Joining the Nigerian army especially as a recruit is just a waste of time/life
