He has been denied thrice now.
Once for b1/b2 and twice for f1.
He said his cousin is a citizen.
Could this be the reason?

Depends on how the cousin became a citizen and if he listed him on his ds 160.

hi guys

i have been a nairaland follower since 2013. grin

i am sorry my testimony is coming late. i hope it helps raise the hope of nigerian youths seeking greener pastures here.

i have been denied USA student visa in 2013, 2014 and 2015
i then turned my dreams to canada (paid my school fees in full and was still denied student visa in 2016 after waiting over 3months)
at this point my money was almost finished and my family started advising me to start studies here in nigeria

i enrolled for yaba tech part time program while i also chased my travel dreams in Germany. i was also denied visa to germany because i couldn't raise the 8,800 euro blocked account.

at this point, i was frustrated and desperate, but the work load from yabatech and my business kept me from depression.

immediately, after my graduation in Yaba i decided to give USA one last trial knowing fully well that i will be denied but i kept on pushing forward

my interview went thus:
first, my interview was for 6;30 13th august 2018 but for the first time i got to the embassy very late and i was not scared or nervous. it rained heavily that day and the rain no pity me at all.
i just protected my documents and went it. i was very cold and feeling sick. i just wanted to do my interview and leave. i was bending down to make my self warm and was almost sleeping before the person behind me told me that it was my turn.

My interview was very long.........

my interview: (a Beautiful black american woman):
VO: Hi there. are you okay?
Me; Hi. yes i am fine. i am just cold. with fake smile on my face.
VO: oh okay why are you going to the USA?
Me; for my undergrad studies in Business Administration and management
VO: when did you finish high school?
Me; 2012
VO; what have you been doing since:
Me; I went for a computer diploma program for a year. then i started applying to Universities in US, Canada, Germany and Nigeria. Things didnt go as planned with the Abroad studies so i went for my National diploma in yaba that took me 4years.
VO: Why did you choose to continue studies in US? why not nigeria?
me: the educational system in nigeria is really poor even though it is affordable to study in nigeria. my program for example is suppose to be a program of 2 years but due to the strike and poor educational amenities it will take me longer time to graduate here in Nigerian university. And i believe in the proverb; "what is what doing is what doing well"

I also thank all Nairaland members especially Amefrica, Gravinton, Stewee, Kunlebal, Walspring, even Justwise as i Welcome myself to AMERICA grin cheesy grin cheesy grin

Congrats.
Victory at last.

I don't think it's the reason. I think it still boils down to the consular's comments about telling him or her about a course different from what's stated on the i-20.

We must learn to abide by what's on the i-20 at all times. I applied for Statistical Analytics computing and Modelling but when i-20 came, it came as mathematics and Statistics so what I told them is MSc in Maths and Stat with a concentration in Statistical Analytics Computing and Modelling.

any other question coming, I explain Stat Analytics comp and modelling where I should talk bout Maths and Stat.

Me: well my high school colleague got admitted there and her name is ...... she told me about the numerous opportunity I would get from the sch and when she told me I begin my research on the school and I found out it was the best for me, smsu don't charge out of state tuition, that means I get to pay the same amount with a Minnesota resident..smsu is also accredited by the North Central association of colleges and it's part of the universities in America with the highest ranking and it's cheap which makes it easier for my mom to fund my education

Visa Approved. Dec 21st

VO: What are you going to the US for?
Me: my Master's degree in Plant Pathology at the University of Georgia in Athens.

(I think he noticed my GRA)

VO: What's your research going to be on?
Me: Molecular diagnosis of plant pathogens and development of effective disease management strategies

VO: What is molecular diagnosis?
Me: DNA-based method. Advancement of morphological technique. E.g. PCR... this involves DNA isolation and PCR analysis and subsequently search on the NCBI (I said the meaning of NCBI here) database to determine the genus and specie. (I said this all a little haphazardly).

VO: Are you married
Me: No

VO: Do you have kids
Me: No

I will be approving your Visa now. Pick up in circled location in 3 business days.

It was all God's Grace.

Thanks to all that contribute to this trend selflessly and responded to my questions including (but not limited to) Lagosismyhome, Ubah1, gboyegaD, 100kobo, fairheart... God's gonna bless you all immensely.
Special thanks to Jummybecks/Bassmana and Toakins... Words can't express the help they rendered to me.... God bless you both real good.

Visa delayed at the Lagos consulate this morning

VO....Good morning
Me ....Good morning
VO .....So why did you chose this university.
Me.....I have been in constant communication with Prof Joseph Elarde even before I decided to apply. He is spareheading a reaserech on network security systems precisely offfensive-defensive based network security systems and I would be on his research team for the next two years. Besides this, the concentration at this university is information assurance and security unlike the other university that gave me admission that has cyber security has its concentration. Cyber security is a subset of information assurance and security. So going with this university is like killing two birds with one stone.
VO ....The course you told me you are going for is different from what I see on the i20.
Me.... Yes. The Tennessee higher education commission accreditation of computer science is registered on their database as warehousing and data database administration. I have a doc from the school that clarifies that. I gave it to him.

VO... so who is paying your tuition?
Me..... I got a GTA that covers my full cost of tuition and some Monthly stipends. The rest of the expenses will be sorted by my uncle and my personal savings. Passes the statement.

VO... tell me how you got this huge scholarship.
Me ..... The award committee must have been impressed by my SOP and my recommendation letters was written by professors who had adequate knowledge of my abilities during undergraduate studies.
Types forever ....
VO ......sorry I won’t be approving your visa at this time .....bla bla bla

Thanks for everyone for their inputs. I have to give it a break. Not giving up tho.

Seems to me your transcript is incomplete and you omitted some things. If you come here to get helpful feedback, say the whole truth. Willing folks here get turned off by transcript like these and don't comment at all.

So why did you chose this university

1. No way the VO would ask "why did you choose this university" without asking "What you wanna go do in the US or which school, etc". Again, methinks this transcript is incomplete.

2. The context of the question "Why did you choose this university" matters a lot. For example, if the question follows "Which school?", then the VO wants you to tell him why you chose this school out of all the schools in the world and why you chose to enrol in a US school. But if the question follows "Which other schools did you apply to?", the VO wants you to tell him why you chose this particular school from the others you applied to/got admitted to.

I have been in constant communication with Prof Joseph Elarde even before I decided to apply.

3. Nice response. I think you need to prepare like 2 or 3 reasons for questions like this, just should in case you forget any. Also, you can have something to say if the VO isn't satisfied with the first or second reason. Be brief and concise. Mention each point and move to the next.

VO ....The course you told me you are going for is different from what I see on the i20.
Me.... Yes. The Tennessee higher education commission accreditation of computer science is registered on their database as warehousing and data database administration. I have a doc from the school that clarifies that. I gave it to him.
4. As the gurus have emphasized, when asked what course you're going for, make sure you mention what you have in your I-20 in your answers. You have your I-20 over a week with you before the interview, and the VO expects you to have seen what information is in it. It's awkward when you're saying something else, the VO doesn't need to understand your field. Any supporting document could be forged, and the VO has no time to verify that, that's why you show up for an interview.

VO... so who is paying your tuition?
Me..... I got a GTA that covers my full cost of tuition and some Monthly stipends. The rest of the expenses will be sorted by my uncle and my personal savings. Passes the statement.

5. The I-20 is a very powerful document, it is issued by the US gov in collab with your school, so you need to take advantage of it to defend anything. if you've got a GTA, the VO would see it on the I-20 or you point his/her attention to it. Don't expect the VO to believe you. Yes, go with supporting documents, but they aren't as trusted as the US issued I-20.

6. Next time, stop after the first sentence. That's all the VO needs to know. If your GTA covers your full tuition and stipend, what other expenses are you talking about? Having a parent or family member sponsor your travel could prove "family ties", so mentioning personal savings unnecessarily might portray otherwise.

VO... tell me how you got this huge scholarship.
Me ..... The award committee must have been impressed by my SOP and my recommendation letters was written by professors who had adequate knowledge of my abilities during undergraduate studies.

7. This was a big chance to grab that visa but. Next time, ensure you mention GRE, standardized tests also, in a single coherent sentence. Don't bore them with how strong your letter was, unless you have more time or required to clarify.

You didn't mention if you were asked any standardized test, this looks strange to me. Which is why I have doubts about the completeness of this transcript.

To be honest, you did well, but try to work on these points. The earlier you get it right the better. The VO might have access to your I-20 issuance history, and definitely your visa application history too. There's a lot those guys look at, so, don't waste time at all, work hard on this same school and refire again.

Disclaimer: My opinion, and not facts.

She refused you based on the bolded as (s)he was likely not sufficiently convinced. This is no fault of yours. The VO just found a convenient reason to delay you. If you chose to refire immediately, that's okay. But if you've elected to give it some time. that's fine. I am sure a more experienced VO would adjudicate your application differently.

No I think that’s the ish. Started with a B1 attempt last may. For now, I go chill. I wish all applicants success in their pursuits.
Oh! I see, I see, I see.

Seems to me your transcript is incomplete and you omitted some things. If you come here to get helpful feedback, say the whole truth. Willing folks here get turned off by transcript like these and don't comment at all.

Well, it’s complete and VO arent robots to start interviews the same way for all students. After collecting my docs, he stared at it specifically the top left hand corner where the school name is written before asking the first question. Thank you I didn’t omit anything. What gain is that to me biko ?

1. No way the VO would ask "why did you choose this university" without asking "What you wanna go do in the US or which school, etc". Again, methinks this transcript is incomplete.

Again, he didn’t ask. I can’t lie.

Noted.

3. Nice response. I think you need to prepare like 2 or 3 reasons for questions like this, just should in case you forget any. Also, you can have something to say if the VO isn't satisfied with the first or second reason. Be brief and concise. Mention each point and move to the next.

I was bro. I had mock with some gurus off camera here. Don’t wanna mentions names. See I did all I could with that interview. Prepared for months. My denial has nothing to do with the interview itself. Perhaps something he wasn’t satisfied with in my DS or my jumping from B1 to F1 in less than a year. We had a good conversation bro.

Well, if the need for calcification would not arise during the interview the school wouldn’t have included the doc. He logged on to the commission website bro and even before that I explained to him. Thanks.

I got a GTA and I mentioned it. He then asked for the letter that supports the claim which I gladly presented.

6. Next time, stop after the first sentence. That's all the VO needs to know. If your GTA covers your full tuition and stipend, what other expenses are you talking about? Having a parent or family member sponsor your travel could prove "family ties", so mentioning personal savings unnecessarily might portray otherwise.

I said a lil of my monthly stipends. My deficit was $13500 and I think having a relative Acc statement and personal savings isn’t a crime bro. I gave hhim my uncles statement when he asked for it.

I know I should have mentioned GRE really. It’s well. But my transcript is complete brother. Why will I conceal information when I need help ? He typed forever and then bla bla bla.

Thanks buddy
